7/10 - Joba vs Saunders

The Yankees go into Anaheim having won 13 of their last 15 and tied for first in the AL East. Let's hope that by some miracle it doesn't fall to 3GB by the break. The Yankees have essentially no bullpen apart from call-up Mark Melancon today so we have to hope for a nice, easy, long outing from Joba.
Hope springs eternal I guess.

This has all the makings of an 8-4 loss with Joba pitching 5 innings and Tomko taking one for the team.
2 out of 3 would be thrilling, but realistically, 1 out of 3 seems the most likely scenario.

He should be well-rested: his last start against TOR only lasted 3.2 innings and a thrifty (for him) 86 pitches.
I posted in the Yankee depth thread on 2009 Joba and his 16 starts. Pitching into the:
8th inning = 1 time
7th inning = 2
6th inning = 5
5th inning = 4
4th/less = 4
80% of the time he's done by the 6th inning and half of the time he won't go further than the fifth. He's showing a Kazmir-like "efficiency" in that 100 pitches rarely takes him to or through the 6th inning.
So as a Yankee fan you hope he pitches a CG 80-pitch fist-pumping masterpiece, but more realistically Girardi needs to figure out how to get three or four innings from his BP tonight. Not having to face Torii Hunter and Vlad Guerrero helps, but Juan Rivera and Kendy Morales have been raking in breakout season fashion, and Chone Figgins is back to his leadoff excellence.
Another bullet the Yankees dodge is having to face Matt Palmer again. Put him on the list with all the other aces they've missed this season.

Yanks will take 2/3.

...
Yeah, I was trying to say that statement with an air of sarcasm, but that didn't work I guess.
Basically I'm hoping we pound the shit out of Saunders cause that's the only way I forsee winning this game.

Has this been confirmed? I saw that Hunter would likely go on the DL, but no followup on Vlad.
NY's bullpen tonight (pending the move, which I still think will be Aceves):
Fully rested: Melancon, Bruney, Tomko
Possibly available but Girardi would probably prefer to not use them: Coke has pitched two nights in a row, but only a handful of pitches each time. Robertson threw 28 pitches yesterday, Albadalejo threw 23.
Presumably not available: Hughes has pitched two nights in a row, I don't think they'll push him to 3, at this point of the season at least.
Rivera has also pitched two nights in a row, but low pitch counts and three days in a row off before that, he should be good to go.
So NY is probably looking at 2-3 innings at least from Melancon/Tomko/Bruney.

So we've lowered the standard of "ace" from great pitcher on the level of Santana or Halladay to "dude who pitched one good game against New York back in May." Matt Palmer is probably pretty flattered.

That was pure unadulterated sarcasm on my part btw. I was at that Palmer start at the Toilet and he was terrible. But so were the Yankees for keeping him in the game long enough for the smoke and mirrors to make him look like Cy Young.

Joe Girardi wants that AL Manager of the Year award.

EDIT: UH OH CB Bucknor behind the plate tonight. We're in for a shit-tasticly called game.

4-0 with a 2.74 ERA on the road this year.

Better ERA than Lester coming into tonight, he takes so much more flak than he should.
Gameday had the last pitch to Figgins at 97 MPH.

I think he has an long-term injury in the shoulder area that makes it hard for him to raise his glove above his head, maybe from running into the wall so many times. He also seems to get terrible reads on balls constantly, they're going to have a tough decision on him in the offseason.
Jose!

Gameday had the last pitch to Figgins at 97 MPH.
But the knock isn't that he's giving up lots of runs but that he's not eating enough innings. He's like Brad Penny in that respect.

His home numbers are pathetic. 0-2 in 9 games with 5.36 era.
Not to mention his road wins (4 in 9 games) were vs. Orioles, Braves, Indians and White Sox. Not exactly cream of the crop.
he's lucky for his road numbers to mask his suck.
Who mentioned anything about lester?

Maybe if Penny was a 23 year old with an innings cap. I'm not defending him too much, but people make him sound like Sidney Ponson.

Jose!
He certainly has had his share of serious crashes, collisions but the motion doesn't seem caused by a shoulder problem, it seems like he isn't "seeing" the ball. Even on a line drive type ball when he doesn't have to raise the arm much it seems like he doesn't know where the ball is going.

Shame on you for touting ERA in an argument/comparison for pitchers.
The Gods of BABIP will make a sacrifice of Justin for your blasphemy.

Uh - what?? "mask his suck"?
Yankee stadium gives up some cheapies, in case you hadn't noticed. Joba and Pettitte have struggled there. Doesn't mean he sucks, per se - just that he sucks at home...
All that means is that Joba will pitch the away game in the playoffs...

No, I agree, I cringe every time the ball heads in his direction (seriously).
On the other hand, he's hitting up a storm, that's his 50th RBI.

Uhhhh... he's only given up one more home run at home than on the road.

2003 Sox offense vibe, with an actual closer.
#47
Posted 10 July 2009 - 09:47 PM
I understand offenses go through bad stretches from time to time, but why do you think runs are suddenly going to become harder to come by for that offense? I'm just curious why you think this.
#48
Posted 10 July 2009 - 09:48 PM
I think the issue is more that he does a lot more nibbling in Coors East, so his walks are much higher there, and he also ends up with some big innings.

It's already happened once and will happen again. It just does. It may not be a long term thing but it will happen. It's too long a season for it not to happen again.

Damon, Matsui, and Posoda are all 35-37 years old and each have OPS+ over 130...
Jeter is 35 and is having his best year since 2006
Brett Gardener slugging .412
No, no room for any regression here...
