Selected by the Boston Red Sox in the 12th round (their 13th pick, No. 384 overall) of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft...signed by Quincy Boyd...went 6-8 with a 4.11 ERA (48 ER, 105.0 IP) and 120 strikeouts in 17 starts as a junior at High Point University (N.C.) in 2007...named Second Team All-Big South as a sophomore in 2006...played for the Bourne Braves of the Cape Cod League.
2006 (sophomore): Was 2nd team All-Big South as a starting pitcher, leading the team with a 7-5 record in 109.2 IP with 112 strike outs and only 32 walks… Had an ERA of 3.86, 8th best in the Big South… Was 6th in the League in opponents batting average (.258), 4th in IP, 3rd in strike outs, and 2nd in games started (17)… Was voted Big South Pitcher of the Week the last week of the regular season, and saved his best for last, winning the Panthers 1st game of the Conference Tournament 1-0 in 10 innings vs. Coastal Carolina, going 9.1 IP with 12 strike outs, 3 walks, while only giving up 5 hits… Was the Panthers 1st player to play summer ball in the Cape Cod League, playing for the Bourne Braves… Recorded 45 strike outs and only 9 walks in 30 IP, which was 12th best in the Cape.
2005 (freshman): Starting pitcher for 14 of the 16 games he played... led team with a 6-4 record... Finished 3rd in the Big South Conference with a team leading 90 strike outs... threw a team leading 94.1 innings (8th in Big South Conference).
Prep: Ranked the 65th best prospect in the country by Perfect Game, and No. 14 in the state of Florida... four-year letterman at Fort Lauderdale HS... three-year All-State and All-County selection... struck out 149 hitters in 86 innings and had an 0.63 earned-run average his senior year... third-team All-County his freshman year... Broward County's career strikeout leader (465).
A starter in college, Portice has a good future as a bullpen arm. His arsenal includes a splitter and a fastball, both of which are average to above average. Strikes out a lot of hitters. Extreme groundball pitcher. Impressive splits against righties. Struggles with control on occasion. Needs to work on his consistency.
