Season - 6-3 58.33 68 15 52 1 25 13 2.01

Neither the weather nor Asheville could do anything to cool off Pimentel’s hot streak, as he pitched 5 solid innings and allowed 1 ER to pick up the 5-1 rain-shortened victory on the road. He gave up 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6.

Quick Hits:

  • All 6 strikeouts were swinging
  • Of the 3 hits, 1 was for extra bases, a two-out double in the third; the runner would score the lone Asheville run when the following batter singled him home. No other Asheville baserunner advanced past second.
  • In 6 appearances since his “vacation” (1 relief, 5 starts) Pimentel has gone 5-1, throwing 29.33 innings with a 1.84 ERA, 33 K, 7BB and 1 HBP. In that span, batters are hitting .234/.284/.299 against him.
  • In his last 5 appearances (all starts), he has gone 5-0, throwing 26.33 innings with a 2.05 ERA, 28 K, 6 BB and 1 HBP. In those 5 starts, batters are hitting .220/.273/.286 against him.

I know the pitching prospect list is kind of redonkulous for the Sox at the moment but this kid needs more love.
Child of the 90s, in full season ball and frankly killing it. 2.03 ERA and nearly a k/IP.

Plus the coolest name in many a year. I want love people come on.

In June 4 starts 21 IP 24K 5 BB 3 ER WHIP 1.0 (ish) 1.27 ERA

P.S Greenville: Hagadone (replacing Kelly!), Fife, Stolmy, Strickland, Price, Huntzinger (pen with Clay, Zerpa, Lee, Ventura, McClain)
That really isn't a shoddy pitching staff

I love him - and the name!! He's a real good prospect, as are a lot of Sox minor league SPs. I'm just not sure any of them, including Stolmy, are top of the rotation guys save for maybe Buchholz and Hagadone (and we don't know about Hagadone's comeback from surgery or whether he's even a SP). But Stolmy does have a chance to be special.

I'm as big a Stolmy fan as the next guy, but Casey Kelly says hi. He is all of 4 months older, and his numbers in the SAL make Stolmy's look pedestrian. In fact, I'll take Kelly's numbers at Salem over Pimentel's in Greenville in cocaine heartbeat. Kelly is the second best pitching prospect in the system behind Buchholz (yes, I know Buch has lost his eligibility), and it's not particularly close.

Pimentel’s recent run of dominance hit a speed bump on Thursday, as he went 5 innings allowing 6 hits and 3 ER while striking out 3 and walking 1; he did not factor in the decision in Greenville’s 5-4 loss at Asheville.

Quick Hits:

  • This marked Pimentel’s third consecutive start and fifth overall against Asheville; he has faced no other team more than twice.
  • All 3 strikeouts were swinging.
  • Of the 6 hits, 2 were for extra bases: a 2-run HR in the first (just the second HR Pimentel has allowed all season) and a leadoff double in the third who would score following a sacrifice bunt and a sac fly.
  • Two Asheville runners were thrown out at home. One tried to score from second on a single to CF and was thrown out by Dening. The other tried to score from second on a fielding error by Dent at 2B; there were 2 outs so the runner was going on contact, but Dent recovered from his error in time to throw him out at home.
  • Since his last loss on 5/21 Pimentel has made 6 starts and gone 5-0, throwing 31.33 innings with a 2.59 ERA, 31 K, 7 BB, and 1 HBP. In that span batters are hitting .239/.286/.330 against him.

For the second straight start Pimentel was hit hard, going 5 innings and allowing 8 hits and 5 ER; on the plus side he struck out 7 with no walks. He still picked up the win as Greenville’s offense exploded early on its way to a 10-5 road victory.

Quick Hits:

  • Pimentel has now won his last 6 decisions since taking the loss in relief on 5/21; his last loss as a starter came on 4/25.
  • Of the 7 strikeouts, 5 were swinging and 2 were called. The 7 strikeouts tie his season high, set on 6/12 at home against Asheville.
  • Of the 8 hits, 2 went for extra bases: a one-out RBI double in the second inning in which Pimentel allowed 5 hits and 3 ER; and a two-out, two run HR in the fifth (his third allowed on the season and second in as many games).
  • Since his last loss on 5/21, Pimentel has made 7 starts and gone 6-0, throwing 36.33 innings with a 3.47 ERA, 38 K, 7 BB and 1 HBP. In that span, batters are hitting .258/.296/.364 against him.

