i SWEAR i thought "wouldnt it be fucked up if the replaced 'and the mad dog' with 'francesa' on that old opening..."
i cant believe i actually called that horrible nonsense.
ugh

EDIT: His new show will be called Mike'd Up: Francesa on the FAN

they clearly didnt do too much brainstorming for either the title, or the opener.

When I heard the SAME song and basically the SAME lyrics I thought it was a practical joke. Nope, just a lazy jingle writer.

Mike KILLED ARod for all the GIDPs and Cano for his lazy play.

I really miss Russo today who would be hilarious dancing on the Yankees grave.

Mike probably wouldn't have given up if Chris was there, he wouldn't want to hear it from him. So we get a little more honesty. And a less inviting show without Chris, of course.

Okay did I hear him right. He just said Pedroia is having a career year. And Cano is having a bad year but he will have more doubles, HRs and RBI?

You did hear correctly. Well, he *may* ultimately be right about the HRs. Maybe.

You can tell how much he can't stand Pedroia though. Great stuff.

After killing Cano in the earlier part of today's show, he couldn't stand the thought that the yappy little 2nd baseman might be better than Robbie.

And he sound exasperated when a caller said that Pedroia would get some MVP consideration.

Is there any doubt that if Pedroia and Cano had been drafted by each other's team that Francesa would be trumpeting Dustin as the eventual successor to CI as the next MFY captain?

But as a Sox, he's just the "yappy little 2nd baseman".

Totally true! Although to be fair, Pedroia is one of those guys where if he's on your team you love him but if he's not you hate him. Kind of like Ken Linseman, but shorter.

This Cano/Pedroia thing with Mike is a bit misleading. I don't deny that he undervalues Pedroia, which is understandable to me since 1) he doesn't watch the Sox every day, and 2) part of his job is to get Red Sox fans pissed, so they'll call.
But it would be wrong to think he's doing that because he wants Cano to look good in that argument.
Mike's diatribe against the play of Cano was particularly venemous. He went absolutely nuts about Cano's play, getting angrier and angrier as he went along. There's no way he's trying to promote Cano at the expense of Pedroia.

IMO part of FFF is his blindspot he has about the Sox, particularly when they are compared in some way to his beloved Ys. Francessa is in many respects a 14 year old when it comes to the Ys. He's not entirely rational, he is a fan and his head and heart hurts when they screw-upand fail him.

Having said that, as you posted, he spent the earlier part of the show (Tuesday) killing Cano for his lackluster play, and he cited a few examples, the crappy throw to Jeter against the BJs last Saturday and the terrible no hustle play against the LAA a couple of weeks ago that let the winning run come in from 2nd. In contrast Pedroia seemingly has the dirtiest uni in the AL, and the guy can flat out play the game.

IIRC the only bone Francessa threw the Sox was that they had a lot of '"gamers".
.
And as posted a couple of days ago, when a caller said that Pedroia was an equal to Cano and would attract MVP votes, FFF would have none of it.saying that any comparisons would have to be for more than 1 year (we got comps for almost 2 and Pedroia comps very well). And he totally dismissed the MVP comments.

I think Mike is greatly concerned that Cano will be content with his current skill level due to the fact he received his first big contract already.

It will be incredibly interesting to see where both of these players are in 5 years. With Pedroia's history of work ethic, I have no fear he will continue to bust tail after getting his first large deal in the upcoming years. Cano...we shall see

General agreement with your overall point, but there's a more subtle bias at work here. It's not that he wants Cano to "look good" - it's that he believes Cano is so much better than Pedroia that it galls him to see Pedroia outperform him. Since he can't accept that Pedroia is the better player he can only understand Pedroia's level of play in the context of Cano playing beneath his talent. Which is why he has been going nuts over Cano.

Add to this the fact that Francessa hates Pedroia's attitude - "lack of respect" is what he called it last year when Pedroia commented on A-Rod's dirty slide - and any praise that comes Pedroia's way is likely to be delivered in a very condescending manner.

This isn't necessarily a Francessa problem, since we hear it a lot from others in the media. Of course, the way Pedroia is playing, it looks like we'll have to get used to hearing it for some time.....

This is an extension of the general NYY premise that the opposition never defeats the Yankees, the Yankees defeat themselves.

