Its kinesio tape, it promotes healing by separating layers of muscle/tendon and increasing blood flow. It also takes some physical pressure off of the affected area. Seems to be growing in popularity in the US -- my chiro has me taped right now (I have achilles tendonitis) and it really helps. I notice a definite difference in between visits if I lose the tape. Comes in several cool colors, or plain beige if you're not in the Olympics and have to wear professional dress every day.

i know for avp (the pro volleyball tour) the sponsors require them to wear bikinis for televised events but I have seen clips from avp preliminary/qualifying rounds and they wore sweat pants

They're actually nicknames, but that's besides the point. They aren't Georgians anyway, but rather Brazilians. Same deal with the women's "Georgian" beach volleyball team. Yeah, it's weird, but otherwise they wouldn't even be in the Olympics if they represented Brazil since the two men's teams actually representing Brazil are much better (and, in fact, just faced off in the semi-finals).
