Just saw this

That means as of right now, Dusty Brown or George Kottaras is the Red Sox starting catcher. Clearly another move has to be made, but it's a bit scary to think about that.

Quote

Red Sox non-tendered catcher Kevin Cash.
Boston's only other non-tender candidate was reliever Javier Lopez, but he figured to get an offer and has. Cash hit .225/.309/.338 in 142 at-bats as Jason Varitek's backup last season and did a nice job catching Tim Wakefield's knuckler. It'd be no surprise to see the Red Sox re-sign him as a backup at a later date.

Yeah, well, sometimes it is. I'd rather hold this girl's hand then go back for a second dip on 90% of the grade-D STD-factory pussy I've stuck it in over my lifetime. She's so far out of my league, though, I mentally refer to myself as "Javier Lopez" when she's around. -- JimBoSox9

And our long national nightmare comes to a close.

I'd rather have Brown AND Kottoras as our MLB catchers than bring Cash back.
In response, Veeck threatened to request an official ruling on whether Yankees shortstop and reigning MVP Phil Rizzuto was a short ballplayer or a tall midget.

Cash did prove he could catch Wakefield, which was his most valuable attribute. And even though his hitting ability was a little less than Mirabelli, he still would have been a better catcher than Kottoras and Brown with very little MLB experience. All I know is this, is that the Red Sox need to figure out this catching situation soon.

In all fairness it isn't over yet. There's still a chance they try to sign Cash after the fact, but who knows at this point?

No big surprise here. Kottaras bears even more watching now....He's out of opitions and catching being what is I don't think he'd make through waivers to get to Pawtucket, and that's assuming he'd even accept the assignment.

Very good point. You have to think between the September call-up last season over Brown and having him and Brown as the only two on the 40-man right now that the Sox are expecting Kottaras to be on the opening day roster.

You have to keep in mind that both Brown and Kottoras caught Zink last year at AAA, so Cash's value is really a complete wash if those guys can work it out with Wakefield during the spring. I assume if theres a Bard-esque fiasco during the spring, Cash will get a phonecall but other than that, theres absolutely no need for him to be on this team anymore.

Good luck, Kevin Cash. Class guy and stepped it right up with Wake.
And while he's never been on a big league roster because of his bat, IIRC all 3 of his HRs went completely out over the Monster seats.
Hope he catches on somewhere.

He'll have a job someplace, if indeed they don't sign him back here.

The upside of wherever he ends up next is that he won't be a freaking lightening rod for a fan base enraged with the starting catcher's ineptitude. He can just be a middle-of-the-pack backup.

If Cash is middle of the pack, I'd hate to see the back end.

Cash did have a better VORP than Varitek last year. I know the sample size was small but Christ if this doesn't underline Varitek's suck, I don't know what does.

I am sure Cash will have a job next year but I believe his days are over with the Sox.

Thanks for the service at any rate.
