Treebeard: Hoom, hoom. Ahem.
Posted Image
Welcome to the Offday Sermon and Entmoot, October 1 and 2, 2007.

Brethren and Sistren, fir and cedar, oak and ash, kauri and tineo. Settle into the topsoil of your pews. Buttress yourselves, stretch out your roots, and drink deeply of the Dirty Water in which we rejoice.

Learn now the lore of AL Playoffs!
First name the four, our heroes and their foes:
Noblest of all, the Red Sox Nation;
Angels fallen, they have no prayer;
Indian braves, at the right time peaking;
Yankees vile, dark lords of the Bronx.

To conquer the ignoble, we seek our I am unoriginal and unfunny. Please put me out of my misery in the web of life. These are the tree beards from the temperate rainforests: lichens and fungi, manferns and moss.

Here endeth the welcome. Now speak of what is in your hearts: of silly stuff or matters of great import; of videos and booty shorts; of what is past, and what is yet to come. And every so often, speak of baseball.

Really pretty pix. I have a thing for beards, but these are all so... wet. When I was trying to come up with enough camels to match 4 KISS pandas, I came across something dustier.

Posted Image

You can barely see the tiny, mostly white camels. All you can see is their enormous shadows, cast by the setting sun. I have enough camels now to count down a full herd of magic numbers. Magic numbers, beards and camels: that's what's on my mind.

Ah, Dusty...you are still trying to top my KISS pandas hm? Did one of us ever officially win that vote? Your camels are and were impressive....but I do think my passed out basset hounds and snorting pandas will be victorious....(the crowd cheers...HHAAAARRRHHHH).....

In the meantime, I shall again go with Sprowl's nature I am unoriginal and unfunny. Please put me out of my misery, and share some of the beauty of Massachusetts on this peaceful offday sermon. All pictures taken by yours truly, photography is a hobby I enjoy a great deal.

So the sun sets on another regular season - I'm excited about the playoffs getting under way but already I miss it. Hurry up Wednesday!

I never got a chance to post yesterday, so here are some a couple of sunset pictures of my own.

Posted Image

It's amazing the beauty right outside your backdoor if you just take a look every once-in-a-while. We get great sunsets just about every night - spectacular reds, oranges, purples and yellows set against beautiful cloud formations and rich blues as deep as the ocean. It's different every night and the colors change by the minute while it's going on.

Freaky pink sky one evening:
Posted Image

One of the coolest sunset moments I've seen was a late afternoon while the sun was still fairy high above the horizon - the sky was a brilliant yellow and there were a bunch of tall fluffy clouds that were being backlit by the sun. I happened to be looking up at the sky, thinking to myself that I should go get the camera, when a meteor streaked slowly (for a meteor) across an opening in the clouds near the sun which lit up its smoke/vapor trail brilliantly. It was fükken unvbelievable.

So the Padres have Jake Peavy taking the hill in a one game playoff tonight against the Rockies in Colorado? Awesome.

Far from Fort Myers, where it began,
Now to the playoffs it has gone,
And we must follow, if we can.

Nice shots btw, Patman!

And Sprowl- what about the Pinyons? No one ever remembers us. :buddy:

Another of my favorite scenes in the movie- the camera panning over the forest as Treebeard recites the last part of his poem to the Entwives. Very nicely done.

Three wins for the division series under the sky
Seven playoff teams set in stone
Nine innings per game they do ply,
One ring for the Sox in their Fenway home
In the land of Boston where dark waters lie
One series to rule them all, One series to find them,
One series to determine all, and to the Red Sox bind them
In the land of Boston where dark waters lie

Hobbit name: Dimple Sandydowns
Elven name: Nienna Eärfalas (How does one even pronounce that???)
LOTR character: Celeborn -- I've never seen or read LOTR. Who is this and is being him/her a good or a bad thing?

That said, I am thrilled for kitch that he's been promoted. I'll miss him here at the Sandbox though.

He's Galadriel's consort and Lord of Lothlorien, but he has all of 2 dull lines in the movie, and not much more in the books. It's not a bad thing, to be sure (but I'd go back to the web site and get a different character. ).

As for pronunciation, Tolkien used the umlaut over a vowel to indicate two syllables, rather than a diphthong: ni-EN-ah ay-AR-fah-lass. I think the accent goes on the second syllable in both words.

Why do I know all this? Evidence of a seriously misspent youth.

He's an Elf, the lord of Lothlorien (an enchanted forest that the Fellowship takes refuge in after they escape from some really traumatic underground goings-on). A conscientious, somewhat parochial sort. His wife Galadriel is definitely the star of the family, and gets all the attention. But you get the feeling it's Celeborn who makes sure the laundry gets done.

Being him is a very good thing, as long as you don't mind living in your spouse's shadow.

Thumbs up on the pronunciation. Could possibly be ay-ar-FAH-lass, but I like your take better.

Misspent youth? Hey, I could have been doing drugs.

You've all been so diligently entish, that nobody's offered a proper prayer. I guess that leaves it up to me.

I'm not much good with words, Lord, or with the Lord's Word. But I want my team to win. I want them to win it all. I want them to sweep. I want those 11 games to pass in the blink of an eye and a gust of laughter, and I want to party all winter long around Fenway. I want to smirk on the streets when I visit New York. I want 2004 to be just the beginning. I want all these things because I want my neighbors to be happy, and my city to be happy.

And me, Lord, even me. I want me to be happy all winter long. Because even though I'm trying to think of others, it doesn't come naturally. It's mostly about me. In fact, it's all about me -- and you too, Lord, if you'd like to come along.

Amen.

Little Bear looks to be a rugged fellow, and you've nailed his look perfectly: "Aw, c'mon, Dad. Don't go in and read the paper. I was just startin' to catch good!"
He's got longer legs; good for climbing!

As for our guy, we wouldn't be afraid of him running off - he sticks close to his mom. But the rules at Acadia say dogs are welcome as long as they stay on a lead. His name is Turbo, btw, cause he's turbocharged. In a straight line I can just keep up with him; if he starts zigzagging, he's gone.

On-leash parks. On-leash national forests. Ridiculous rules, set up to control the fool who brings a pit bull where it doesn't belong.

Canada is a little more sensible. Unless it's a high foot/car traffic area, it's more like at-your-own-risk: if your dog brings a bear running back after you, don't say we didn't warn you. In ten years off-leash in bear country, Little Bear has never brought a big bear back to me. And I didn't have to put a perfectly well behaved little beastie on a leash for no good reason. [/end rant]

Dear Mr. Sparkle,

Thank you. I was getting cutesied to death too.

Off topic(?) No baseball or football today. That SD - Rockies game put me in the mood. Hey Selig, can you move up one of those NL games to today for me? MLB loves to stretch it out more and more, don't they? I was just thinking, maybe during one of the world series games in Boston in November, if it gets to that, it will snow and completely freak out the Arizona snakes. They'll molt their skins and then get smoked to death by Papelbon fastballs.
