For whatever it's worth, here's how I could see the rest of the offseason playing out, and there's an offer sheet included (so bear with me).

1. Bruins trade Ference and Kobasew in different deals for 6th and 2nd round picks respectively. If Dominic Moore gets a 2nd at the deadline, I'm sure Kobasew could get one with his contract status. This clears $3,733,333.33, giving the Bruins a grand total of $5,069,567.00 in cap space.

2. Re-sign Kessel to a two year deal with an AAV of $3.4m, giving him $3.2m in the first year and $3.6m in the second year. This leaves $1,669,567.00 in cap space

3. Sign Hurricanes' D Anton Babchuk ($1m QO that has gone unsigned and, if signed, would put Carolina over the cap) to a one year, $1.4m offer sheet. Carolina gladly receives their second round pick, which is about what they'd get for Babchuk in a trade. If they choose to match the offer sheet, they can't trade Babchuk for a year and, as such, would be stuck with a player for whom Rutherford is known to hold great contempt for refusing to report to the AHL and bolting in '06-'07.

We ice the following lineup:

Lucic - Savard - Kessel
Sturm - Bergeron - Recchi
Wheeler - Krejci - Ryder
Thornton - Begin - Bitz

Chara - Morris
Stuart - Wideman
Hunwick - Babchuk
Boychuk

Thomas
Rask

Total AAV: $56,530,833

This would make this off season about as successful as it could possibly be, especially if the Canes took the B's original 2nd rounder leaving us with Tampa's 2nd rounder from the Recchi trade.

Good ideas PSK. I don't think it happens. I think zero RFAs sign offera this year. Call it collusion or whatever. Even Babchuk, who's a good player but not wanted in Carolina.

With all the Kessel talk, I figured I'd take a look at next offseason, as this one seems to be all wrapped up short of signing Kessel at $4m, trading Ference and Kobasew, and offer sheeting Babchuk. Obviously.

What this all means:

Our cap hit going into next offseason, assuming no trades as of now (I know) and assuming Kessel signs in the $4m neighborhood with Kobasew gone, is shaping up to be $39,279,166.67. It gives us the following lineup:

Sturm - Krejci - Kessel
XX - Bergeron - Ryder
XX - Sobotka* - XX
XX - XX - Bitz

Chara - XX
Hunwick - Wideman
XX - XX

Thomas
XX

Assuming a cap drop of ~$1.5m, that gives us a cap of $55.3m, giving us $16,020,833.33 in space to sign the following players:

Savard (UFA)
Morris (UFA)
Stuart (RFA, Arbitration Eligible)
Ference (UFA)
Recchi (UFA)
Wheeler (RFA)
Rask (RFA)
Begin (UFA)
Sobotka (RFA)
Lucic (RFA)
McQuaid (RFA)
Thornton (UFA)
Lehtonen (RFA)

Additionally, Hamill may be ready to step in in a 3rd line role at an $816,666.67 cap hit.

I think we all know Savard's departure is all but a foregone conclusion, ditto Morris, Recchi, Begin, and possibly Thornton.

RFA estimations:
Stuart - $2.3m AAV
Wheeler - anywhere from $2m-4m. Let's say $3.3m to be on the safe side.
Rask - $1.1m AAV
Lucic - $3.6m AAV (a bit above Byfuglien)
Sobotka - $950,000 AAV
McQuaid - $500,000 1-way much like Boychuk.
Lehtonen - $650,000 1-way

So far, this has eaten up $13,216,666.67 of our $16,020,833.33 in cap space, leaving us with $2,804,166.67 and the following lineup:

Lucic - Bergeron - Kessel
Wheeler - Krejci - Ryder
Sturm - Hamill - XX
XX - Sobotka - Bitz

Chara - XX
Stuart - Wideman
Hunwick - McQuaid

Thomas
Rask

So for ~$2.8m we'll have to fill out 3-4 roster spots. Personally, I believe all of Hamill, Marchand, Lehtonen, and Sobotka will make it, with Jeff Penner perhaps given a shot at the 7th defenseman's role much like Boychuk's being given right now. Assuming Marchand's called up, I think he plays 4th line LW and alternates sitting with Sobotka/Lehtonen.