I feel bad for Mike, but I cannot watch this anymore. Without Dog the show is boooring, and unwatchable. I even put on M Kay for the first time the other day, as Dog was on, and that was great radio. RIP Mike, things were so stale he had to do the the football picks with the radio engineer. Predict Mike will be of YES by midyear, and might be off radio within a year. Its a real snorefest

Totally agree. I am so glad xm offers dog in the online packages, Sirius has yet to put Dog online. Mike has been awful solo no personality just brutal. He needs to get a partner and quick or things could get ugly for him. I think the main question is will people who have been listening to him and dog for 19 years turn away from Wfan?

That really is the big question on my mind. We all know how much Mike uses ratings to determine the worth of something. What if the show loses a large amount of audience when the next ratings book comes out?

How will he spin that? Should be very interesting down the road...

A year or two ago, Mike said that he would never get another partner after Dog. I think Mike is delusional enough to think he's entertaining by himself. He fancies himself as something of a pundit and humorist, yet he's consistently ill informed and his jokes are as funny as tooth decay (that won't stop him from laughing at them anyway). I agree that it may not be his choice, but if he doesn't have someone sharing the 5+ hours of air time, the show is doomed.

Typical Mike solo show goes like this:

Mike states his theory from 1:05 to 1:15. It's usually "I think the Yankees should do X."
Mike then takes calls from 1:25 to 6:25 from fans who say "I think the Yankees should do Y."
Mike disagrees with the callers and sticks to his theory. For 5 hours.

To elaborate on the first 10 minutes Mikes would state

"I think the Yankees should do X."
"The Yankees should just do X"
"X is the way to go for the Yankees"
"I think the Yankees should do X."
"It just comes down to the Yankees need to do X"

Somewhat on topic.

CBS' Jim Nantz was on Imus yesterday morning and mentioned the break-up of Mike and The Mad Dog.

The topic was brought-up when Nantz stated that he was at Francesa's home on Long Island when the Sarah Palin introduction was made.

Nantz described the break-up as something "I don't understand"....."they complimented each other so well"....."hopefully there'll be a chance to re-unite again someday".

Perhaps many of us already felt this way; but it solidifies the notion that Russo was the one that really got tired of Francesa and wanted to steer the ship a little more.

Back on topic:

Other than this little thread, I haven't heard a single thing in Newsday or in public opinion (informal chat within my circles on Long Island) describing Russo's new show or new role. Tuning to Grant Hill with Mad Dog about the NBA in the face of NFL Week 1 and baseball pennant races and the US Open Tennis is a tough listen.

Well, the show doesn't really start for real until Sept 15th. There was a brief recap of his first preview show in Newsday: http://www.newsday.c...0,3217121.story

More importantly, MSG is making a big push to steal Mike'd Up from YES. Despite Mike's repeated claim that his show will be on YES no matter what and that the Yankees have never had a problem with the show, check out this article which states that Randy Levine can't wait to get rid of him and replace it with a new talk show of their own which would come from the new Yankee Stadium:

I give Francessa credit for this: he never shies away from praising Francona and the Red Sox success. He was effusive about it last year when they did the show from the Monster seats. He may hate them but he is in no way in the same league as Michael Kay when it comes to the subject of the Red Sox.

Mike has said on the air a few times that while he hates the Red Sox (I assume that's the Yankee fan in him speaking), he has nothing but high praise for the front office and staff, and how they used to treat Chris and him whenever the M&MD show did a broadcast from Fenway.

IMO, the past week leading up to the Jets-Pats game, for Francesa, has been an interesting one. He has been Beckett-like in his praise for Brady, but clearly relishing the possibility of a Belichick team losing to the Jets and the possibility of an ascendency for the Jets. It was almost as if he became sort of a Jets fan.

He rightly saw this game as one that really only had major implications for the Jets - as a statement game, to knock the Pats down a peg, to raise doubt in the locker room, to maybe make Moss get uncomfortable (which based upon the #'s could still be the case if one thought that way).

I don't know, but he seems to be a great frontrunner; with the MFY having an abnormally bad year where they don't get into what he only recently categorizes as a "crapshoot", I get the sense that he is pulling for the Jets more than he might normally even though it was versus BB. It felt that way over the last couple of shows. Nevertheless, I look forward to hearing him early this week.
