The blood-sucking pests at Jacobs Field were a subject of controversy in game two of the ALDS. But enough about the Yankees...

I am unoriginal and unfunny. Please put me out of my misery and cliche yields to optimism, the subject of yesterday's sermon.
Posted Image

Speaking of optimism, here's a fun stat: including both regular season and postseason, the Sox have won their last six games following a day off. Undefeated over the last MONTH.

This guy pitches for Boston tonight:

The Japanese national team's uniforms bear a striking resemblance to Cleveland Indian colors. I'm declaring that to be good I am unoriginal and unfunny. Please put me out of my misery.

Jake Westbrook scares me not. I anticipate Daisuke Matsuzaka to give nightmares to all the little boys and girls of northeast Ohio.

Posted Image
...will not be a factor, making Joba look like a silly fool.

As for Cleveland, the only "midge" they'll have to worry about is this guy...

Oh, and finally, WIN.

I'll be bringing lots of firsts I am unoriginal and unfunny. Please put me out of my misery to the game tonight. First time in Ohio (and thus first trip to the Jake). First time seeing Dice-K pitch in person. First time to a playoff baseball game (and thus first time at a Sox playoff game).

Win.

I blame myself...I left off the Dylan words and instead posted Band lyrics for Saturdays' game thread.

This is War: Re-group, make adjustments, stay calm & optomistic, keep the baseball gods happy:

I was sittin' home alone one night in L.A.,
Watchin' old Cronkite on the seven o'clock news.
It seems there was an earthquake that
Left nothin' but a Panama hat
And a pair of old Greek shoes.
Didn't seem like much was happenin',
So I turned it off and went to grab another beer.
Seems like every time you turn around
There's another hard-luck story that you're gonna hear
And there's really nothin' anyone can say
And I never did plan to go anyway
To Black Diamond Bay.

( ...And I really never did plan to go to Cleveland, either)

That's a lot of firsts. Hope you see your first Red Sox, Dice-K, playoff win in Ohio. Actually, if some other Red Sox pitcher than Dice-K gets the win, that's OK also. The other results, however, are mandatory. Here's Chief Wahoo after tonight's game.

We BEAT UP ON Cleveland's two best pitchers. Even if the second game didn't turn out like we wanted, our bats have shown no mercy against two aces. The rest of the starting staff should be cake. Or toast. However you care think about it. I'm looking for double digits on our end for at least two games in Cleveland.

Win.

Dice-K will be turning the Rock'n'Roll city Japanese tonight.

Dice-K is going to the bug-filled great outdoors at Jacobs Field tonight. He will be the Godzilla to the Indians' Bambi.

Dice-K, Wake, and Beckett are our bucket brigade to put out the Indians' extra inning fire at the banks of the Cuyahoga.

...and Papelbon will be the flamethrower making sure the Indians' chance of returning to Boston is fully extinguished.

I blame myself...I left off the Dylan words and instead posted Band lyrics for Saturdays' game thread.

This is War: Re-group, make adjustments, stay calm & optomistic, keep the baseball gods happy:

Lazy stadium night
Dice-K on the mound.
"Strike three," the umpire said,
Batter have to go back and sit down.

Dice-K, million-dollar-man,
Nobody can throw the ball like Dice-K can.

Used to work on Japanese farm
But the old men wouldn't pay
So he packed his glove and took his arm
An' one day he just ran away.

Dice-K , million-dollar-man,
Nobody can throw the ball like Dice-K can.

Come up where the Red Sox are,
Dress up in a bone white suit,
Smoke a custom-made cigar,
Wear an alligator boot.

Dice-K, million-dollar-man,
Nobody can throw the ball like Dice-K can.

Japanese born and bred,
Love to hunt the little quail.
Got a hundred-acre spread,
Now he never wants for tail.

Dice-K, million-dollar-man,
Nobody can throw the ball like Dice-K can.

Travis Hafner at the plate
Seein' nothin' but the curve,
Swing too early or too late
Got to eat what Dice-K serve.

Dice-K, million-dollar-man,
Nobody can throw the ball like Dice-K can.

Even Francona-san grins
When the Dice is in the game.
Every season 15 wins
Can he make the Hall of Fame?

Dice-K, million-dollar-man,
Nobody can throw the ball like Dice-K can.

Cleveland's Curse
"In the Indians' case, it all goes back to Rocky Colavito or Bobby Bragan, depending on whom you ask.

Colavito was a wildly popular Tribe slugger who had back-to-back 40-homer seasons in the late '50s. However, general manager Frank Lane, embittered over Colavito's salary demands, traded his 26-year-old star (and reigning home run champ) to the hated Detroit Tigers in exchange for Harvey Kuenn (the reigning batting champ). Lane further angered Colavito fans by saying, "What's the big deal? All I did was trade hamburger for steak."

The other, lesser-known curse is that of Bobby Bragan, who managed the Indians in 1958. Legend has it that Bragan, after being fired from the job, marched out to the pitcher's mound at Municipal Stadium and declared that the Indians would never win the pennant again. For his part, Bragan denied ever doing such a thing."

Tonight, the Sox will score before Matsuzaka even takes the mound. And then again, a few more times, for good measure.

I just set up a spreadsheet.

For the playoffs so far, the nine normal starters for the Sox are hitting, as an aggregate, .286/.392/.484/.876. The numbers are carried by Manny, Papi, Youks and Lowell, sure, but still: that's sick. Even Coco and Lugo, hardly tearing the cover of the ball, have .300 OBPs for the playoffs.

Wow. And we haven't even faced a bad starter yet.

To me this is a must win even though it is 1-1. Bats need to come alive today, Dice-K needs to put this Cleveland lineup away, the guys in that lineup have shown they are very patient. Hopefully the walks won't kill us today. I like our chances. One game at a time boys,

Wow. I don't watch daytime TV that often, but these ads after the end of the Tyra Banks show leading into the game are almost entirely for colleges. Weird. Maybe that's San Francisco broadcast TV for you.

BTW: Tyra is talking about the science of Gaydar.