Thornton probably re-signs for a couple more years at, say, $750,000 AAV. Marchand's cap hit is only $556,666.67. Penner's is $1,020,833.33. Adding these guys in, we have $476,666.67 in cap space and the following lineup:

Lucic - Bergeron - Kessel
Wheeler - Krejci - Ryder
Sturm - Hamill - Lehtonen
Thornton - Sobotka - Bitz
Marchand

Chara - Wideman
Stuart - McQuaid
Hunwick - XX/UFA
Penner

Thomas
Rask

Pretty tight to the cap with a space to fill, and that's with a relatively conservative ($1.5m) estimate of the cap dropping and no bonuses taken into account. I think next offseason is where Chiarelli will have to make some really tough decisions. Waiving Sturm looks like it may be one of them if he has a campaign more like 2006-2007 than 2007-2008.

Super quick update: Seems like the book may be closed on the offseason, Bruins likely to go into the season icing the following lineup:

Projected Forwards
LW C RW
Lucic Savard Wheeler
Sturm Bergeron Recchi
Kobasew Sobotka/Hamill Ryder
Thornton Begin Bitz

Projected Defensemen
LD RD
Chara Morris
Stuart Wideman
Ference Hunwick

Projected Goaltenders
G
Thomas
Rask

With Sobotka up, we have $710,833.67 in cap space. With Hamill up, we have $519,167. I do, however, think it's safe to say Sobotka (or even Marchand) gets the call.

Wow, that is virtually zero cap room to start the season.
They better hope no players get nicked up since they won't even be able to really carry any healthy scratches with that much cap space. Looks like they will have to do something before starting the season.

PSK, what's the deal with bonus cushion? Right now NHL Numbers has Rask counting for 3.2 mill against the cap. Is this going to hold? If not, what does he end up counting for?

NHL Numbers is wrong, I like to use Capgeek. The bonus cushion basically takes all bonuses reached by Rask, Wheeler, Lucic, Sobotka, Recchi, etc. this season and counts them towards next year's cap. We should probably look for about $2.5m added, when all's said and done.

Ok, so when I generate a roster on Capgeek that includes Boychuk, Marchand, Rask, and Sobotka, it says they are just over a mill above the cap. Yet that includes the 5.655 mill in bonuses for the players you mentioned. Color me confused how it all breaks down, as the bonus structures really seem to mess with it.

Their numbers on Wideman's contract is wrong - they have it as a $3,937,500 AAV when it's really $3,875,000.

Manually adding the following roster's AAV:

Lucic - Savard - Wheeler
Sturm - Bergeron - Ryder
Recchi - Hamill - Kobasew
Thornton - Begin - Bitz
Krejci (hurt)

Chara - Morris
Stuart - Wideman
Ference - Hunwick
Boychuk

Thomas
Rask

I get an AAV of $56,047,500, leaving room to add a player at the start of the season like Marchand at a $556,666.67 cap hit to bring the total cap hit to $56,604,166.67. If Sobotka makes the squad over Marchand, it's $56,662,500.

If true, this is awesome news.

QUOTE
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman last night called dire predictions of a dramatic decrease in the NHL's salary cap next season "absurd."

"Over the last few months, there's been a lot of speculation that the cap's going to go down 20 percent. That's absurd. That's just made-up. It isn't going to happen," Bettman said. "I think it will be somewhere near where it is ($56.8 million), up a little, down a little, somewhere near where it is."

The computer that has my cap stuff is dead for now, but going on MS Calculator the Bruins are in the following cap situation:

Cap Dollars Used: $4,832,907.57
Cap Dollars Remaining: $51,967,092.43

Cap Space Used: 8.508%
Days Gone: 19/194 = 9.794% of season

Prorating with Lucic on the team, Lefebvre in Providence until the trade deadline, we will have $35,313,706.54 used by the deadline, with the cap limit in dollars used by the deadline standing at $38,940,206.19. This means we have $3,626,499.65 in unused cap dollars at the deadline, meaning we will have the cap room to add a player making $11,533,457.89 for the final 61 days of the season to fill out our cap limit. Basically, we can name our impending UFA(s).

