October 13, 2008 - Lester goes to work on Columbus Day

THE OFFENSE PUT UP ONE FUCKING RUN, ONE.
Lester fell behind early but unlike Beckett he sacked up and went 3 more innings without giving up a run. The offense was just pathetic today. Would a better start from Lester have helped things? Maybe, who knows? All I know is that unless he pitched a shutout ONE FUCKING RUN is not going to win this game.

Time for some lineup changes Tito. And pray we get the "good" Wake.

For whatever reason, this loss doesn't really bother me. I was annoyed early on, but I don't think there's any reason to panic or expect some type of collapse by the Sox.
Eh, I dunno. The injuries are really taking a toll on this team, which is why this is different than 2007 or 2004.

I also miss when I was 20 and a light breeze would get my cock as stiff as petrified wood. Unfortunately, neither the Ortiz nor the hard-on of my youth is coming back soon.
Well, maybe now that TBS has annointed the Rays as the new champion, now perhaps the strike zone might get expanded for Red Sox pitchers as well.
Wakefield, just to get us to be able to play in the dump in Tampa.

Whatever pep talk the veterans gave after going down to the Indians 3-1 last year should be dusted off before tomorrow's game.
It's an obvious must win
Francona has to go around and "touch" all the players tomorrow morning.

Lot more baseball to be played.

At least I got a new sig out of the deal. This game is going to be supremely aggravating.
I hope the Sox dont even offer Tek any type of contract at all. I also hope he goes swimming in Mariano Rivera's pool.

Last years pep talk involved Beckett throwing and he was basically a guaranteed win.

Right, it was "win this with Beckett on the mound and get it back to Fenway." Now it's "Pray for Good Wake."

When your # 1 and #3 hitters are a combined 0-24, that spells trouble. Time for Ellsbury to sit and give Coco a shot, or at least move Jacoby down in the order.
Hopefully Wake can throw some of these hot hitters into a funk.

...at Fenway.Right, it was "win this with Beckett on the mound and get it back to Fenway." Now it's "Pray for Good Wake."
I was reading the start to the game thread today. So much humor, so much joy, and confidence.
So much bullshit. And I'm starting to thoroughly blame David Ortiz. He's had one big hit in these playoffs, back in Game 2 of the DS -- timing that might have made us believe these playoffs would be business as usual. It's not just the men left on base, either, but the free out he creates every single inning that always ends up being an inning killer. Having an automatic out in the heart of your lineup is as toxic as it gets.
I mean no offense when I say it -- he'll be joyous again next year, I'm sure -- but if a Manny who refuses to produce can be shipped out of town, then it shouldn't be a big deal to move an Ortiz who can't produce down in the order.

I'll repeat what I said earlier. losing Game 2 felt like the NYGiants scoring that TD on the final drive in the Super Bowl, as though the end of good times had arrived
Not even close.
This was a bad game, but you're comparing apples and oranges here. The Giants drive was a gut punch that I hadn't experienced since the Boone home run. The Boone home run was probably more traumatic (since I was there and all of 15 years old), but the Super Bowl loss was a different kind of pain. There was redemption for the Boone home run (defeating the Yankees and winning it all), but there is no redemption for losing a chance at the undefeated season.
I have a hard time believing Pats/Sox fans could feel this way.

Yeah I have no idea where you're getting that feeling. One loss meant the series in a best of 7 was tied 1-1. And the other foiled chances at an undefeated season. Yup, I still don't get it.

Saw this one from section 36, row 19 in the nearest bleacher section to the blacked out section. No positive rhythm at all to that game. Lester gives up a couple bombs. Big Popup does nothing. Tek and Cora look sad except for one lucky Cora ground ball. Pedroia has two smashes off the left field wall with no one on then they have a nascent rally and he GIDP's. Ugh.
On top of which, a woman and her daughter show up in the third inning for the seats immediately to my right. She got all pissy at a pretty innocuous roll of the eyes and mutter of "the third inning" and got upset that I was "clapping loud". So, I've got Ms. Negativekarmasinkhole next to me for about 5 innings. Lovely.
I'll be curious to see what Lester did wrong. He must have done something wrong. Those coudln't have been the wrong pitches to call. Tek called them. Therefor they were the right choices. No other catcher ever looks at a scouting report. No other catcher can call for pitches in such a way as to mix up the various possible offerings and keep hitters off balance. Only Tek.

Because you're taking it too literally.
Game 2 was a game that should have been won, only to see once reliable players falter and the ability to come through in the big moment fade away. The carry-over into Game 3, when the team realized that it needed to re-establish itself, was a complete disaster. The Sox are only going at this point as far as their 4-5 best players can carry them when given the chance. Age and injury have weakened that sense that they can rebound from any adversity.
And that's what reminds me of the Patriots. It isn't what the SB loss meant as a conclusion to the season that preceeded it. It's what that loss foreshadowed for this season, when age and injury have taken away the sense of invincibility.
I'll be very happy to be proven incorrect, but I get the sense that this ALCS could be over sooner rather than later

First I'm going to close my eyes and ignore pitchers. (that was easy)
Second - I'm going to imagine that Ortiz and Ellsbury are going to adjust their approach at the plate instead of waiting for the Rays pitchers to throw them hitter's pitches. (that was easy - this is like yoga)
Then, I'm going to say to myself, "Self...the Red Sox split the first series in Leningrad, take 2 out of 3 in Boston and split the final series in Leningrad and move on to the WS at 4-3.
Easy.

Oh E5 Yaz, I've always seen your posts as ones that trancend message boarding. But, my friend from Castle Rock, your are incorrect in this case. It will surely take us 6 games at least, but make no mistake. "WE'VE GOT 'EM RIGHT WHERE WE WANT 'EM". And if you continue to doubt, please start chanting "Hanta yo".
This always seems to work fo me.

I think the most poignant occurrence of the evening was looking at the side scoreboard thing between innings that shows the next three batters up, and it was Tek/Cora/Dreamboat, and all of them had ".000" next to their names. I wish I had a camera that could have taken a clear picture of this. Of course, those three accounted for the only run of the game the next inning.
And dammit, I left in the 9th after consulation with my wife. With a 2 hour drive home, and a babysitter at $10/hr, the team I saw tonight was not worth the extra $5 to watch the end of the game.
But they're a win away from us feeling better about all of this. Let's see what happens.
That being said, a horrible playoff exit might serve the team well in 2009 by making it easier not to retain certain parts of the team next season.
