Turner is one of the top all-around athletes in the Red Sox farm system. After two mediocre seasons he really exploded in Greenville last year. His stats below show that he was an extra base hit machine and at times last summer he was one of the most dangerous hitters in the minor leagues. In an interview with redsoxnation.net he states he has run the 60-yard dash in 6.5 seconds [Ellsbury has been clocked at 6.55].

He does have his vices, but that is one of the reasons I picked him. I heard that everything he hit last season was a laser beam, thus accounting for (along with some luck) his high BABIP. His walk rate is decent but his strikeout rate is horrible... it should be interesting to follow his plate discipline this year. Who knows what type of player he could be with an improved BB/K.

2005      G  AB  AVG  OBP  SLG  OPS  GPA   BsR /PA  IsoP SecA BABIP  BB%  K% BB/K
C.Turner 79 301 .289 .361 .515 .876 .291  57.0 .17  .216 .365  .367   8% 25%  .33

Which major leaguer had similar IsoP, SecA and BABIP in 2005?

At least it can't get any worse than this for Chris. His first series of 2006 was a disaster in all facets of the game as he couldn't hit and had three errors in the outfield. Chris struck out in 9 of his 18 plate appearances. On the bright side he was able to draw 4 walks and if he can keep that up once he starts to hit this should be a great year.

I wonder if his mindset has been impacted by his disappointing placement in Greenville this year? He has to think that he did everything necessary to advance to Wilmington, but now he's stuck in Low A and he isn't a spring chicken anymore. This is clearly a do or die year for him.

Chris has hit the ball a little better the last 6 games, but not much. He had a double, triple and homer which are his first three extra base hits of the year. Accompanying the drop in K% is a big drop in BB%, not really what you want to see.

Turner now is 8 for his last 20, with 4 XBH to his credit. Season line stands at: .213/.315/.447

Turner has been mashing the ball (look at his IsoP and SecA). With his AVG, OBP and SLG rising quickly it is safe to assume his early troubles are behind him. He has been striking out a lot less frequently, however the walks are still not there.

Chris has kept his average steady over the last week even though he went through an 0-12 slide. His OBP and SLG both fell a bit, with the rest of the stats all dropping slightly.

Tough week for Chris as his batting average falls 22 points and on-base percentage crashes 35 points. Another week of across the board decline.

Chris Turner has been named South Atlantic League Offensive Player-of-the-Week for the week of May 8-14, 2006. Turner posted a .400 batting average with three home runs, nine runs batted in, and a .920 slugging percentage.

As David mentioned it was a big week for Chris. His BA jumped 15 points and his OPS climbed 37 points. IsoP and SecA also made significant leaps. Interestingly, his BB% and K% stayed virtually the same and he committed 2 errors bringing his season total to 8.

Chris follows up his big week with a very poor one. His batting average tumbled 16 points and his OBP is now under .300. He also committed error #9, only Keoni De Renne (AA, SS) has more errors in our system.

Here is a quick update following the server troubles. Chris's walk rate bumped up a point since the last update, but so did his strikeout rate... At least his OBP is now over .300, even if his power has been down over the last 12 games.

He has been getting a lot of hits on the balls he puts into play recently so his average has been climbing. His power is elite, but his contact rate is 62%.

While some of the power has been missing, his BB% is up and K% is down. Halleluiah.

This continuous 60-65% contact rate is not encouraging.

Injury report
Outfielder Chris Turner was placed seven-day disabled list because of an abdominal/oblique strain. He was injured while swinging a bat during the team's four-game series at Columbus last week.

The Drive said Turner's injury could require anywhere from two to four weeks to heal. There are less than three weeks remaining in the season.
This probably ends his powerful, yet disappointing season. He finishes with 18 2B, 7 3B and 18 HR:

According to Gabe Kapler in his blog.

Quote

Outfielder Chris Turner has been swinging the bat great lately – great at bats, shows a lot of power and has a high ceiling. Chris is also a very strong character makeup guy as well.

Can you provide a link to that? I'd love to check out Kapler's blog.

edit: How did I not see that?

Chris has been assigned to Lancaster to begin the 2007 season. So far 8 of his 15 outs have come via strikeout. Ouch.

So far on the season: 82 PA | .173/.250/.387/.637 | 9% walk rate | 45% strikeout rate

That is good for a 55% contact rate.