Note that, unless we add a player that would put us over the cap were Lucic on the roster, Lucic's time on LTIR has no bearing on our cap space whatsoever.

edit: And with Lefebvre being demoted as of a few minutes ago, that bumps the number up about another $225,000 assuming he'd have been on the club another month.

Yes. That LTIR exemption is a lot less useful than I had thought in the past. We'd have to bring in a player (or players) now who makes more than the available cap space to benefit, and then when Lucic came back guys would have to be moved off the cap in order to activate him.

Probably just roster space. With Savard and Thornton out of practice yesterday and Bitz and Lucic having injury concerns, they probably needed Lefebvre there as a body. Also, there's a 23 man roster limit I believe, which they were at if they'd decided not to LTIR Lucic.

Also, if a deal comes along for a player like Frolov that puts them a few bucks over the cap, it's good to have Lucic on LTIR until they can decide who to demote/waive.

Just want to say thanks for the effort you've put and continue to put into this. It's a remarkable piece of work.

Many thanks, it's not a huge undertaking now that I've got the formulas down. The only thing to note is that the projected cap dollars spent at the deadline (and subsequent maximum post-deadline allowable cap hit) is artificially low due to Whitfield and Wozniewski being up. Once they get sent back down and Stuart returns, it'll be back to around the Dec 15 level of what we can expect the Bruins' cap space to be at the deadline.

Gonna update it for Whitfield/Larman being returned to Providence, and a more realistic post-deadline cap outlook.

Something that's bothered me is the lack of information on bonus dollars, so I'm going to try and estimate where the Bruins stand as far as cap space and the bonus cushion going into next year. Here's an update:

Trade Deadline Watch - Day #155
Update Current Cap Cushion
30-Nov 361,135.61
9-Dec 450,630.43
15-Dec 510,293.64
23-Dec 543,281.55
14-Jan 641,770.33
18-Jan 635,069.12
25-Jan 653,778.10
28-Jan 658,894.68
2-Feb 679,633.02
4-Feb 686,843.73
2-Mar 823,968.08
4-Mar 845,604.52
19-Mar 1,048,713.33

With this cap hit the rest of the way ($54,400,000) the Bruins are on pace to have $1,347,158.93 in cap cushion at the end of the season. Here's a look at bonuses on the roster - my methodology is explained below:

I took the baseline of 25% of bonuses reached, as none of these players were playing well enough to activate anywhere near all of their bonuses outside of Rask (50%, would be higher if he played more as bonuses are based mostly on counting stats). Since the bonuses are mostly activated by counting stats, I'm further multiplying these figures by the percentage of the regular season that each player played.

Projected cap cushion for '09-'10: $1,347,158.93 - $1,337,525.25 = $9,633.68

This explains why Morris had to be moved out for pennies on the dollar to make room for Seidenberg's contract. We should be alright as far as the cap goes next year - I'm thinking somewhere around $57m.

The cap situation is correctable, as I explained in my post. I don't understand or agree with the Ference signing, but it's also not the end of the world either.

Taken from the Ference thread, this is right on.

Lucic - Savard - Wheeler
Sturm - Bergeron - Marchand
Paille - Krejci - Ryder
XX - Sobotka - XX

Chara - Seidenberg
Stuart - Wideman
Ference - Boychuk
Hunwick

Thomas
Rask

We'd be about $300,000 over the cap with the current situation while lacking two forwards. Trading Hunwick is an easy way to assuage this, leaving $1.1m in cap space. Another way is to buy out Ryder, giving us a total of around $3,819,523.81 if the cap remains at $56.8m. If McQuaid re-signs for $500,000 and one-way (like Boychuk this year), that's $3,319,523.81 remaining for three forwards. The Pick and Caron will fill two of these spots, accounting for around $1.8m of this space before bonuses (with Chara and Bergeron off the books after next year, I feel like Chiarelli won't care about going over the cap with bonuses), leaving $1,519,523.81 for a fourth liner (Boogaard?) and shuttle space. It's doable, for sure - though Ference doesn't help one bit.

