Once again the heavens portended great things.

From The Sky and Telescope Article.
"Even in the waning-gibbous moonlight, the dim, diffuse, outermost glow of gas was a little more than twice the diameter of the bright disk of dust. All this was around 12:25 a.m. EDT (4:25 UT) October 29th, right after the Sox won the World Series. I'm sure I wasn't the only one running back and forth between the telescope and the baseball game — just like the last time the Sox won the Series, in 2004 in the middle of a total lunar eclipse."

Apparently the brightening began just as the World Series started.
Full article and time line. Sky and Telescope.

Does this answer "Who God wants to win"?

I'll leave that to you.

In any case look up this All Hallows Eve.
To find Comet Holmes in the night sky.

I would definitely be up for Red Sox AstroMojo, but it's the rainy season here in BC, and the chances of our seeing anything in the sky this evening aren't very good. But hey, local overcast is why we have internet-distributed telescopy, right?

I can never see this 2004 picture often enough:

I'm not sure whether Comet Holmes can help build the team for the long term, but Cole Porter definitely plans ahead for next season.

Have you heard? It's in the stars
Next July we collide with Mars.
Well, did you evah?
What a swell party this is!

LOL!

What if it's this-> Sox lost World Series ball?
WTF that must been some party if they lost track of the ball.
Bet it shows up on Letterman, better yet on Leno with Manny!

Rev. Sprowl may have to come up with a doozy of offseason sermon to get the ball to show up again.

Speaking of Sprowl and off-day sermons...

OT

Maybe we could launch a pretend game thread. Let's say Beckett is pitching, but he barehands a screamer hit right to the mound, and as a precaution Tito takes him out and......

We could have pretend moaning, cussing, groaning, b***ing, whining...people could post "Game.Over" in the 2nd inning...or, "this doesn't look like a Championship team at all" or "they don't deserve to win this game" or "Worst. Game. Ever."

Seriously though, even though it's nice to finally eat, sleep, etc. on a normal schedule, I am jonesing for baseball already. Running home from work, hooking up the XM , hoping I get a signal, eating take-out and game-threading...gone until next season.

Favorite T-shirt:
"Baseball is life--all the rest is just details"

2nd favorite:
"Is it 7:05 yet?"

(sorry if I hijacked the comet thread...I didn't know where else to put this......)

It's Halloween. Maybe we should all go as PN23 -- now THAT's scary.

We might not get any candy, though

Hijacking a gamethread? Inconceivable! Non-sequiturs are essential to a game thread.

Reverend Sprowl has a touch of laringytis, and will be taking a break between sermons. The pulpit's always open, though, when the spirit inspires any lurker.

I imagine we'll have game threads for special events, like parades, comets, big trades or free-agent signings -- especially for the big off-season events, like the General Managers' Meetings (Orlando, Nov. 5-8) or the Winter Meetings (Nashville, Dec. 3-6). When the rumors pop up, bring them to the game thread first. When there's confirmation, then they'll need their own sandbox threads.

I'm also thinking that we need one all-purpose Hot-Stove Sermon / Offseason Fellowship thread. The thread would be a home for us to share first thoughts, wild trade scenarios, and any wishful thinking that occurs to us. It's also a good place to try out ideas that any lurker thinks might need threads of their own. Posts in game threads and sermons don't count toward a lurker's total posts, and that's a good thing. These threads are good places to try out ideas that may be post-worthy... or not.

They are also the place for all the jokes, pix, videos, and lyrics that lurker nation holds dear (NSFW included). This is where we meet to warm our hands by the hot stove.

So whaddaya think, lurker nation? Would this be a good way to use the game threads during the off-season?

Hey, speaking of Halloween...

To my mild surprise, and great pleasure, we got a Red Sox attired trick-or-treater last night - A white, skinny 10-12 year old Big Papi. I asked him what his favorite play from the playoffs was and he said it was Coco Crisp's catch to end the ALCS. He must read too much CHB or something though 'cause when I told him mine was the Manny ALDS walkoff homer, he started right in on the missed HR/arguing with the ump single :(

I was also pleased that in general, the overall quality of trick-or-treaters was much better than it has been the last few years. Numbers were about the same as last year, but still worlds better than the nadir of 2~3 years ago, and there were more little kids this year and not only was the average costume better, but there were less kids who'd put no thought or effort at all into their costumes. Neighborhood-wide VORTOT (Value Over Replacement Trick-Or-Treater) is way up this year.

Sounds reasonable to me. Like, just now, I needed somewhere to post about trick-or-treaters in Red Sox costumes and didn't want to start a thread just for something that silly.
