Bowden gave up just five hits and one run in seven innings to lift the Sea Dogs to a 5-1 win over the New Britain Rock Cats before a capacity Hadlock Field crowd of 7,368.
After lasting just four innings a week ago in his start at the "Futures at Fenway," his only bad game in over a month, Bowden rebounded by striking out seven and walking none.
"It's history," said Bowden (7-4). "I can throw that over my shoulder. I've been trying to work out a few kinks. I'm starting to get on the right track."
Perhaps even the fast track to the sort of success that has been predicted for him as Boston's first-round pick in 2005.
"Sometimes he's quick to get down on himself," said Portland catcher Dusty Brown. "But once he got off to a good start, his confidence grew."
Bowden established command from the outset, retiring the first nine batters in order and striking out four.
He worked his way out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fourth by getting Matt Moses to pop up, then freezing Rashad Eldridge with a 2-2 fastball.
Portland hitters had their own troubles trying to reach Rock Cats starter Oswaldo Sosa (1-3), until breaking through for single runs in the fourth and fifth, both driven in by Andrew Pinckney.
After doubling in Aaron Bates in the fourth, Pinckney laced a two-out full-count single in the fifth to score Jay Johnson, making it 2-0.
"I just tried to get some good swings on the ball," said Pinckney. "I was just focusing on that."

Lancaster trailed until the eighth inning and did not have a single hit through the first five innings. The controversy began in the fifth inning when Wagner was beaned in the helmet on a pitch by Mavericks starter Cibney Bello. For the Mavericks, who have already shattered the league record for most batters hit in the season, it was the second time a High Desert pitcher had a JetHawk in the head in the last week. JetHawks manager Chad Epperson and Mavericks manager Scott Steinmann, a former JetHawks player and coach, got into a heated discussion on the field. Both teams were warned by the umpires against any further incidents.

Lars Anderson had two hits and an RBI for the Drive. Christopher Province (3-1) took the loss.
Greenville starter Joseph Guerra pitched 4 1/3 innings, giving up one run on six hits.
Lowell Spinners
Quote
Vermont (30-24) took an early lead in the top of the third inning when third baseman Anthony Benner homered on the first pitch of the inning.
Lowell (30-24) came right back in the bottom of the fourth inning, scoring three runs on three hits. Yamaico Navarro singled and advanced to second on an error. After a Rafael Cabreja walk, Brett Lewis laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners.
One out later, Oscar Tejeda, in his first game since a promotion from the Gulf Coast League Red Sox, singled to score Navarro before Carlos Fernandez-Oliva followed with an RBI single to score Cabreja. Tejeda scored two pitches later on a passed ball.
Lowell starter Jordan Craft allowed one run on four hits in four and one third innings, striking out six and walking three. He could not garner the victory, reaching his pitch count and departing in the middle of the fifth. Scott Lonergan (1-0) pitched out of a jam in the fifth and picked up his first professional victory with an inning and two-thirds of scoreless relief.

1. Kris Johnson with another good game. He's been close to dominant his last 3 starts after a rocky year in high A, somewhat understandable for the jump from low A and pitching in a hitter's park.
2. Mark Wagner continuing to hit well. Assuming Jon Still plays another position, Wagner's our catcher of the future, isn't he? I wouldn't mind seeing him in Portland for a few weeks and the playoffs.
3. Jonathan Still off to a good start in Lancaster. The dude can hit, and hit for power, but what position is he gonna play? Shouldn't he get some defensive time at 1B/catcher as well?
4. Oscar Tejada promoted to Lowell after a good year in the GCL. Not bad for a 17 year old.
