Wow, that's beautiful, and kind of amazing. How amazing would it be to play there? Bet I'd shoot 130.

Chad Campbell and Shingo Katayama at -5 lead.

Shingo's in the clubhouse, while Chad just made the turn and has the toughest 9 of the course ahead of him.

A shitload of low scores today, though I haven't seen too many risky plays.

I predicted that the winning score would be in double digits under par because of the favorable weather forecast. Highs in the 70s and only one day of potential rain.

Larry Mize at -5 joins the co-leaders.

Furyk just went to -5 with three straight birds on 14-15-16.

Ian Poulter is dressed like a colossal Spaulding Smails douchebag today in a pink polo and blue plaid slacks. All he needs is the popped collar to complete the stereotype.

Couples parlayed indecision at 11 into a shitty approach shot, so he settled for bogey. But he just set himself up for birdie on 12 with a sweet tee shot.

And make that a 4-bagger for Furyk -- he birdies 17 to take the lead by himself at -6.

Mahan needs a 10-footer from the fringe to salvage bogey at 11. A tough shot.

And Campbell birdies 12 to join Furyk at -6. A short, straight-in 6-footer.

You have to think some of these scores will come down a bit tomorrow. You always see a group of players come out of the gate strong and then realize they are at the top of the Masters leaderboard. Then, they sleep on it and come out and play nervous and make mistakes. The weather is conducive to low scoring but I think you won't see the 2nd round leader at -11 or -12. I'm thinking somewhere in the -8 range.

Man, did Zach Johnson get a lucky-ass break. His tee shot on 11 went way left and down the slope toward the pond, but hung up a few feet from water's edge.

As expected, Mahan double-bogeyed at 12 to drop to -3.

I bet playing there under non tournament conditions wouldn't make it insanely difficult. You figure 80% of their membership is over the age of 70, so I doubt they have it setup to constantly crush these guys egos.

Tee to green the course seems like it would be pretty playable. yeah there are some bad places to go, but for the most part it isn't exceptionally difficult tee to green. The problem is of course the greens. They are fierce to say the least.

Campbell to -7, and he still has 15 in front of him. He has a chance at 63 today

Tiger birdies 9 to get back to even.

EDIT - And Freddie Couples moves to even as well after three straight birdies at 13, 14 and 15.

EDIT - Campbell birdied 14 (that's three straight) and stands at -8 heading into the par 5 at 15.

I saw this thing where Arnold Palmer was saying most people would not break 100 at Augusta if you just took their ball and placed it on the green in regulation. Someone else described putting the greens there as like putting on top of a Volkswagen Beetle. But maybe that just is their tournament setup. How much can they change the greens beyond hardness for the tournament?

What would you rather win? British, US Open, or the Masters? Has to be Masters, right?

If the cut was today, it would be at even par. Right now 49 players out of 96 are at even or better. Even with the cooperative weather and virtually nonexistent wind, that's pretty amazing.

Tiger's about to tee off on 11.

Nice recovery by Tiger on 11, from the pine straw onto the green.

Man, he rimmed the cup at 12 on a 20-footer, and has to settle for par to remain at even.

Keep in mind he's never broken 70 on day 1 of The Masters. Let's see if he can make some hay on the par 5s.

Hunter Mahan's made a nice comeback from that double-bogey at 11. He's racked birdies at 13-14-15 to get to -6.

EDIT - And now he birdies 16 for 4 straight to get to -7. Getting interesting...

Too bad, Campbell comes in bogey-bogey after 16 great holes. One of the more disappointing 65s you'll see at Augusta. He's in great position anyway, of course.

And he just drained a 25-footer at 14 for back-to-back birds to get to -2.

Tiger + "within 5 strokes of the lead" = the rest of the field shitting bricks tomorrow.

Uh oh. Tiger just ran the ball about 60 feet past the hole on 18. It settled near the bottom of the trough. And that will be for par.

Nice recovery getting it back within a couple feet, but this is a colossal fuckup as he'll make bogey. And the streak of 70+ first rounds continues....

That fucking sucked. It was a straight forward chip that you land in the rough and let it funnel to the hole. He airmailed that chip and it cost him a shot. With how low the scores are, you would have been more comfortable with him at -4 or even -5 to charge to the lead tomorrow. I just hope Tiger comes out with his 10:45-ish tee time and puts up a 67 or so.

Wind and rain. Storms are forecast for around 3 pm and later. Finishing the round today may be a problem. It's already rained a little here in Atlanta.

Couples is blowing up.

So are Larry Mize and Sean O'Hair, both +4 on the day so far, pretty much dropping out of striking range to -1 and even respectively. Zach Johnson's +3 through 7 holes, falling to +1, and needs to get his head out of his ass if he wants to make the cut.

Meanwhile, Jose Maria Olazabal has moved into the thick of things: -2 today and -3 for the tournament.