Lucic - Savard - Hall/Seguin
Sturm - Bergeron - Marchand
Wheeler - Krejci - Caron
Paille - Sobotka - Boogaard
XX

Chara - Seidenberg
Stuart - Wideman
Ference - Boychuk
McQuaid

Rask

Quick CBA related question PSK. If the Bruins sent Ryder to Providence for next season instead of buying him out, they would be able to use the whole $4 million in cap space, instead of carrying a $1.33 million hit for the next two seasons correct? Maybe we'd even get lucky and someone would take him off of waivers. Also, could he be called up on "emergency basis" due to an injury without requiring re-entry waivers?

Yes Ryder could in theory be sent to Providence but Jacobs will never let that happen otherwise Schaeffer would never have been bought out this season.

Not sure about the "emergency" call up part but I'm fairly certain he would be required to go through re-entry waivers. Again it has about a .5% chance of coming to fruition.

PSK, doesn't the CBA treat bonus $$ differently in the off-season or am I confusing it with something else? I know teams can go over the cap by up to 10% during the off-season but I thought bonuses were included during this time.

Yeah, the B's would have all $4m in cap space - much more preferable than a buyout, though we run the risk of needing him during the year and having him plucked off re-entry waivers. He would not be able to be recalled on an emergency basis, that would expose him to re-entry as far as I know. I don't think we'd bury him, $4m seems to be too much for Jacobs to stomach - seems like it was his motive to buyout Schaefer, unless Schaefer threatened to drown Chiarelli in coffee milk.

edit: Beaten to it.

As far as bonus money, with the soft cap, the bonus money is irrelevant until the season starts - though I think that issue will be revisited (for the third straight year) this summer.

According to the CBC, the salary cap will increase about $900,000 next season to $57.7m. Looks like all the doom and gloom was hogwash for the most part.

I don't buy Bettman's assertion that the cap will rise $2m due to the increased strength of the Canadian dollar, as since he made that quote the Loonie hasn't fared very well, and isn't far from its value from before this season. I'm glad that I was reasonably close on the Seidenberg extension as that gives the B's around $7-8m in cap space. Adding Sturm to the LTIR, I believe that $11m is a fair estimate for how much wiggle room Chiarelli really has remaining, between sending Marchand down and the cap going up more than I anticipate. Here's the lineup with $11m remaining.

Lucic - Savard - XX
XX - Krejci - Ryder
XX - Bergeron - Marchand
Thornton - XX - XX

Chara - Seidenberg
Hunwick - Wideman
Ference - XX

Rask
Thomas

- We can fill in Savard's wing with one of Seguin/Hall at a ~$900,000 cap hit. $10.1m in cap space remaining.
- Re-sign Recchi for $1m without bonuses, which (given his recent quotes) he would likely accept. $9.1m in cap space remaining.
- My RFA estimates are as follows: Wheeler: $2.1m, Stuart: $1.65m, Paille: $1.125m, Sobotka: $650,000 one-way. This adds up to $5.525m, leaving us $3,575,000 in cap space and this lineup:

Lucic - Savard - Hall/Seguin
Wheeler - Krejci - Ryder
Marchand - Bergeron - Recchi
Paille - Sobotka - Thornton

Chara - Seidenberg
Hunwick - Wideman
Ference - Stuart

Rask
Thomas

That room can be used to retain Boychuk and try to find a taker for Hunwick or Wideman, or simply to re-sign Boychuk and trade Stuart's RFA rights to get a pick. It's not unreasonable to think the Bruins could sign somebody like Frolov to play on Bergeron's LW until Sturm is healthy (which will be god knows when). In short, as much as Chiarelli may have botched the Thornton/Ference deals, there's still some wiggle room - as long as our bonuses from last year didn't spill over into this year's cap.

So, we have a ~$900,000 cap hit coming with Seguin's deal, giving us the following lineup assuming Savard stays:

Lucic - Savard - Horton
Wheeler - Krejci - Ryder
Recchi - Bergeron - Seguin
Paille - Campbell - Thornton
Marchand

Chara - Boychuk
Seidenberg - Hunwick
Stuart - Ference

Rask
Thomas

That leaves us $4.7m to sign Paille ($1.2), Stuart ($1.7), Wheeler ($2.2), and Campbell ($850,000) - clearly, we don't have the room for all of them, as those estimates put us $1.25m over the cap. It's beginning to look like Paille may not be brought back in favor of Marchand, as that would put us right at the cap with Stuart and Wheeler getting somewhat generous deals. Even if $400,000 is knocked off each deal, something's got to give.

