Scouting Report:

A starter in college, Portice has a good future as a bullpen arm. His arsenal includes a splitter and a fastball, both of which are average to above average. Strikes out a lot of hitters. Extreme groundball pitcher. Impressive splits against righties. Struggles with control on occasion. Needs to work on his consistency.

Eammon leaves Greenville and will start the season with the new Salem Red Sox in Virginia.

He gets some good comments from Sox Prospects.

Scouting Report: Live arm with a deceptive but violent delivery. Gets a lot of torque with a tornado-style delivery, where he turns his back completely from the plate before rotating into his delivery. After his windup, he delivers the ball quickly, leaving the batter with little opportunity to get an eye on the ball. Gets his fastball up to the low-to-mid 90s. Also makes use of a very good low 80s changeup with nice downward movement. His curveball is a work in progress. A starter in college, Portice has a very good future as a bullpen arm. Outstanding strikeout numbers. Extreme groundball pitcher. Impressive splits against righties. Struggles with control on occasion. Needs to work on his consistency. A candidate for a major breakout season in 2009.

Eammon had a great season debut for Salem as the team beat Frederick 3-2. He pitched 6 innings and allowed 2 runs. His one game ERA is 3.00. Looks like he is exhibiting the control that has been a concern.

From the Roanoke Times:

Thanks to Salem starter Eammon Portice, who gave up just two runs on two hits in six innings, and Lin who went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a stolen base, the Red Sox pulled off a 3-2 rain-soaked victory over the Keys at Salem Memorial Ballpark to even the Carolina League-opening series at 1 game each.

Portice cruised through five of his six innings. His only hiccup came in the third when Frederick's Brandon Waring led off with a double down the left-field line and went to third on a groundout by Wally Crancer.

Pedro Florimon then ripped a slider over the right-field corner for his first home run since 2007, a two-run jack that put the Keys ahead 2-1.

But Portice, who had retired the first six batters in order, righted himself to send down the next 11 as well. He threw just 61 pitches through six innings and gave up only those two hits.

"He had very good command of his fastball and his split-finger was swing-and-miss, which made his slider that much more effective," Epperson said.

"I like the way he responded [after the home run.]He was able to regroup and get back on track."

Eammon had an ugly outing today against the Potomac Nationals. He only lasted through 5 innings after allowing 4 runs in the 4th. All earned runs in these 2 games have come off lefties. Salem loses in 7, 8-2.

Portice delivered another solid outing, allowing just one run, a second-inning homer, on two hits in five innings in Saturday's April 25 game against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. Portice didn't get the win, as the Red Sox bats didn't come alive until the 7th inning (after being silent for 18 innings). Salem went on to win 3 - 2.

Most of the game's attention was on Pelicans starter Jeff Locke who was unhittable through the first 6 innings.

Seems unlucky to have a WHIP<1.0 and K/9>9 and yet an ERA of 4.04. Is there something going on that these numbers dont tell us?

Having their biggest come back of the season, a Winston-Salem 6 run 7th inning denied Portice a win.

The Red Sox led 7-0 after 3 flawless innings by Portice. Salem lost the game 8-7.

With Portice on the mound to begin the seventh, he gave up a homer, making the score 7-2. Portice yielded a single and another walk before he departed after six-plus innings.

The charge from behind overshadowed a strong performance by Red Sox starter Eammon Portice, a former High Point University pitcher who entered last night with a 2.40 earned-run average in three starts on the road.

Portice didn't allow an earned run through six innings, and had struck out seven and walked one.

"He mixed his pitches well, and he's a little deceptive the way he turns (with his back to hitters on the windup)," [Dash Manager] McEwing said.

Portice has been demoted to Lowell and Josh Papelbon was put on the 7-day DL. Both moves were most likely related to acquiring pitchers Casey Kelly from Greenville and Andrew Dobies off the DL from Portland.

Portice returned on June 4 from his stay in Lowell and promptly pitched 2 days later to help the Sox snap a 5 game slide.

QUOTE
FREDERICK, Md. -- Right-hander Emmon Portice returned to the Salem Red Sox on Thursday and apparently ready to pitch.

Portice allowed just three hits over five innings as Salem defeated the Frederick Keys 5-1 on Friday night in the first game of a Carolina League doubleheader.

QUOTE
Portice (3-3) permitted just one unearned run and struck out seven. Robert Coello allowed a walk and struck out three in two innings of scoreless relief to record his first save of the season.

And some additional good press:
QUOTE
Losers of five straight games, the Red Sox rediscovered the winning formula behind dominant pitching that held the Keys to just five hits in a marathon doubleheader at Harry Grove Stadium. Salem used five superb innings by Eammon Portice in game one to set the tone in game one's 5-1 victory...

With his dad in the stands and the largest crowd of the season, Portice pitched a 7 inning shut out against the Myrtle Beach Pelicans. The Red Sox went on to win 6-0.

QUOTE
Terry Portice has a simple request. All he wants from his son is seven shutout innings, and no walks.

"He asks for that every time out," Salem Red Sox starter Eammon Portice said.

On Friday, when the Red Sox desperately needed it and with his father in the stands along with the largest crowd at Salem Memorial Ballpark this season, the younger Portice came through.

Portice pitched the first seven innings of Salem's 6-0 shutout win over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in front of 6,001 fans. The Red Sox had lost five straight Carolina League games and had been held scoreless for their last three.

Despite a loss to Lynchburg, Portice delivered in his last game of the regular season going 6 innings with a one run outing.

