How long does each team get to pick in the first round again?

Looks like it's four minutes

Yes, I'm sure Washington will wait till "late August" to sign Strasburg -- after the deadline.

For some reason I greatly preferred just listening to the conference call as opposed to the live rounds the past few years.

MLBN is pushing the "he might pitch in the majors this year" talking point. Hard.

Bud absolutely sucks at this. Why does he drag everything out?

That phrase would be a lot more dramatic if teams were allowed to trade draft picks.

You are right about not knowing more than blurbs about these guys... but the guys who get paid to write these blurbs couldn't believe it when this option popped up, what, a week ago? So going by those, his statistical breakdown against other college hitters, and even factoring in his position... it just seems like a reach. I wouldn't be happy, and Pirates fans are pissed. Again, I hope he works out and is awesome.

I'm sure if they pick up a big time signability guy everything with be all sunshine and rainbows..... but piecing together everything about Sanchez, all I can think about is that he's a "rich man's Tim Federowicz."

Fair enough.

I think the fact that there's uniform surprise re. the decision says something, I must admit.

Wooo! Dead air!

EDIT: Tate is a good pick because he's athletic and the Padres right now are "boring to watch"? Great analysis, MLBN

Selig should NOT be doing the announcing. I know that's how the other sports do it, but he sounds like Mr. Wilson up there.

He didn't get to finish his snack by 6. He was finishing a peanut during that last pick. Leave him alone.

I have to say that Harold Reynolds is terrible at this.

On the Tate pick, all he has to say is how the Padres need to get more athletic at the major league level. He's coming off like he read one mock draft and then decided to come up with 3 ways to say the exact same thing. It's annoying.

I do love John Hart though, especially when he just kind of smiled and laughed off how badly he fucked up some drafts.

Sanchez. Interesting.

Just reminds me of the Pirates' draft two years ago, taking Daniel Moskos at 4 one spot ahead of Matt Wieters. Moskos hasn't done much of anything in his pro career so far.

Not really. Keith Law broke the news a few hours ago that Sanchez had a deal worked out with the Pirates.

This is how the MLBN works. Some of the player-announcers they have are getting better about saying useful things, but it's either a big party where everyone tries to do their craziest SportsCenter voices, or they talk about fundamentals, athleticism, mentality, etc.

From the BP Chat:

Kevin Goldstein (3:36:44 PM PT): huffmake (toledo ohio): with tony sanchez being a top 5 pick. how does he compare to the 2 previous top college catchers drafted in buster posey and matt wieters

KG: Sanchez is a tasty burger, Posey and Wieters are the best steaks and that expensive place downtown.

I don't think so. I watch the network a lot and for all the silliness that comes out of Mitch Williams or guys like that, it's at least based on their own experiences (or biases).

HR, who I normally like, is just sputtering out sentence fragments. "Need to get athletic...Padres are boring, due to lack of athleticism. Tate athletic. Must...not...hug...cue card girl...Padres needed Tate for athleticism."

On the other side, Marcos just tappped around calling Hobgood a "tub of buttery shit". That was fun for all.

I love the pitcher's mound in the middle of the room. I know the theme of the set is a baseball diamond, but how many people are twisting their ankles tripping on that thing tonight?

Wheeler to the Giants, who I would have figured the Braves would have went after had he been available. Alex White from UNC now?

Last time the Braves drafted this high: 1991, Mike Kelly #2 overall.

Zack Wheeler is:
1. toosley
2. mild mannered
3. a high schooler
4. from Georgia

and went to the Giants at 6th. The Braves are probably pretty pissed off.

HR said Wheeler really wants to sign, rather than go to Kennesaw St.

Yes, that is kind of what I was getting at.

Somehow I'd missed that Wheeler was committed to Kennesaw State. Between him, Heckathorn, and Jenkins there may be 3 Owls (or prospective Owls) taken before anyone from UGA or Tech. That program's come a long way quickly.
