Not interested in arguing, just in understanding the POV because it will directly affect the Bs cap situation. I think the reason the Bs had to dish out to get a guy like Ryder is exactly because goal scoring is the rarest commodity in hockey. What does any of this have to do with it being harder to find goal scorers than puck moving D? Give me something quantitative. What the Bs have done over the past several years that shows who or what they value isn't really convincing me of anything other than they are occasionally perplexing in their decision making. Maybe they will value the puck moving skills of their defensemen more than what Phil Kessel brings to the team. I have no clue. This is a club that has thrown ungodly amounts of money at guys who just aren't difference makers. Sturm (3.5), Ryder (4.0), Kobasew (2.3), Ward (2.75), and Stuart (1.3). Each defensible contracts in and of themselves (maybe not Ryder's) but all total that is almost $14M on a group of players you couldn't trade for any single one of those 7 guys that hit for 40 goals in 2 of the last 3 seasons.

And I wasn't saying those contracts are defensible. The Sturm signing was fine, Ward was OK. I didn't agree with the addition of Ryder or Kobasew because I just don't think they are worth what they are being paid.

Indeed it brings it down, forgot to delete him from off-cap. I don't really know why it's so important to Claude to have seven defensemen up - if someone gets hurt in warmups, slide Axelsson back to the 6th d/4th line forward spot and save some valuable cap space.

There is no way he gets that type of money as a RFA, doesn't signing a RFA to "near-max" money cost your team three or four 1st round picks? Anything over 2.5 mil is like a 1st and 3rd.

I expect a multiple year deal worth a few million a season.

I disagree (unless it's a truly awful team like Florida who makes the offer). Kessel's the best pure goalscoring talent this team's had in generations - we don't need the depth of a 25th-30th overall pick - it's the game-breaking talent that solidifies Kessel on the top line which makes it essential to keep him at this point. We don't need future Kobasews at this point; even at $6.5m (which is a bargain for a 40 goal-scorer), we really do have to keep Phil.

edit: Technically, Fluto's wrong here. Ference's $1,400,000 counts, but we get a $1.4m exception to the cap as well, pushing our ceiling to $58.1m for the amount of time he's on the LTIR. Basically, our cap space is now $56,700,000 plus $1.4m times (the amount of days Ference is on LTIR/186). If he's on for 50 days or so (as it looks like he will be), then our cap space increases by about $375,000. Nothing to sneeze at, especially around the deadline.

That makes sense, I wasn't sure how it worked. Where did you get such a working knowledge of the cap? Was there one place you read up on it, or just picked up stuff over time? I'd love to learn more about it, if possible (I had no idea how the LTIR was handled, as you can see).

So I was reading nhlscap.com (thanks for the links), and this was part of their note on the LTIR:

So - just because a player has a long-term injury does not automatically grant the team extra cap space. A team with a payroll of $44 million that has a player making $4 million get injured doesn't gain any extra cap space as a result; a team at $54 million and a player at $4 million only gains $1,300,000 (all pro-rated, of course). Relief toward the salary cap only comes if replacing an injured player's salary would push the team over the cap, and the amount of relief is limited to the amount the team would go over the cap - not the entire amount of the injured player's salary.

I'm not sure if I'm reading this right, so bear with me. Isn't that saying that the Bruins would only get relief if Ference's replacement took them over the hardcap? And if they did, they only get the relief of the amount they go over, up to Ference's prorated amount?

So since the Bruins replacements for Ference don't bring them above the cap, they don't get relief at all? They have that theoretical amount to work with if they want, but once he comes back, it disappears, correct?

There was a healthy dose of intended irony in there, of course. It was more a dig at how screwed up the Lightning are than a legitimate wish to trade Kessel for picks. I'll admit I'm not as up on the NHL draft as I am the other major sports, but if the worst team in pro hockey consistently draws the 25th-30th overall pick then no wonder the league is so screwed up.