Pimentel was placed on the 7-day DL on 7/4/09; he has a case of the dreaded "left calf strain" that's been running rampant through the Sox minor league system. Much like his paper vacation in Lowell in early May, it's presumed that this DL-stint is simply a way to keep him fresh for the whole season while keeping his innings limited and at the same time freeing up innings for the logjam of other Greenville SP prospects.

Pimentel turned in a solid but unspectacular outing on Thursday to continue his unbeaten streak, going 5 innings and allowing 3 ER to pick up the win at Hagerstown. He struck out 5 and walked 1; he also hit a batter and threw a wild pitch.

Quick Hits:

  • Pimentel has now won his last 8 decisions since taking the loss in relief on 5/21; his last loss as a starter came on 4/25.
  • Of the 5 strikeouts, 2 were swinging and 3 were called.

Season - 9-5 89.67 102 19 84 8 43 31 3.11

Pimentel’s recent penchant for giving up the long ball continued on Monday in a 3-1 loss to Lakewood, contributing to his shortest outing since 4/15 and his second shortest of the season. He went just 4.33 innings allowing 3 ER, striking out 5 and walking 2; he also threw a wild pitch.

Quick Hits:

  • Of the 5 strikeouts, 4 were swinging and 1 was called.
  • Of the 4 hits, 2 went for extra bases: a leadoff HR in the second and a two-out, two-run HR in the third.
  • The HRs accounted for all of Pimentel’s runs allowed. This was the second consecutive start in which he gave up multiple HRs after not having done so in any of his previous starts. He has now given up 4 HRs in his last 2 starts (10.33 IP), 5 HRs in his last 3 starts (15.33 IP) and 7 in his last 6 starts (31.33 IP).
  • This marks the first time Pimentel’s season ERA has been above 3 since it was 3.24 after his second start of the season on 4/15
  • Since the SAL All-Star break, Pimentel has made 6 starts, throwing 31.33 innings with a 5.17 ERA, 32 K, 4 BB and 1 HBP. In that span he has allowed 34 hits, 13 for extra bases (of which 7 were HRs); opposing batters are hitting .272/.298/.488 against him. There are good signs in this recent rough patch: he’s not walking anyone and he’s striking out better than a batter per inning (BB/9 of 1.15, K/9 of 9.19, K/BB of 8.00). The downside is that when he’s getting hit, he’s getting hit hard (38.24 XBH%, 7 HR in 132 BF). Some of this is simply a natural correction of his HR/FB rate, as he had only given up 1 HR in 250 BF pre-ASB; however he has also seen a rise in his FB rate overall (1.00 GO/AO pre-ASB, .62 GO/AO post-ASB which warrants watching.

Pimentel’s losing streak continued on Saturday despite a solid performance. He threw 5 innings in a 7-3 loss at Augusta, allowing 5 hits and 2 ER while walking 1 and striking out 3.

Quick hits:

  • Of the 3 strikeouts, 2 were swinging and 1 was called.
  • Of the 5 hits, 2 went for extra bases: a one-out triple in the second that ended up being harmless and a one-out RBI double in the third.
  • Since the SAL All-Star Break, Pimentel has made 7 starts, throwing 36.33 innings with a 4.95 ERA, 35 K, 5 BB and 1 HBP. In that span he has allowed 39 hits, 15 for extra bases (7 doubles, 1 triple, 7 HRs); opposing batters are hitting .271/.298/.479 against him.

Season - 9-6 99.67 110 21 91 10 48 36 3.25

Pimentel returned to his recent run of unspectacular starts, going 5 innings and allowing 3 hits and 3 ER, walking 1 while striking out 4. He left with a 4-3 lead but ended up with a no-decision in the eventual 10-5 loss to Lexington.