EDIT: Forgot about Sturm on LTIR to start the year. So yeah, forget that last paragraph, we're fine to re-sign Paille, Campbell, Stuart, and Wheeler and still fit under the cap by about $1.5m, at least until Sturm returns.

Interesting tidbit from Fluto in this morning's piece regarding Recchi's bonus structure:

QUOTE
For every 10 regular-season games for which he dresses up to 70, Recchi will receive a $50,000 bonus, giving him a potential $350,000 total. Recchi will also receive $100,000 if the Bruins qualify for the playoffs, and another $100,000 if the Bruins reach the second round, provided he plays in at least half of the postseason games. Recchi could also earn $200,000 in scoring bonuses. Aside from youngsters on entry-level deals, only 35-or-older players on one-year deals like Recchi are eligible for bonuses.

I'm honestly surprised more deals like this aren't made with players, especially in the MLB where there's no worry about the salary cap and a team could protect themselves from players who are prone to injury, but still pay them as well as they deserve if things go right.

Agreed - considering how crippling these multi-year 35+ contracts are, teams should be having a higher base salary with playing time-activated bonuses; worst case is the guy stinks and you bench him, best case is he reaches his bonuses and doesn't hurt you on the cap for that year.

After the Stuart/Paille signings and accounting for the $1,759,795 cap penalty, the Bruins have $1,096,895.48 in cap space to retain Campbell, Wheeler, and sign Seguin's entry-level deal. Sturm going on LTIR will give them an extra $3,500,000 in space ($4,596,895.48) - and I think the end game will be Sturm getting waived after his rehab time is maxed out. Gives us plenty of room to retain Wheeler ($2.2) + Campbell ($.8) + Seguin ($.95 base) but no additional roster players. Perhaps McQuaid signs a $500,000 one-way deal a la Boychuk, with Hunwick filling in up front when they need him?

Lucic - Savard - Horton
Wheeler - Krejci - Ryder
Recchi - Bergeron - Seguin
Paille - Campbell - Thornton
(Hunwick)

Chara - Boychuk
Hunwick - Seidenberg
Stuart - Ference
McQuaid

Thomas
Rask

As an interesting aside, that roster would have Jacobs forking over $69,527,833 in salaries and bonuses if all bonuses are reached, counting the buyouts he's still paying to Eaves and Schaefer in real dollars.

Forgot to mention - with the proposed McQuaid one-way deal, our cap space would be $146,895.48

edit: Just realized those numbers include Marchand's $590,000 base salary, so there's your 13th forward. Well, I guess we can close the file on that one!

That doesn't account for the cap penalty though, does it? Don't the Bs still need to get below the cap when you include those bonus carry-overs from last season? I guess they could almost do that if they carried 20 guys for a while instead of keeping some scratches around (McQuaid, Marchand). It also looks like Seguin's base salary is included, so his bonuses will be pushed off til next season. If Seguin makes the team, that gives them 13 forwards including Thornton and Ryder. Something's gotta give.

I am accounting for the cap penalty - docked $1,759,795 from the $59.4m cap for the Maximum AAV figure of $57,640,205.

So someone else has to go period. There is no way you are getting through an entire season with 396K in cap space and only two extra bodies on the roster. Nevermind that under this scenario Sturm can't come back at all. I doubt he willingly stays in Providence if he is healthy. He is playing for his next contract.

Yes, but you can start the season like this... and then send someone to Providence when necessary. If someone gets hurt and doesn't go on LTIR, the Bruins would be in trouble... they'll have to put players that get hurt on LTIR whenever possible.

The Bruins could start the year with Ryder up and if he produces, release or trade Sturm when healthy. If he doesn't then send Ryder to Providence. Kind of works like when your 6th starter in baseball. Also, Sturm's game is speed but has had two major knee injuries; good Ryder will probably out produce him.
