I'm just glad the media isn't giving this story the attention it deserves. Because it's true. Australians hate Nastia. We went into these games with three goals, and it looks like we'll only get to achieve one of them. At least it's the most popular one.

1) Beat Great Britain. (fail)
2) Beat Michael Phelps. (fail)
3) Stop Nastia. (Sucess!)

I can't tell if you're being facetious, or if, in fact, Australia has some irrational national loathing for one particular US gymnast.

Ugh, what a joke. Interesting that Valere tied for his gold medal back in 1988, and back then, what a shocker, when 2 people got the same score, they both got the gold medal.

Oh well, hopefully Nastia can get one more medal tomorrow night.

By the way, talk about great genes, Nastia's mom is exceptionally yummy

Maybe Nastia will do an intentional scratch in her balance beam final tomorrow night, in honor of stick it

Gymnastics scoring was already so inscrutable that I didn't think the IOC could top it. I give the judges a 16.805.

Especially the Australian judge.

First of all, what the flying f*ck??? NO ONE beat Liukin. No one!!! In my world, that's first place. I can see the difficulty being a tiebreaker, but they had the same diff. score. How can anyone take this seriously (any more)? Why are these countries who don't know dingo doo doo about gymnastic judging?

Fake edit: BS tie breaker. Total BS. Take the bottom score out? WTF????

The tie-breaking procedure, while absurd, is nowhere near as bad as Nastia Liukin not winning the gold outright. He's performance just wasn't as good.

I thought the midget in third place actually had the best performance.

Kind of funny seeing all of you being so outraged while that Nastia girl herself kind of shrugs it off stating she knew she didn't have her best routine. Oh, the drama :c070:

Why don't you tell us how you really feel though?

I always thought the most logical step in deducting scores would be to take the high one out but that's just me.

And man was Liukin looking good with that pouty face the last 20 or so minutes.

They take the high one and the low one, and then after that I think they go highest remaining. Nastia's was 9.0 and He's was 8.9.

They just showed the procedure on TV. When they have the same execution score, as these two did, they go to the 7 individual scores from each judge and then remove the highest and lowest on each. So I guess that's the second tiebreaker. The third is to remove the next highest, which is what cost Nastia gold.

I think they take out the highest and lowest execution score for everyone, if I heard correctly.

Right, and after that they still had the same score. So they then removed the highest remaining of the 5.

What I mean is I think she lost on the first tiebreaker, because to determine the execution score for every competitor they remove the highest and lowest. This is how they got tied in the first place. Then they take out the lowest remaining score for the tied competitors and if one has a higher average from the remaining 3, they win. I could be missing something, but that's how I understood it.

Edit: I think we're agreeing now, except they took out the lowest remaining of the 4 left.

Here where the scores, China than US
AUS POL NZL RSA BRA BUL
CHN 9.30 9.10 9.10 8.90 9.00 8.90
USA 9.00 9.30 9.00 8.80 9.00 9.10
Always drop the two highest and lowest, this is what's averaged for the score and added to the start value
CHN 9.10 9.10 8.90 9.00
USA 9.00 9.00 9.00 9.10
The first tie breaker is to then the drop the lowest, so normally its the 2nd-5th highest scores averaged. Now it's 2nd-4th highest.
CHN 9.10 9.10 9.00
USA 9.00 9.00 9.10

So Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand all favored the Asian.
Poland and Bulgaria favored the Russian-American. Even for Brazil.
Continental bias?

No one said it was a conspiracy, I think it's incompetent judging myself.

Well, someone did say it was a conspiracy. Her dad did.

If you're qualified to think it's incompetent judging, I believe you. I wouldn't have a clue. When I watched it, I thought the midget looked the best, and she only came third. (edit: as TtP already said).

I can't tell if you're being facetious, or if, in fact, Australia has some irrational national loathing for one particular US gymnast.

I was two/thirds serious. We're fucking shattered Great Britain is going to beat us for the first time since we started taking the Olympics seriously. And we wanted to deny Phelps that last medal but we failed. That has more to do with desire for another gold medal we could use to tell the poms to get stuffed than any real hatred of your man-giant.

But no, we don't hate random American gymnasts. We suck at gymnastics, and therefore we don't care.

Australia is one of China's biggest trading partners. New Zealand signed a free trade agreement in April. South Africa's in negotiations.

(Most everyone has some sort of trade agreement with China these days, though, so it's a weak conspiracy theory.)
