Pimentel had another strong outing on Thursday, picking up the win in Salem’s 5-1 win at Lynchburg. Pimentel pitched 7.00 innings allowing 1 run (1 ER) on 3 hits while walking 1 and striking out 7.

Quick Hits:

  • Of the 7 strikeouts, 5 were swinging and 2 were looking.
  • Of the 3 hits, 2 went for extra bases: a harmless 2-out double in the first and a solo HR to lead off the second; the HR accounted for all of Lynchburg’s scoring.
  • After the solo HR was followed by a single, Pimentel reeled off a string of 16 straight batters retired before allowing a walk with one out in the seventh. He induced the next two batters into flyouts to end his outing.

This is one reason why the organization is high on Pimentel: In his last four starts, he has struck out 23 and walked just two in 22 innings. Here is another: He is only 20.

Pimentel’s control at a young age remains marvelous. It will be interesting to see his progression next season, likely at Portland. http://www.nesn.com/...t-rankings.html

Pimentel had a solid, if wild, outing on Sunday, picking up the win in Salem’s 4-1 victory over Frederick. He went 5.67 innings allowing 1 run (1 ER) on 3 hits and 4 walks while striking out 5.

Quick Hits:

  • Of the 5 strikeouts, 3 were swinging.

Pimentel bounced back with a strong effort in what was likely his final outing of the year on Friday. He pitched 6.00 innings allowing 1 run (1 ER) on 5 hits and 2 walks while striking out 8; he also threw a wild pitch. Unfortunately, the 1 run was too much for Salem’s offense and they lost to Potomac 5-0.

Quick Hits:

  • Of the 8 strikeouts, 6 were swinging and 2 were called. The 8 strikeouts tie a career high.
  • Of the 5 hits, 2 went for extra bases: a leadoff double in the second that came around to score the only run Pimentel allowed, and a one-out double in the third that was ultimately harmless.

I'll post a season wrap-up once it is definite that Pimentel's year is over.

Alex Speier

Red Sox pitcher Stolmy Pimentel, a 21-year-old who is in big league camp now, offers yet another reminder of how dramatically players signed internationally at age 16 grow. (Pimentel was signed by the Sox for just $25,000 in 2006.) The right-hander says that he now is 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds; when he signed, he estimated that he was 6-foot-2 and “so skinny — 170 or something like that”; when he pitched in the Futures at Fenway in 2008, he suggested that he was 185 pounds.

Pimentel said that with his increased size, he feels more power in his pitches, something that has led to a notable uptick in velocity (he touched 95 mph last year for the first time in his career) while also giving him the strength to maintain command.

“This year I feel stronger. Maybe I can throw harder,” said Pimentel. “I worked really hard in the offseason to come in in shape for spring training. I feel ready.”

With Spring Training upon us, I realize how swamped I’ve been and thus unable to do an in-depth summary of Pimentel’s 2010 campaign. However, I do want to at least post the numbers comparing his 2010 to his 2009 before the 2011 season gets into full swing.

Stolmy Pimentel 2009 to 2010 Comparison
Year IP BF AB H R ER BB HBP K GO FO BABIP
2009 128.66 554 509 146 65 52 30 7 109 117 142 0.351
2010 128.66 535 484 120 65 58 42 5 102 145 114 0.294
Year ERA WHIP BA OBP SLG 2B 3B HR H/9 BB/9 K/9 K/BB
2009 3.64 1.37 0.287 0.333 0.428 32 2 12 10.21 2.10 7.62 3.63
2010 4.06 1.26 0.248 0.313 0.397 25 7 11 8.39 2.94 7.13 2.43

Some highlights of the year-to-year differences:

  • By sheer coincidence, Pimentel pitched the exact same number of innings in 2010 that he did in 2009 (including his 2 postseason starts in 2009); however, he faced 19 fewer batters in 2010.
  • His ERA jumped by 0.4 while allowing the same number of runs in the same number of innings due to 6 fewer runs allowed being ruled unearned.
  • His BB/9 jumped by almost a full walk, his K/9 dropped by half a strikeout, but overall numbers remained solid because his H/9 dropped by close to 2 hits and his HR rate remained essentially unchanged.
  • Pimentel’s drastic improvement in hit rate was in part driven by a drop in BABIP, from 0.351 to 0.294. This also helps explain the improvement in BA, OBP, and SLG allowed. This corresponds to a reduction in solid contact allowed, particularly LD% (GB/FB/Pop/LD % courtesy of SoxProspects.com’s Stats section: 2009 – 40.3/33.0/8.0/18.8; 2010 – 45.8/35.4/8.5/10.3). Going forward it will be interesting to see the extent to which the decrease in line drives (and consequently the increased number of groundballs turned into outs by a Salem defense better than 2009 Greenville’s) is sustainable.

Pimentel is expected to join the AA rotation in Portland to start the 2011 season.

Every time I see this guy's name I think it says "Stormy Petrol" .. which was an old Thunderclap Newman song (now that's dating myself)

I thought the same thing. These are stormy petrels. I remember the old Python routine, "Albatross! Stormy Petrel on a stick! Gannet Ripple!"

Stolmy had much better results tonight facing just 21 batters through 6 innings. He allowed 3 hits and a walk, while striking out 7. The Fisher Cats currently boast a team OPS of .659, so grain of salt there, but nice to see nonetheless.

Pimentel is still looking for his first AA win as he did not factor in the decision in Portland's 9-4 loss at Akron on Saturday. He went 2 innings and allowed 1 run on 3 hits with no walks and no strikeouts. There was no word that I could find on why he was removed after facing just 8 batters, so it's unclear whether they're just being cautious with him coming off of injury or if he re-aggravated something.

Quick Hits:

  • Pimentel's outing:

    Akron Bottom of the 1st

    • Tim Fedroff flies out to center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker.
    • Jason Donald pops out to shortstop Vladimir Frias.
    • Beau Mills grounds out, pitcher Stolmy Pimentel to first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez.

    • Juan Diaz singles on a line drive to center fielder Jeremy Hazelbaker.
    • Chun-Hsiu Chen triples (1) on a line drive to right fielder Chih-Hsien Chiang. Juan Diaz scores.
    • Jordan Henry singles on a ground ball to first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez.
    • Kyle Bellows grounds into double play, shortstop Vladimir Frias to second baseman Oscar Tejeda to first baseman Reynaldo Rodriguez. Jordan Henry out at 2nd.

He was obviously overmatched in Portland , but hopefully going down to Salem and getting it right will really help him develop as a player. The Sox have always said they don't mind it if their prospects take a few lumps and experience adversity that way they can gauge how they handle pressure/failure and how well they come back from it. Not saying the sox wanted Stolmy to get hammered in AA, but hopefully in the long run he looks back on this and says that it was for the best..... I remember Daniel Bard's first couple years as a prospect.

Good to hear. He hit 97 last year, but was very ineffective up there. Which was he throwing more: the slider or the cutter?
