The most electricity you've ever felt in Fenway Park?

In your trips to Fenway, when is a time that really sticks out for you? When could you just not hear yourself talk if you tried and you could just feel the electricity going through your body? For me, this isn't really a contest.
It has to be on July 29, 2001 against the Chicago White Sox. You can imagine how I felt when I found out David Cone would be going head to head with Sean Lowe. Two of the best pitchers of our time, and I was going to be there. No, wait, that's not it. It was Nomar Garciaparra's first game of the 2001 season. Before the game you could just feel it. And when the lineups were announced, I've never heard the place louder. "Batting third, number five, the shortstop, Nomaaaar Garciiiiaaaaapaaaarrra!" It was just nuts. It was just as loud when he came up for the first time, but he grounded out. He struck out in his second AB, but when he lead off in the 6th inning, my God, that was just special. He hit a HR to centerfield and the place just went crazy.
I've never felt like that in all my times at Fenway Park, except maybe Trot Nixon's HR in the 2003 ALDS, which was also absolutely nuts.

1. Manny's first game in Fenway, watching him hit that homerun while the place exploded around me was just nuts.
2. Pretty much any of Pedro's starts during his prime. Every fifth day at Fenway was like Pedro day - the place was just crazy with that feeling of 'what is he going to do this time?'
3. Last night's game because it's the first time I've been reminded of #2 since Pedro left town.

Even before the fight, the place was complete bedlam. IIRC, alcohol was not being served in the stadium after the 3rd inning. There was a fight on the field, a fight in the bullpen, fans getting involved, fights all over the stands. It was completely electric.
Let's not even mention the fact that the Series was tied 1-1 going into that game.
Mayhem.

I was at this game, and for me, I had never seen Fenway that crazy. For obvious reasons games like that and against the Yanks, not sure if that could be topped. The only thing that could come close for me would be at a game in which the Sox won the WS at Fenway.I was at Pedro's first start (not Dice k's), but for me it was Game 5 of the 2004 ALCS after the Ortiz base hit in the 14th. At that moment, everyone in the crowd knew that the Sox had a legitimate chance to come back in that series.

Had the Red Sox not been pwn3d by King Felix, it would have been crazy. The crowd as a whole WANTED there to be electricity, tried to get it going on a two-strike count, but it just didn't happen.

It was first time that the Sox and Yanks had ever faced each other in a playoff series, and it was the first time Pedro and Clemens ever faced each other.
The three moments that really stuck out were:
Clemens's introduction as the starting pitcher, which drew the loudest boos I've ever heard at Fenway, louder than Arod's first AB as a Yankee in '04.
Pedro's intro, which is still the loudest roar I've ever heard for a player at Fenway. You have to remember that not only was he the starting pitcher, but this was also the first game at Fenway after the Game 5 performance in Cleveland.
Valentin's HR in the bottom of the first, which was the loudest I've ever heard Fenway in terms of reacting to a play on the field.
As for honorable mentions, Manny's HR in his first AB is defintely up there. I remember, in his second AB, he struck out and got a standing O on his way back to the dugout.
Hillebrand's 8th inning HR in '02 vs. Rivera was a great moment too.

I was sitting on the 3rd base grandstand underneath the overhang. The energy in the crowd was pretty much infinite. The sound was so loud it was intoxicating. You could feel it in your ribcage, and it was seemingly continuous until the Perez HR.
Pretty much silent after that, which was just as deafening.

The Sox were facing elimination in the extra innings, and the atmostphere was extremely tense leading up to Trot's at-bat. When he hit the HR, all the tension just erupted. You know that little "jump-dance" that the Sox do at home plate after a walk-off HR? Well, the whole stadium was doing that after Trot's.

The ovation for Pedro last year was goosebump-inducing. I think there was even quite a bit of dust in the air while he waved following the highlight reel of his Red Sox career. "Welcome back and welcome always, Pedro Martinez." Good stuff.
Game 4 of the '03 ALDS vs. Oakland was gleeful mayhem during and after the 8th inning rally starring Nomar, Manny, and that new guy with the gap-toothed smile, David Ortiz. After the game people hung around Fenway for a LONG time. Strangers high-fiving each other. Dancing in the streets. Ortiz and Manny, wearing cowboy hats, stick their heads out the team bus to the delight of the fans. On to Oakland!!!!
Maybe Uncle Stiffy can tell us about that great game in 1912 when Smoky Joe Wood beat Walter Johnson 1-0. I hear Fenway was electric that day.

