OPENING DAY

07 stats
Offense: Pitching:

DET 5.48 5.44 road 110 .287 .345 .458 352 177 4.92 4.69 road 100 3.5 6.5 174 4.37

AL 4.90 .271 .338 .423 4.90 3.3 6.5
edit: that whole home/road thing.

The most feared lineup in baseball this season has pounded out 15 runs ... so far. At home. Against the Royals and White Sox. At least their pitching is dead last in Runs allowed. They've been giving up hits and walking the park as well. So let's keep our fingers crossed for the expected reversion to the mean for Ordonez and Polanco, while age catches up with Sheffield, Rodriguez and Renteria.

We also get to see 2 LHP's start. The Gambler is not a big fan of Fenway (5.48 career ERA); neither is Bonderman (7.56 ERA in 3 starts). They both have healthy splits, so I have to believe we'll see an extra RHB in the lineup in the form of Coco.

What do the home offense and pitching for the Sox and away offense and pitching for the Tigers look like?

We won't see him this weekend, but one of the Tigers' top pitching prospects is a 6'5" lefty from Portland, Maine. He also spent a couple of kick-ass summers in the Cape League and has the most awesome name in all of baseball:

Charlie Furbush

(Yeah, this is a Jason Stark-esque hijack, but it simply had to be done.)

Has anyone seen anything about the Thursday game being moved to 5:30 to facilite getaway plans for the two teams? It's being INSISTED to me that it was on WEEI this morning, but I cannot find any online indication whatsoever that this is true.

BONDERMAN

Interesting when I looked at the 08 forecasts on fangraphs.com, they are universally forecasting a return to his '06 ERA in the low 4's. I guess they like 25 year old pitchers, but since he was shut down last season after Sept 9 with a bad elbow, I guess I'd be reluctant to give him the benefit of the doubt. In his first start vs. KC, he didn't fool anyone, giving up 8 hits, 2 HR and 2 BB while only striking out 1. Tiggers fans are excited because he has good career numbers vs Papi, Tek Youks, Crisp, Lowell.

The concern for Lester has to be that this is a team that hit LHP pretty well last year (.292/.352/.477).

The good news:
-he's pitched pretty well at Fenway over his career (4.60 ERA vs 4.57 away),
-and he actually has a little reverse split going, although for only 157 PA vs. LHB:
RHB: .267/.360/.392
LHB: .299/.363/.511
-and DET doesn't like to walk (3rd last in BB in 07)

Yeah, it's safe to say this is not his favorite team to face. Lots of HR usually in this matchup (although he did win the game when he gave up 6!):

ROBERTSON - another LHP. Let's hope the trend of Lefty=Loser in this series continues.

Robertson took 3 weeks off in June last year for a "tired arm", after not getting an out in a start in Texas (where he gave up a Grand Slam to the 5th batter).

Pretty meaningful LH/RH split, and is usually very tough the first time through the lineup.
