The Rocks beat the Phils and the D'Backs. The D'Backs beat the Cubs.

Watch for the bunt single by Taveras. I don't have stats but I think he does that more than anyone else in MLB.

A buddy and I set a nightly over/under on the moment of Tim McCarver's first incredibly stupid statement. Tonight's line has been set at one minute before the upcoming top of the hour. Place your bets accordingly.

Um, I don't think Soulja Boy jives with Beckett. Manny, for sure. Idiots at FOX...

I don't mean to keep being argumentative with you, but why is the 21 of 22 that much more relevant than the fact that they were 76-72 over the first 90% of the season? I can understand giving some degree of increased weight to recent results, but barring some wholesale personnel changes, it seems better to evalute the team over their entire season performance.

Not necessarily. I don't know how old you are, but the 1973 Mets were in last place on 8/30 and took the powerhouse A's to the bottom of the 9th in game 7 of the WS. It doesn't matter how cold you were 3 months ago as long as you are hot when it counts. I remind you once again of the Cardinals from last year. They barely made the playoffs and then won it all over the heavily favored Tigers.

The MFYs were 8 or 9 games under .500 and 14 games back of the Sox earlier this year, and they ended up only finishing a handful of games behind the Sox and making the playoffs after scores of people had written them off.

That's because he can't hit.

For what it's worth, the Baseball Prospectus simulations have the Sox winning the series nearly 60 percent of the time.

So...Josh Beckett wins and throws a curveball.

You can always count on Fox for insightful and thought-provoking Scouting Reports.

It's too early to do a drinking game for that -- you'd be smashed by the 2nd inning.

I dunno about the exact moment of his first stupid statement, but I'm setting the line at +7 as to the number of stupid things he says during the broadcast

Has anybody noticed that Beckett has now officially joined the ranks of elite pitchers who get the trapezoidal strike zone? (i.e., it widens from the waist down).

ESPN had it even higher for the Sox. 75% of the time, the Sox won.

Cool. 3-0 now 3-2 on Kaz.

I pulled for him when he was on the Mets and I have nothing against him now. It just didn't work out for him at Shea.

I'm 27. :)

The point is that teams go on hot and cold streaks (relative to their "true" level of ability) all the time, and there's no grounds for assuming that a hot streak is an indication that a team has suddenly figured out how to play well after being mediocre for most of the season. (Doesn't that seem a little implausible?) Of course, in some cases, it's something of a regression to a team's true level of ability, as in the case of the MFY this year. And I'll certainly grant that the Rockies were a 90-win team who took a while to get going.

The predictive power of a team's record increases as the number of games considered increases. If teams really did suddenly change their true ability level at such short notice, this wouldn't be the case.
