Found some video to support what I suspected: It looks like Papelbon has actually gone through 3 set positions this season. This video
from 5/10 against the Rays shows him in the "new" delivery that we've been talking about all season. Notice how high his hands are, above the "Red Sox" on his jersey.
This screen grab is right before he begins his move to the plate:This video
is the one from brimac's blog, against the A's on 7/28. Notice that his hands are now below the "Red Sox" right before he begins his move to the plate:
Unfortunately the camera angles aren't quite the same, but I think the difference is pretty obvious.
Last but not least, here's the video
from Pap's 4 out save against Detroit earlier in the week. You can see in the corrosponding screen grab that he's again even lower, below the belt:
As brimac mentioned in his blog, the difference between this and the previous image is a good foot or so, but even more when compared to the first position he was using in the first half of the season.
Interesting progression to see, I think. I still want to find good '07 video and verify that he did in fact pitch the way he did in the first half of '09, because I just don't recall ever seeing anything like the first image I posted until this year.
EDIT: Just wanted to actually make a point in all this: Papelbon was tooling around with his delivery even prior to the meltdown on 7/28, given the differences you can see between his early season set position and the 7/28 one. Lots of tinkering going on, but it seems to be yielding positive results for sure.