1-Game 1 2004 WS-people were so pumped and Fenway filled with positve vibes after the ALCS, I don't think I had ever experienced that feeling in Fenway before. The place was just so freakin' upbeat
2-The BF Dent Game-nuf said
3-the game the day before that against the BJ's, Tiant's pitching a shut-out, the scoreboard watching, knowing if the MFY lose there's a game tomorrow-there was-see above

Same here. Everyone was juiced, pitch by pitch by pitch.Of the games I've attended, the one that always stood out was Game 3 of the ALCS in '99.
Paul O'Neill stonefaced in right field as the crowd chants, "Where is Roger? In the shower" and "Just like Cleveland, just like Cleveland."

The most explosive I've ever seen Fenway was after the Trot Nixon walk-off HR in Game 3 of the 2003 ALCS.
Most explosive for me was Carbos HR in '75 game 6.
You could actually see (it seemed )the park shaking, I thought the park was going to collapse. It was ecstasy and terror at the same time.

1. 1998 - Pedro's 1st Fenway start - it was just unreal. I didn't have a lot of experience in Fenway prior to this game as I lived in DC, but there were so many people jacked up waiving Domincan flags, etc, that it was totally intoxicating. The fact that the Sox scored 9 runs in the bottom of the 9th (culminating with Mo Vaughn hitting the walk-off Grand Slam) the day before to beat the Mariners may have added to the electricity.
2. 2004 - Game 2 of the World Series - it was a cold, rainy night, but nobody cared. Everyone was still drunk with the euphoria of the MFY series and the Game 1 WS victory.
3. 1999 - Game 4 ALDS - the house was literally shaking. I felt like I was in RFK back in the 80's for a Redskin game.
4. 1999 - Game 3 ALDS - same as above.
5. 2004 - Game 5 ALCS - another freezing cold night, and the energy was more nervous than anything else, but when the hit fell and the Sox won I think there was a universal "they're going to DO THIS" feeling that was just amazing.
6. 2003 - Game 3 ALCS - no explanation needed here.
7. 2005 - Opening Day - just a happy day all around. Even with the unbelievably bad "song" they played while raising the flag.
8. 2004 - Game 3 ALDS - Papi's first playoff game walk-off HR. Who knew what was about to happen over the next ten days?
9. 2006 - The Return of Pedro - everyone was jacked. I don't think I was the only person in the Park that was conflicted as to what we wanted to see. In any event there was a serious energy throughout Fenway that night.
10. 2004 - Game 4 ALCS. A crappy weather Sunday with the Sox down 0-3. I offered up a ticket to this game in the ticket swap forum but nobody wanted it. There weren't many positive vibes in the park that day, and I didn't get the sense that there were many believers even afterwards. I think there was more of a "at least we didn't get swept" vibe, but it was a good vibe nonetheless. The Roberts SB in the 9th was the most nervous I've ever been at any point in my life (which is a sad but true statement).
As for last night, I agree with Frat in that people *wanted* to go nuts and there was certainly more energy than usual, but the opportunity to really have it go to the next level never truly presented itself. Still a high-energy game, but not good enough to crack my Top Ten.

The Pedro/Zimmer game, also known as Game 3 of the 2003 ALCS.

Agreed. I walked from the top of Newbury to Fenway that day and every step you could feel the buzz. Outside the stadium, you felt like it was the start of a revolution or something. I actually felt nervous for the Yankee fans in the park that day, people jsut wanted to explode

Of course, Hatteberg hit into a double play ending the threat and Jeter homered in the ninth, ending the game and, with it, the season. But that moment was simply amazing.

July 13, 1995 vs. Texas
The first game back after the All-Star Break with both teams in 1st place. Former President Bush and his then-largely unknown son were in attendance. Hot as hell and Roger, beet red and sweating like a pig (this was at the height of his "Fat Elvis" period), puts the Sox in a hole early by serving up a dong to Juan Gone and two to Pudge. He's gone by the 4th or 5th, the score is 8-0, and the Sox start to mount a comeback. One run is already in when Val walks to load the bases and up comes Mo, who proceeds to hit a bases-clearing double into the triangle. Fenway had already woken up during the rally but completely exploded - sore now 8-4. Next up? Canseco, who hit the most absurd home run I've ever seen - it launched at about a 45 degree angle down the 3B line and was over EVERYTHING in about 2-3 seconds. Absolute pandemonium - Fenway was shaking and I don't think I've ever heard a louder crowd ever - it was deafening for a solid minute or so. That was it, though - the Sox wound up losing by a run.
July 26, 1997 vs. Anaheim
A perfect summer Saturday afternoon. Bottom of the 9th, Sox down by 2, with the top of the order coming up. Nomar and Val both single. Mo then hits a walk off that lands about 5 rows in front of me in the RF bleachers. It didn't matter that the Sox were already about 20 games back - 33,000 people went absolutely batshit crazy for what seemed like a good ten minutes or so.

