On April 13th, longtime SoSH member "JohnMal" passed away unexpectedly at the tender age of 35 from an apparent heart attack. He leaves behind a loving wife and three terrific sons, aged 3, 4, and 6. Some of you may have met John Malin at SoSH bashes in years past... he was a fun and energetic guy who had a real passion for this community and the Red Sox. Bridget, his wife, told me today that he talked about SoSH all the time and spent countless hours reading the threads and interacting with us all.

This is obviously a very difficult time for the Malins and our deepest sympathies go out to them. I also think that we could do a little more to make things easier for those three young Red Sox fans who've been robbed of their father so prematurely. If you can -- please send a donation to their educational trust fund (and remember -- they're young, so $10 now will be worth a lot more by the time they'll need it.). Checks can be made out directly to the fund and mailed to the following address:

The Malin Children's Education Trust
c/o Bridget Malin
16 Mount Bethel Rd.
PO Box 326
Warren, NJ 07059

If you've got any questions feel free to contact Bridget directly at BridgetMalin @ gmail.com

John's account has been changed to a lifetime account and Bridget and her sons will always be able to enjoy SoSH, so don't be alarmed if you see the username on occasion.

Bridget -- feel free to contact me if there's anything else we can do.

Wow, thats horrible. Just a tragedy that 35 year old has to die, especially with a wife and kids. I remember getting some good cigar recommendations from him in one of the cigar threads and talking politics in V&N. Sad stuff.

Our deepest condolences go out to John's friends and the entire Malin family.

John was a good guy. A loss for his family and our community.

I had a heart attack myself at age 49. My deepest sympathies are with his family.
BTW, if I try and use the term "wicked" will I sound as stupid to you as you all sound to me when you say it?

I haven't been a member of SoSH that long and I don't ever remember reading a post of his but so what. I lost my dad when I was 16 (I'm only 20) and I know how hard it is so I will absolutely send the trust fund a check.

35???? Jesus, that's horrible. My condolences to his family and everyone who knew him.
Do I think all of SOSH is evil? No. Not everyone in it is a boozehound and druggie as I once thought they were.

I never had the pleasure of meeting John or interacting with him online, but this is certainly awful and sobering news. My heart goes out to his family.

Here's his obituary from the Newark Star-Ledger:

Quote

Mr. John David Malin, 35, of Warren died Monday, April 13, 2009, at his home. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 18, 2009, at 11 a.m. at the Higgins Home for Funerals, 752 Mountain Blvd., Watchung, with Rev. Brooks Smith officiating. To send condolences, please visit www.higginsfuneralhome.com.

Born in Plainfield, Mr. Malin was raised in North Plainfield and has resided in Warren for the past 10 years. He was employed since March of 2006 as a regional manager for Atlantic Tactical in Somerset. Mr. Malin received a bachelor's degree from Rutgers University in January 2000. He was a member of the Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church in North Plainfield and Pluckemin Presbyterian.

Surviving are his wife, Bridget Unice Malin; three sons, Jakob David, Luke Robert and Dylan Cash Malin; his parents, Stuart and Patricia Pompano Malin; a sister, Donna Perna; his paternal grandfather, Murray Malin, and his father and mother-in-law, Dave and Gail Unice. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Malin Children's Education Trust, c/o Bridget Malin, 16 Mount Bethel Road, Box 326, Warren, N.J. 07059.

My God, 35 is way too young. And to leave behind a wife and three kids as well as both parents. Whether you choose to pray, meditate or think, please remember him and his family.
Bought, not earned. There were about $900 million in free agent contracts signed this past offseason. The Yankees alone were responsible for $450 million, or one half of that amount. The next time some Yankee fan breathlessly goes on and on about their team make sure you remind them of this fact.

Dear God this is tragic. I never met John, but my heart aches for him and his family. They will get a check from me and I'm sure from many of you.

It's so scary to hear about people dying of heart attacks who aren't a whole lot older than I am. Just awful.

Anybody dying at that age is wrong, but with a young family as well? From a heart attack?

Jesus Christ. Just awful. Truly, truly awful.

Deepest condolences to his family and friends.

This hits close to home for me. My father was just a little older than John when he died of a heart attack.

I was 2, my sister was 4.

The good news is that life does go on for the family. The bad news is that there will always be a void, and some lingering sadness.

My heart goes out to the family, and I will certainly be happy to contibute to the cause.

Just terrible news. Let's all try to do what we can as far as trust fund donations. This guy was not only a husband and father but also a part of our family here at SoSH. It is time for us to step up for our fallen brother and do whatever we can to help his wife and kids. These boys have been robbed of the guy who would pass on his love for the Sox to them. Anyone here who may have access to people in the Sox FO needs to make this known to the organization as well and see if they can lend a hand.

Just a sad, sad situation. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

That's terrible news. I hope his family gets through this ok, as much as one can get through something like this. Thirty five is much too young, especially with a family.

I feel horrible for his family. This also hits me pretty close. I just went to the doctor on Wed. complaining of chest issues. I'm also 35. EKG and vitals were normal. But getting the blood work and stress test soon enough. Doctor said it may be stress/anxiety related. I've worked too hard and haven't rested much (family visits, vegas trip, more family).

I highly suggest getting a checkup for those who haven't in a while. You just never know.

thoughts and prayers.

A dear cousin of mine also died suddenly at age 36, he also left young children behind. The suddenness makes it hard to come to term with the death.

In a week full of bad news, this is the worst.