Quick Hits:

  • Of the 4 strikeouts, 1 was swinging and 3 were called
  • Of the 3 hits, 2 were for extra bases: a two-out HR in the second and a one-out, two-run HR in the fourth.
  • The HRs accounted for all of Pimentel’s runs allowed. This is the third start this season in which he has allowed multiple HRs, all of them coming in his last four outings. He has now allowed 6 HRs in his last 4 starts (20.33 IP, 81 BF), 7 HRs in his last 5 starts (25.33 IP, 103 BF), and 9 HRs in his last 8 starts (41.33 IP, 170 BF). The start of this 8 start stretch coincides with his first start following the SAL All-Star Break.
  • In 8 starts since the SAL ASB, Pimentel has thrown 41.33 IP with a 5.01 ERA, 39 K, 6 BB, and 1 HBP. In that span he has allowed 42 hits, 17 for extra bases (7 doubles, 1 triple, 9 HRs); opposing batters are hitting .261/.290/.484 against him post-ASB.
  • While his post-ASB results have been uninspiring, his peripherals outside of HR/9 have been solid: 9.15 H/9, 1.31 BB/9, 8.49 K/9; all of which are marked improvements over his pre-ASB numbers. His post-ASB HR/9 is 1.96 compared to 0.15 pre-ASB. This correction in HR rate combined with an uptick in FB rate is in large part driving his poor results. Hopefully soon his HR rate will stabilize somewhere around his season number of 0.90 HR/9 and he can put together a stretch of strong peripherals and good results.

Coming off a 9 day layoff, Pimentel turned in a very good performance on Sunday, going 6 innings and allowing 1 ER on 5 hits while striking out 1 and walking 1. He ended up with a no-decision in Greenville’s 4-3 walk-off win over Greensboro.

Quick Hits:

  • The strikeout was swinging
  • Of the 5 hits, 2 went for extra bases: a one-out, one-on double in the second inning in which he was helped when the runner trying to score from first was thrown out at the plate Hissey-to-Kelly-to-Thomas; and a two-out double in the fourth which was harmless
  • This marked the first time Pimentel allowed fewer than 2 runs since he allowed 1 on 7/11 (6 starts). This also marked the first time Pimentel struck out fewer than 2 batters since he struck out 0 in his second start of the season on 4/15.
  • In 9 starts since the SAL ASB, Pimentel has thrown 47.33 IP with a 4.56 ERA, 40 K, 7 BB, and 1 HBP. In that span he has allowed 47 hits, 19 for extra bases (9 doubles, 1 triple, 9 HRs); opposing batters are hitting .261/.289/.472 against him post-ASB.

I've got a couple of questions about Stolmy's age and the predictive value of his peripherals. Now Stolmy's only a year older than me so I imagine he still has plenty of room to fill out his frame and rack up more strikeouts, or start throwing a cutter 60% of the time, Bannister-style, but how much does it hurt his chances of being a average or above average major league starter that he isn't striking out more than 9 per 9 and has a GO/AO below 1 in intermediate A ball?

I suppose what I'm really trying to judge here is how much I can gather about a prospect's status from peripherals alone. For example, how much of Stolmy's GB% is his pitching coach making him focus on fastball command and how much of it is something else that is going to be with him till he's a major leaguer? I suppose we can't necessarily know that, but it's interesting nonetheless.

I'm far from an expert in prospect projection so take my opinion with the requisite amount of salt, but a 19-year old in Low-A is so far away from being a finished product that it's near impossible to predict major league effectiveness from his stats; at this point in his career projection is based far more on tools rather than results. Obviously if he was flat out dominating hitters it would increase the odds that he’d be an above-average major leaguer, but it would still be a long shot just based on how far away he is. As you've noted, we can’t definitively state whether his results are affected by coaches telling him to focus on developmental goals and thus might not reflect his best possible performance. In addition, one need look no further than Lester and Buchholz to see that even dominance in the minors only matters so much as a pitcher continues to develop at the Major League level. All in all I don't think you can make anything more than a best guess at how a AAA prospect will translate to the majors, much less players in their first year of full-season ball; however, just throwing up our hands and saying "Who knows if he'll make it, we'll find out when it happens" takes the fun out of following the farm system. I’m very encouraged by the scouting reports of his offspeed pitches and his advanced control for his age (2.01 BB/9, 3.92 K/BB), and in terms of overall results he’s held his own.

