Win this one.

Damon's shoulder doesn't sound ready to go via Boston Herald this morning. I don't know what his numbers are against Lily, but, if expected (b/c he's a LH), tonight's as good a night as any to give him a full day off. Hopefully, Manny will be back to his mashing ways against LH's tonight. Really could use at least 2 outta 3 for this series.

This Lilly domination of the Sox has got to stop. Someone mentioned earlier in the year how he might be harboring a mega-grudge against the Sox ever since that bush-league BS in the 03 ALDS when players had written LILLY on the backs of their jackets to goad the crowd. Utterly embarrassing on the part of the Sox and may well have motivated Lilly to give a little extra against us. The numbers at least seem to support this:

Post-bush league BS: 8 starts, 2.86 ERA
Pre-bush league BS: 5 starts, 5.54 ERA

All the more surprising given Lilly's overall numbers have not improved pre vs. post, and the Sox as a team have become a much-better hitting team since. Regardless, we need to get to him tonight.

If there were ever a time the Red Sox NEEDED to beat this guy, it's today. It's just his second start following a lengthy DL stint. His last start had him out of the game after just 2.1IP, giving up 3 earned to Baltimore on 3 hits and 5 walks (did notch 2 Ks, though). He wound up losing that game 5-0.

Patience might be the name of the game tonight: he allowed 8 baserunners while getting 7 outs. Give Charlie some run support and put these hosers away.

If that's all the motivation Lilly needs to be a good pitcher, then the Blue Jays should contract all of their opponents in away games to goad on their crowds.

A 3.5-game lead is bigger than a 3-game lead.

Win.

1. Johnny Damon, CF
2. Edgar Renteria, SS
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Manny Ramirez, LF
5. Jason Varitek, C
6. Kevin Millar, 1B
7. Trot Nixon, RF
8. Bill Mueller, 3B
9. Tony Graffanino, 2B

With Papi's back still being stiff and with Mirabelli being 6 for 15 with 3 HR's lifetime against Lilly, I think Ortiz should get another day off and Belli should DH. Ortiz is 2 for 19 lifetime against Lilly anyway.

Agreed. Although, with Lilly being recently back from the DL and still trying to get back into his routine, it may not matter much.

So everything I've ever seen, read, heard or thought about Ted Lilly says "Make him throw a lot of pitches early." So Graff goes out on 4 pitches and ER gets out on two pitches. That's terrible.

I believe the proper comment to that inning would be, "There's plenty of game left. We'll work the counts and get to him."

Dear Red Sox:

See how the Blue Jays are patient with Arroyo, which results in them getting hits and walks and increasing his pitch count? Be like them.

Love,
941827

P.S. See what Hilly did? Don't do that.

From my experience, if Tek comes out to talk to Bronson before inning 3-4 that's not good.

Here's to thinking positive and I hope it works! Whatever he said. :D

J&J speculated rentria's back might be bothering him...claiming he is not getting down on balls lately.

not sure which is worse, that excuse or just plain lack of effort??

I always hated them on Belly. But the moment he pulled them down (the Yankees series in Boston mid July to be percise), it was the beginning of the end for him in beantown.

I was surprised the ball that defelcted of Myers' glove Friday night got under him, which gave the Yankees another run.

It is obvious even with the behind the plate camera that Lilly doesn't have his foot on the rubber. Is it worth calling him on it even perhaps just to upset him or throw him off a bit?
