US clinches--Germany apparently cant get the 16.325 because it's not a difficult enough routine.

He needs a 16.325 to win it for Germany.
The only way he does that is if he impregnates the pommel horse.
That would be special.

Why don't you ask the gymnasts themselves? Look at them, they're so sad. Like "Shit, we fucked up soo bad."

fwiw, i dont like "judged" sports. waaaaay to easy to manipulate the results.
I'd say judged "sports". Exactly why in the discussion about what's a sport (from "Other Sports" several months back) one of my criteria was "objective winning criteria". Whether that criterion is met is obviously up to the judge/umpire/ref, but there's a massive difference between saying someone did/didn't get into the endzone/foot fault/touch home plate vs. awarding them a judged score in gymnastics, non-KO boxing, or figure skating.

Having said that, Kevin Tan's shitty performance was a huge drag on the score. Between rings and pommel horse, Tan was at least two points short of what was expected from him, maybe even 2.5 on a good day. Regardless, the U.S. was 3.025 behind Japan, so it just would have been bronze by a slimmer margin.
I think it was fourth-highest of the night. I don't know if pommel horse routines are just filled with tiny mistakes (hand placement? toe pointed? legs splayed? style?) or if there aren't enough fancy tricks to amass points, but it's a really low-scoring apparatus. It's also kinda lame and boring to watch.Oof. 15.350. Is that good?
I think the perfect score is 17, so getting a 16.95 is pretty much impossible, especially now that they have slow-motion replay. I think rioting, however, might be a stretch. Is there any country that into gymnastics that they'd riot over it? Even in China, I think they'd be satisfied once the coach jumped off the building (which I'm 99 percent sure he would have done). What would happen if they somehow gave him a 16.95? Riots?

For this team, given all it had to overcome, Bronze is still sweet. But was surprised when I woke up that they didnt hold the silver...

Hey...I hit the sack with 2 rotations to go and the US down 1.5 to China and up 3 on Japan...how did they not silver? Did they fuck up, or was it simply a matter of Japan having higher scoring apparati to go?
It was a combination of both (Japan had parallel bars + high bar while US had floor + pommel horse) and two US gymnasts came up lame on the pommel horse and one had a subpar floor.
I think it is actually possible to score higher than 17.0 as a Chinese gymnast had a 7.2 difficulty on, I believe, the rings.

There is no one "perfect score" anymore. Each specific routine can have a highest possible score (10 + the difficulty rating) but it's theoretically possible to jack your difficulty score up as high as you can. One of the Chinese vaults was a 7.2, so if he got all 10's he would have received a 17.2.