As far as the strikeouts go, it's cherry picking slightly but Pimentel's season breaks down as follows: his first two outings he pitched 8.33 innings and struck out 1; he followed that up with a stretch of 90 Ks in 91.33 IP; and in his last two outings which have each come on 7+ days rest he's pitched 8 innings and struck out 3. So for the majority of his season he's been striking guys out at very close to a batter per inning. Even with his current 7.86 K/9 being under that mark who knows how much velocity, if any, his fastball will pick up as he gets older and how that will affect his ability to strike guys out. From all the scouting reports I've read he has two above-average, plus-potential offspeed offerings in his curve and changeup as well as good control and command, so if the fastball velocity gets a bump I'd expect his K numbers to increase.

Pimentel started off the postseason in strong fashion on Thursday, turning in a strong 6 inning, 5 hit, 2 R (1 ER) performance despite not factoring in the decision in Greenville’s eventual 3-2 win. He also struck out 4 and did not walk anyone.

  • Of the 4 strikeouts, 3 were swinging and 1 was called.
  • Of the 5 hits, 2 went for extra bases (a harmless double in the third and a 1-out, RBI double in the fifth that accounted for all of Asheville’s runs).
  • The fifth inning was the only one in which Pimentel ran into trouble, and it was amplified by some poor defense:

Pimentel was included today in Jonathan Mayo's write-up of "Red Sox's 10 prospects to watch in 2010" for MLB.com

QUOTE (Jonathan Mayo)
Stolmy Pimentel, RHP: After impressing as an 18-year-old making his U.S. debut in the short-season New York-Penn League, Pimentel did nearly as well when he gave full-season ball a try at 19. He won 10 games and finished with a 3.82 ERA. Over 117 2/3 IP, the right-hander walked only 29 and struck out 103. He ran out of gas a little bit near the end of the season, but that's not surprising for a young pitcher's first full year. He'll move up to Class A Advanced Salem this season.

Pimentel survived a rocky first inning in his first home start of the season and rode a strong offensive performance to pick up the win in Salem’s 9-3 victory over Myrtle Beach on Sunday. Pimentel pitched 5 innings, allowing 2 ER on 4 hits (2 HR) and 2 walks while striking out 2.

Quick Hits:

  • Of the 4 hits, 2 went for extra bases: back-to-back solo HRs with 2 outs in the first inning. The damage could have been worse, as the first batter of the inning walked and was subsequently picked off first base by catcher William Vazquez before the HRs. After the second HR, Pimentel walked the next batter prompting a mound visit from the pitching coach. He then induced a flyout to LF to end the inning and allowed just 2 singles (one erased by a double play) in his final 4 innings of work; no runners advanced past first base in those last 4 innings.

Pimentel put together by far the best outing of his young professional career on Saturday, spinning 6 perfect innings while striking out 4 in Salem’s 9-1 victory at Myrtle Beach. He was replaced in the seventh due to pitch count. From the MiLB.com writeup:

QUOTE (Daren Smith @ MLB.com)
Everything fell into place for Stolmy Pimentel on Saturday night.

The 20-year-old right-hander pitched six perfect innings, striking out four, as the Salem Red Sox coasted to a 9-1 romp over the punchless Myrtle Beach Pelicans.

"All my pitches were working tonight -- fastball, changeup, curveball," Pimentel said after the most impressive outing of his four-year career.

The Pelicans came close to a hit just once against the native of the Dominican Republic, but Alex Hassan made a sliding catch of Yoel Campusano's fly ball to right field leading off the sixth inning.

Quick Hits:

  • Of the 4 strikeouts, 2 were swinging and 2 were called.
  • In 5 road starts this season, Pimentel is 3-0 with a 1.23 ERA, an 18/3 K/BB, and a .177/.217/.228 opposing line. Conversely in 3 home starts, he is 1-2 with a 9.23 ERA, a 6/8 K/BB and a .377/.476/.585 opposing line. SSS splits are non-predictive, but fun.