Boyes signed a 4yr/16M contract in March 2007 during a season in which he ended up with 43 goals. I think that's the starting point, assuming Kessel stays healthy and keeps those shots on goal.

I don't know a single thing about Kessel's inclination to take a Pedroia-like discount, but I do hope they are talking with him and Krejci about staying on proactively. Seems like they have a good group of players here and in Kessel's case it probably helps that Wheeler is with the team and doing well. This is one area where Chiarelli has taken many leaps forward from the old regime.

Also, Vanek's career path is very similar to Kessel's, omitting Kessel's rookie year (not only because of Lewis, but also because Vanek's rookie year would've been the lockout, when he scored netted 42 goals and 26 assists in the AHL - had Kessel played in Providence that first year, I feel like his numbers would've been similar).

Boyes is a low starting point. No one in their right mind would take him over 21 year old Kessel. Kessel has superstar potential, Boyes doesn't and never did.

Agreed EJ. Boyes is now more of a floater than Kessel, and has racked up a flat out impressive -14 in 24 games whiles still scoring 6 even-strength goals and 10 even-strength points. Last year, Boyes was a +1 with 32 even-strength goals and 46 even-strength points. It's no secret - not even Michael Ryder had this (lack of) defensive reputation in the past. IMHO, Kessel will be evaluated in the RFA market much closer to Vanek than even to someone like Penner, which is bad news for us but great news for Phil.

Kessel could by looking at a Havlet/Stastny contract ($6-6.25m)

Is it more likely that the NHLPA and the owners pick up the option on the CBA or not? This cap stuff is greek to me. From what I understand the difference in the cap hits were some kind of poison pill to encourage both sides to pick up the CBA? It sounds like to me that the Bruins would be in goog shape if that option was picked up. Is it a one year option, and when does the CBA expire completely?

Can I ask for a clarification here? What's this deal with entry-level incentive bonuses and the cap? As I understand it guys like Kessel and Wheeler have giant cap hits due to nigh-unattainable performance bonuses, which seems kinda stupid. Has it been this way since the new CBA was signed? And how is it that such numbers would suddenly be reduced? What's this business re: "the option" on the CBA, I thought it was good through 2010/2011?

When the CBA was written, those were going to be soft cap hits, i.e. the bonuses would only count against the cap if they were achieved. They were written in as incentives for rookies to sign deals that could exceed the max entry-level deal. Teams were taking advantage of this (I guess?) by having a lot of these bonuses for young players, so for some reason they decided to make those a hard hit. It's almost a foregone conclusion that those will go back to being soft hits.

One striking difference from last season is the much smaller number of elite Group 2 free agents who do not have salary arbitration rights compared to a year ago at this time. Since these players cannot be taken to arbitration by their clubs, they are potentially open to receive an offer sheet all summer. Group 2 players with arbitration rights lose the ability to receive an offer sheet in the first week of July if either they file, or the team takes them to arbitration.

With the recent extensions signed by Colorado’s Paul Stastny and Los Angeles’ Anze Kopitar, one could make the argument that the only elite potential Group 2 unsigned free agent on an entry level contract is Phil Kessel of the Boston Bruins.

Kessel is the only player in that category with more than seven goals (he has 13) and one of two players with 20 points (Kris Versteeg of the Chicago Blackhawks is the other). The only other forwards with more than 15 points who are potential Group 2 free agents without salary arbitration rights are Kessel’s teammate David Krejci and the Rangers’ Brandon Dubinsky.

Wheeler was drafted, he just didn't want to play with the Coyotes. He was offered a max entry-level deal that he declined making him a FA. I know a lot of college players prefer to not be drafted, especially if they are going to stay four years, so they can choose which team they'll go to.

I would think the key to keeping revenue high will be renegotiating the TV contracts once the VS contract is up.
With the NHL gaining popularity again (particularly in the US) you would have to think that ESPN will at least come to the table next time.
The VS. contract ends after 2010-2011 so I wouldn't worry too much about the cap.
