Fun story along the fence line watching the stretching etc.
FAN ON FENCE: “Hey, Tito.”
TITO (Half turns, sees the guy and turns back saying over his shoulder) “You expect me to talk to you, take off that Yankee hat.”
FAN: “But I was rooting for youse guys.”
TITO: “Yeah, sure.”
CROWD EN MASSE: “Burn the hat!!! Burn the hat!!!”
We wandered over to watch the regulars take an infield drill. They all start by kneeling down to take some grounders. Never hit right back at them but one side or the other. It seemed as though Pedroia was standing unnoticed taking a turn. Finally kneels down (I suspect he was up for but one turn) and our section in the stands had a lot of conversation about his shortness. Lowell and Thurston @3rd, Lugo and Argenis Diaz @ short, Pedroia and Cora @ 2nd and Casey and Youk @ 1st. Casey does seem to have pretty soft hands. Gotta watch that.
Pitching/BP, meaning that Sox pitchers were tossing to hitters. It’s hard to gauge anything as the pitchers throw a mixture of pitches (4-5-6) and then “tell” the hitter what’s coming. Suffice it to say that none of Youks, Coco and Drew did a lot with Oki who was pitching to Tek. Kyle Snyder followed Oki and was also not getting hit very hard. The pitchers are way ahead of the hitters as of today. Mark Wagner took over behind the plate for both David Aardsma and Lee Gronkiewicz. They were also ahead of the second batch of hitters, Tek, Kielty and Casey.
At an adjacent field Lowell, Manny and Papi were in the 1st group and that place was surrounded by fans.
As always Papi drilled some shots that had the crowd yelling. It was interesting enough that Youk and Drew finished on our field and went over to stand behind the cage on Papi’s field and watch. The pros watching the PROS.
We hung around after the relatively short BPs ended and the crowd moved toward the clubhouse seeking autographs. We had heard that there might be an extended BP for some of the big sticks. They were to
swing at the coaches. That didn’t happen but some of the starters came back and ran some bases. Lugo,
Lowell, Papi, Manny, and a couple of mlers put in another ½ hour.
Tomorrow we should see a couple of starters and/or Paps toss BP.
My wife and I had words,
But I didn't get to use mine.