  • It looks like Pimentel simply ran out of gas in the sixth. His line through 5 innings was stellar: 5 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K. Pimentel had another superb outing on Thursday, going 6 no-hit innings against Winston-Salem while striking out 6; the only batter to reach base against him was a two-out walk in the fifth. The performance was even more impressive given the fact that Winston-Salem is by far the best offensive team in the Carolina League this season with a team OPS of .826 (Salem is second at .745). He did not factor in the decision in Salem’s 2-1 victory after leaving with a 1-0 lead.

From the MiLB.com writeup:

QUOTE (Danny Wild @ MLB.com)
Stolmy Pimentel can't be perfect every night.

But he came as close as he could Thursday, with his second no-hit six-inning stint of the season en route to Class A Advanced Salem's 2-1 win over Winston Salem.

"I would like to throw a no-hitter every time I pitch," he said. "But I'm happy to just pitch good."

A week after tossing six perfect frames against Myrtle Beach, the right-handed Red Sox prospect struck out six and walked one in matching his season high of six innings.

"I felt very good, I was working the off-speed pitches and I was down in the zone, throwing strikes," said Pimentel. "I felt very good, and I had a combination with my catcher, Ryan Lavarnway."

Pimentel induced nine grounders, three fly balls and lowered his ERA to 3.72 for the Red Sox in his 10th start.

Jason Bour worked a two-out walk in the fifth inning and was the only batter to reach base off Pimentel, considered one of Boston's top pitching prospects since his debut in 2007.

Quick Hits:

  • Of the 6 strikeouts, 4 were swinging and 2 were called. Pimentel struck out the last two batters that he faced, looking and swinging respectively, to put an exclamation point on his outing.
  • Pimentel’s last three starts: 17.33 IP, 5 H (only 1 XBH), 4 BB, 15 K, 3 ER. To cherry-pick further, outside of the last 5 batters he faced in his 5/21 start: 17 IP, 2 H, 3 BB, 15 K, 0 ER.

  • Of the 10 hits, only 1 went for extra bases: a 1-out, 2 RBI triple in the third that ended Pimentel’s outing (the runner would eventually score).

Pimentel put together another decent outing on Tuesday, but the offense was dormant and the bullpen struggled as Salem fell to Myrtle Beach 7-1. Pimentel pitched 5.67 innings allowing 3 runs (3 ER) on 5 hits (1 HR) while walking 3 and striking out 1.

Quick Hits:

  • The strikeout was swinging.

Pimentel made a solid, albeit brief, appearance in the All-Star Futures Game on Sunday, retiring both batters he faced. Some observations from the gamethread:

Pimentel pitches 2/3 IP. Gets (Logan) Morrison to fly to center and (Danny) Espinosa to ground out to 2nd. 10 pitches, 5 strikes.

A brief appearance by Stolmy. He gave up a long drive to left center that was caught by the center fielder on a nice play at the wall. He then broke a bat on a soft ground out to second. His stuff looked pretty sharp. Decent depth on one curve ball off the inside of the plate. The broken bat looked like it came on a heavy two seamer at 89mph. I wish I could have seen more.

Seriously, 2 outs. I waited to see Pimentel get 2 outs.

Well one guy put a charge into a low and away fastball that wasn't a bad pitch and the CF made a nice catch at the wall.

The other out was a shatter bat dribbler to 2b

He looked relaxed out there. He threw one hard hooking curveball that missed inside. I found it interesting that he was looking up and away a couple of times to get strikes, one time getting it.

Pimentel had his longest outing of the season on Friday, but did not factor into the decision in Salem’s 7-6 extra inning win over Winston-Salem. Pimentel pitched 7.00 innings allowing 3 runs (2 ER) on 3 hits while walking 2 and striking out 6.

Quick Hits:

  • All 6 strikeouts were swinging.
  • Of the 3 hits, only 1 went for extra bases: a 1-out double in the fifth with a man on first; the lead-runner would go on to score on a sacrifice fly before Pimentel got a strikeout to end the inning with runners on second and third. That strikeout started a string of 7 straight batters retired to end his outing.
  • Gamelog and full boxscore.