I don't go very often, so not many games to pick from. The one that sticks out is Nomar coming back from his wrist surgery. It was the most excitement that I have ever felt at Fenway.
Funny story about that one. I was up on the monster standing next to a guy who had his lineup card and pen out, ready to score the game. The announcer was going through the lineups and when Nomar was announced (to thunderous applause), this guy turned to his buddy and, with a furrowed brow, said, "Pokey's not playing?"
Sigh.

Perhaps the most memorable moment of the game for me was the ride on the green line long after the game was over. Some teenaged kid was jumping all over the place, screaming like he was on some kind of trip. He was just hopped up on the game, but was almost manic.
I bought a hat at the park that day because the sun was in my eyes at the start of the game. It has been my go to hat ever since. When the cheap plastic strap at the back broke, i replaced it with some old climbing webbing. I'm sure my son will someday steal the hat from me, but as long as he respects the history, i won't even mind.

The Sox are down two in the 9th with two outs and one on. A toasted Octavio Dotel is on the mound and Varitek hits a 2 run walk-off blast into the right field box seats. I have never been at a "walk off" game and this was pretty electric.
#42
Posted 12 April 2007 - 04:27 PM
The game was exciting, but nothing like the 03 ALDS/04 ALCS. In 03, I don't remember people ever sitting down, because the team was on the ropes for both of the Fenway games. I thought overall the ALDS was more electric than the ALCS in 03.
There were a few great walkoffs in 04, but for me the best 2 moments overall were when Dave Roberts scored and the Game 5 walkoff. Bellhorn's and Papi's dingers in Game 1 were incredible, but I think between the crowd that could afford the tickets and the fact everyone was already spent took an edge off.

The game in Sept '95 where they clinched the division left the place absolutely rocking. I was on the 1B grandstand side and we goaded Mo Vaughn into getting up on one of the horses (poor thing).
The "Return of the Stud Who Hits Bombs" last year was probably the most negative energy I've seen, directed at Damon, as well as the most energy that has probably ever been directed at a backup catcher.

July 14, 2005 - Red Sox vs Yankees - This was the game in which Schilling came in from the bullpen for his first appearance as a reliver after missing most of the season with injury. Sure, they went on to lose the game on a A-Rod 2-run shot, but Fenway was definitely as electric as I've ever seen it as Schilling walked from the pen to the mound. That game is also the fastest I've seen the atmosphere at Fenway go from electric to downright morbid.
July 24, 2004 - Red Sox vs Yankees - The Brawl Game. Once the excitement from the brawl passed, and this game stretched on and on, I wouldn't say the mood of the crowd was anything special. The Sox were down, the Yankees were scoring a ton of runs, and the weather was crap. But when the rally started, and when Billy Mueller hit that homerun, I've never seen Fenway so excited. It felt like they played Dirty Water ten times in a row because no one wanted to leave the park. I remember thinking that night that if the crowd was that elated over a regular season win, Fenway would be an amazing place to be for a World Series. I can't even imagine what it must have been like to be at Fenway for those ALCS games 4 and 5.

The air was so charged with electricity before the game that I didn't have to charge my cellphone for two months. I had been bemoaning the fact that I had four seats that were going for $2200 apiece on eBay but in retrospect, the experience made up for it. Incredible.

Another partial answer, the famous "Jaaaaa-reeeeet . . . Jaaaaa-reeeeet . ." game against the Indians in the 1999 ALDS. The Sox were down 2 games to 0. Nomar's wrist was hurt and he didn't play that game. But the fans came through with one of the most awesome tenth man displays ever. Years later, I saw Gammons, in response to a question about strong atmosphere in a ballpark, cite this game and how Jaret Wright was psyched out by the crowd, saying that Wright was looking around in half shock at all of us. Good times.
Disclaimer-I was not able to be in the park for 2004 ALCS games 4 or 5 or the series games.

I was also at the Brawl/Pro walkoff HR game, but for a lot of that game the crowd was pretty subdued as the MFYs went out to a big lead. But that was my fortune as after the MFYs scored six runs in the sixth inning I was able to leave my RF box seats and sit behind the plate with BSL.

2) Game 5, 2004 ALCS. First batter of the game, 0-2 count on Jeter, and the entire park is standing and screaming their brains out. Pedro whiffs Jeter on 3 pitches. Awesome.
3) Daisuke.