The lone chip on Portice came in the first inning when Chase d'Arnaud led off with a double. d'Arnaud went to third when a pitch got away from catcher Danny Butler, who was making his first Carolina League start after joining the team from short-season Lowell on Sept. 2.

Eammon Portice can add his own chapter now.

Portice broke the golden rule of pitchers -- never walk the leadoff man -- and the Lynchburg Hillcats made him and his Salem teammates pay for it.

QUOTE
Portice allowed three runs on four hits and two walks in six innings, all but two of those hits came in that pivotal third inning.
"I blew up," Portice said. "I just wasn't getting on top of [the ball] enough and I walked two guys. The baseball gods punished me with a squib down the line.

"I was kicking myself afterward."

Epperson said he was pleased that Portice did not lose his composure afterward and stayed on for three scoreless innings after the third. But the Hillcats had seized momentum along with the lead in the third, and they would not give it back.

Nice comments from Amateur Scouting Directing Jason McLeod in a WEEI Chat Wrap interview:

QUOTE
What type of prospect is Eammon Portice, who led the Carolina League in strikeouts (141 in 128.1 innings)?
Eammon is a versatile guy that provides a different look as he has a deceptive delivery and will use different angles. As you mentioned, he has swing & miss stuff as evidenced by his strikeouts and has put himself in position to be considered in the future.

Nice write up in SoxProspects highlighting "sleepers."
QUOTE
2010 Outlook: Featuring an excellent low-90’s fastball, Portice is a pitcher that likes to attack hitters and can produce a good number of groundballs when he is on. Throwing with an unconventional delivery, he turns his back completely away from the plate before whipping the ball quickly out of the windup towards the plate. This gives hitters less of a look at his offerings and allows him to hide the ball until very late in his release. Portice also features a solid-average split-fingered fastball and uses it when he is ahead in the count to finish batters off. He’s been able to maintain high strikeout totals in the low minors.

It's official. Portice has been assigned to Portland according to the Press Herald.
QUOTE
PITCHERS: Robert Coello, Bryce Cox, Andrew Dobies, Felix Doubront, Stephen Fife, Tommy Hottovy, Casey Kelly, Ryne Lawson, Ryne Miller, Eammon Portice, Jason Rice and Kyle Weiland.

He will be part of a 6-man rotation with his starts piggy-backing with Casey Kelly.
QUOTE
Kelly, 20, has pitched only half a season of pro ball. He will be on a limited pitch count in Portland. Manager Arnie Beyeler said it could be 50 pitches at the beginning, which means only about three innings a start. That is where the sixth "starter" comes in. Portice, who started 25 games for Salem last year, is likely the one to piggyback Kelly's starts.

April 12 - Sea Dogs vs. New Britain Rock Cats
Portice earns his first win.
QUOTE
Kelly's replacement, Eammon Portice, employing his best Luis Tiant back-to-the-hitter impression, looked more like the hot prospect.

Portice allowed two hits in four innings and Ray Chang drove in three runs with a pair of doubles Monday night as the Portland Sea Dogs extended the Rock Cats' season-opening losing streak to four with an 8-2 victory before 3,964 at New Britain Stadium. Portice allowed two hits in four innings.

April 18 - Sea Dogs vs. Trenton ThunderA win for Portice.
QUOTE
Eammon Portice (2-0) relieved Kelly and got the win for his 22/3 innings of work.

Portice gave up a home run to Brandon Laird on his first pitch in the fourth inning. After a walk and single, Portice settled down and retired seven straight batters, four by strikeout.

Barbara,
Is there any video of Portice's unusual delivery? I hear it's almost Tiantian.

Nevermind. Found it.

Looks like he is on a pitch count, from the Portland Press Herald:

QUOTE
Sea Dogs pitcher Eammon Portice, a reliever who earned the spot start, pitched well in five innings of work. He allowed one run on three hits, striking out three and surrendering no walks.

"He was supposed to throw four innings," Sea Dogs Manager Arnie Beyeler said about Portice, "but he ended up being able to throw five because he was so efficient."

A new look in Portland

May 3 - Sea Dogs vs. Reading Phillies

But with one out in the sixth, Reading got four straight singles and a double by Pinckney.

Eammon got a nice shout out in the Globe today. He is old for a prospect in AA but seems to be finding his niche in relief.
QUOTE
Eammon Portice will turn 25 next month, a little old for a prospect, and the Red Sox are trying to determine where the righthander best fits into their plans. The answer appears to be the bullpen.

Portice was used almost exclusively as a starter for three seasons after the Sox took him in the 12th round of the 2007 draft out of High Point University in North Carolina.

He led the Carolina League and all Sox minor leaguers with 141 strikeouts last season. That led the Sox to believe that perhaps his mix of pitches would prove most effective in relief. Portice throws a split-finger fastball, a slider, and a two-seam sinking fastball.

“We thought shorter stints would help his velocity with his fastball and help make him more aggressive,’’ said player development director Mike Hazen. “His split seemed to play a little better out of the bullpen, too.’’

Through eight appearances for Double A Portland, the Sox appear to have made the right decision. Portice has struck out 22 over 23 2/3 innings and walked only three.

His ERA is 4.18, thanks to a poor outing against Reading May 3. But beyond that, Portice has impressed and is putting himself in line for a promotion.

“There has been little deviation,’’ Hazen said. “He has interesting stuff. The transition to the bullpen has been positive for him, and Eammon has been all for it. He’s somebody we’re keeping a close eye on.’’
