If Pauley can improve his control even a tiny bit, I'd say he's more than ready for AAA come June. He warranted beginning the season there with a strong 2005, but if '06 continues like this the Sox will have no choice but to call him up to Pawtucket.

Pauley's a decent prospect, isn't he? He's fairly young and has a pretty good history of success. 2.8 BB/9 and 7.4 K/9 is solid. His K rate has gotten a bit better this year (although his BB's have risen). What do the scouts say about him?

Will he get bumped up to AAA? I would guess not with Alvarez and Dinardo back in the PAW rotation but I'd like to see this guy get a shot if someone else goes down.

I'd love to see him get a shot - he's shown a near mastery of AA hitters with a sub-2.5 ERA through 9 starts, a big enough sample size (including last year's 3.81 ERA at AA) to indicate he's ready for the next level. I'd look for he and Phil Seibel to get the call to AAA relatively soon, especially if Lester's called up to stay in June.

From mainetoday.com:

Although Pauley wound up with the loss, he did so in commanding fashion. Fifteen of his first 16 pitches were strikes, and 64 of 93 overall. He opened with a strike against 24 of the 30 batters he faced.

Five times he set down the Rock Cats in order, and for the first time in 37 Double-A starts, he pitched through the eighth inning. His line: six hits, three earned runs, four strikeouts, one walk (only after three fouls on a full count) and 14 groundouts.

After another poor showing, Pauley has been demoted to AAA, where (imo) he shold spend the rest of the year barring another injury to the Sox rotation.

Pauley's 1st AAA outing was not great, nor was it extremely horrible. While he did give up 5 runs in 4.1 innings, just one was earned and he added 2 strikeouts to go along with 4 walks and 5 hits. Hard to believe that just a week and a few days ago he dominated the Yankees.

Sorry for the layoff in updates - here's Pauley's updated line in AAA:

2 GS
10.1 IP
9 H
3 K
9 BB
10 R (6 earned)
5.23 ERA

The guy's struggling in AAA right now. One has to wonder if these two poor starts aren't like what Cla Meredith went through after his unsuccessful major league callup.

His AAA line:

12 BB

Pauley had a very encouraging start on Monday, going a full 7 innings, surrendering 5 hits, 2 runs (both earned), 1 K and 1 BB.

Another miserable outing for Pauley, giving up 7 earned (3 HR) and 11 hits, striking out 7 and walking 1 in 5 IP. The struggles seem to be mounting for Pauley.

YTD in AAA:
6 GS
1-2
6.18 ERA
43 H
17 K
14 BB
39.1 IP

Silver lining? He's now striking out more people than he's walking... that's about it.

It isn't getting any better for Mr. Pauley... on the 30th of July he surrendered 5 runs (3 earned) on 4 hits and a walk in 4 innings, striking out 3. One wonders if perhaps it's near time for a trip back to AA.

YTD in AAA:
9 GS
50.1 IP
40 R (31 ER)
5.54 ERA
60 H
25 K
18 BB
10 HR - in contrast, he had just 6 HR allowed in 60 innings in AA.

How about the DL. Since that is where he currently is.

David Pauley - RHP Red Sox - Age 23
2-3, 2.39 ERA, 54 H, 47/17 K/BB in 60 1/3 IP for Double-A Portland
1-3, 5.54 ERA, 60 H, 25/18 K/BB in 50 1/3 IP for Triple-A Pawtucket
0-2, 7.88 ERA, 31 H, 10/6 K/BB in 16 IP for Boston
0-3, 5.06 ERA, 36 H, 14/6 K/BB in 26 2/3 IP (AFL)

Pauley is the only of the three players the Red Sox got from the Padres for Dave Roberts left in the organization. The 2001 eighth-round pick has posted consistently solid numbers in the minors, but he wasn't ready when the Red Sox hauled him up from Double-A at the end of May, and since he struggled in his Triple-A debut after being sent down in mid-June, he wasn't recalled in September. Pauley has a pretty good curveball and changeup, so if he could throw over 90 mph consistently, he'd probably be a fine starter in the majors. Since he can't, he'll likely be doomed to middle relief if he makes it at all.

As with Craig Hansen, I just remembered I had Buzzkill. Pauley's had some pretty good numbers so far this year, and earned his first win last night despite already having had four quality starts.

Year to date:
7 G (6 GS, 1 6 inning relief appearance)
41 IP
34 H
20 R
16 ER
33 K
8 BB
3.51 ERA

A couple more starts for Pauley since the last update:

5/21: 5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 6 K, 4 BB against Ottawa, not awful but not particularly dominant. Nice to see the 6 K's, for sure.
5/28: 6.1 IP, 4 H, 0 ER, 3 K, 0 BB against Colorado Springs; this was arguably Pauley's best outing of the year.

YTD:

9 G (8 GS)
52.1 IP
44 H
23 R (18 ER)
42 K
12 BB
7.22 K/9
2.06 BB/9
3.5 K/BB

Another solid outing for Dave to build off of his 5/28 performance on Saturday, going deeper than any other outing this year (7 IP) and yielding 6 H, 3 ER, and 2 walks while striking out 4.

YTD:
2-1, 3.19 ERA, 1.08 WHIP
10 G
59.1 IP

A shaky outing for Pauley on June 8 (6 IP, 10 H, 3 ER, 2 BB, 0 K) was followed by a strong performance against the same Richmond squad on Thursday, going 6 IP and yielding 2 runs (both earned) on 4 hits, 1 walk, and 5 strikeouts.

YTD:
4-1, 3.15 ERA, 1.14 WHIP
12 G
71.1 IP

71 H
33 R (28 ER)

Bit of a rough stretch for Pauley, as he's given up at least 3 ER in each of his last four starts, getting through the 6th inning just once. 13 K-11 BB in that stretch as well, so his peripherals are coming down to earth from his fast start. He just turned 24, so I believe there's a definite future for Pauley at the back of an MLB rotation at some point.

YTD:
16 G
5-3
3.91 ERA
92 IP
88 H
48 R (40 ER)
64 K

10 HR

With Pauley getting the callup to replace Beckett today, figured it'd be good to see how he's done in Pawtucket this year.

YTD:
3 GS
1-1
1.17 ERA
3 R (2 ER)
11 H
8 K
3 BB
1 HR
1.22 GO-AO

All in all a nice start for the 24 year old. Hopefully he can keep the Angels at bay tonight.
