Lewis's anchor leg was 8.85 by the way.

This needs to be quoted.

Good video of Lewis's anchor leg.

An odd version of the "time trap" is the anchor leg of the relay. It is not a true running start, its more like a jogging start. The
Lewis's anchor leg was 8.85 by the way.

That's almost as impressive as Jason Lezak's 46.06 anchor leg of the 4x100 freestyle relay.

Yes, the second 100m is signifigantly faster than 1/2 the total time because it's from a flying start. You can't say the 100 split is 9.6 or 9.7.

So Johnson/Bolt probably ran splits of 10.3 and 9-flat or something like that. Makes obvious sense now that I think about it.

He broke the record by 2/100th of a second. If this speaks to anything, it speaks to the awesomeness of Johnson's record - having lasted 12 years, and still only being broken by 2/100th by a guy as phenomenal as Bolt, who this time DID appear to be going at 100%.

Sorry--I should have been clear--I was referring to the 100.

How must it feel to be the guy on the lane just outside Bolt watching him fly by after about 50 meters?

Is a 100-200-400 triple in 2012 possible or does the track schedule not permit it?

This announcer putting such an emphasis on the World Record is pissing me off.

Why? It was pretty much assumed that no one would touch that record -- like, ever. It's a big deal.

Any those two morons got DQ'd. How could Spearman be such a bonehead? The announcer said it was the perfect lane for him because he doesn't run the turn well and he still screws up.

That thick Jamaican accent isn't going to hurt Bolt's promotion deals one bit, even if he's cast in a speaking role.

I give Spearmon credit. He was able to maintain composure in a situation that was rough, and with some tough questions.

Got to love Dix's reaction. I can't blame him. Maybe he'll grow to love his bronze, but he knows he finished 5th,

Pretty amazed that even the Count Rogge is enough of a douchebag to make these comments at this time. Perhaps Bob Costas sent him a note saying that Bolt was taking away from NBC's Michael Phelps coverage.

I wish the Olympics could exist without the IOC.

Of course we were the last people on earth to be able to watch this race on TV, but that's neither here nor there. That uncontacted tribe in the Amazon saw this race before us.

A great many athletes avoid the Olympic Village like the plague...well, like the common cold and flu anyway. Traditionally, the Olympic Village is a huge gathering ground for exotic germs from all over the world, and has, at least at the last several winter Games been home to a pretty nasty flu outbreak.

The "live" events are what piss me off the most. There's no fucking reason at all that we have to wait three hours to see what most of the rest of the country got to see live, especially since it would still be in prime time on the West Coast if they ran it live across the country. It's a sporting event! And then they give a bullshit excuse like they want everyone to see the race at the same time. What? By not letting everyone see the race at the same time?!?

Anyway, Bolt annoys me. I like the now-bronze medalist's response. I saw a quote from the now-silver medalist who said it felt a little like a charity case.

I would have been pissed if the Netherlands dude wasn't disqualified but Spearmon was. I thought he remained fairly composed given the circumstances.

Beijing provided over 100,000 condoms to the Athlete's Village. They are worried it isn't enough. I'd imagine there are a lot of bugs that are getting around in the Village.

A great many would be an overstatement. There are 11,000+ athletes, and probably a couple thousand coaches at the Olympic. The VAST majority are staying in the olympic village.

But some of the elite, huge money athletes do make other arrangements for the games. The number living off campus is probably no more than a couple percent.

No doubt if Bolt stays around for 2012, he will not stay in the Olympic village

Ya think? So those 100K condoms that won't be enough wasn't for the Chinese midget army?

On a related note, can you imagine the amount of grade A pussy guys like Phelps and Nadal are pulling in now that they're done and just chillin'? I shudder at the thought.

I meant to say many medal contenders avoid the village - until after their event(s) are done, anyway - and not just the big money guys.

Is a 100-200-400 triple in 2012 possible or does the track schedule not permit it?

The way the schedule is set up a 100-200-400 triple is unlikely. They would have to run the 200 m final and the 400m semifinal hours apart on the same day. Not to mention that you would be looking at 4 rounds each of the 100 and 200 and 3 rounds of the 400. 11 races in 6 days.

Here is the schedule:

100 Fri. - rd 1 & 2, Sat - Semis & Finals
200 Mon - rd. 1 & 2, Tues - Semis, Wed - Finals
400 Mon - Round 1, Tues - Semis, Thurs - Finals

On Tuesday the 200 m and 400 m semis are only 20 minutes apart.

The Olympic Committee altered the schedule in 1996 specifically for Michael Johnson - so he could attempt the 200-400 double.

Just as a word of advice, don't go to the Yahoo homepage. It basically spoils a couple of these.

Bad news. Both the men's and women's 4x100 teams dropped the baton in the first round of qualifying and failed to advance.

For all the time Phelps has spent in the pool over the last several years, I hope he's pulling some primo tail. He certainly deserves it. And on a related note with that, I don't know how to do the link thing, but go to NBC's site and check out the pics from the Speedo party. Aussie swimmer Grant Hackett's wife is ridiculously hot.

Well Phelps has a fan in Lohan. He does have to watch out for shrinkage though...

Edit: Apparently Phelps has been linked to model Lily Donaldson.

Well, Usain Bolt has certainly made a statement about being considered as one of the best olympic performers of all-time. Winning 3 events, all in world record time (one of which he already held) certainly puts him in good company.
