I'm listening to this on WFAN -- feels nice to hear baseball on the radio again.

Eddie Coleman is great to listen to.

ANybody what crew is calling the game for ESPN2? I would hate for the first game of the year to be sullied by the likes of Tim McCarver of Joe Morgan.

Cards opening night Festivities article. Sounds nice.

From MSNBC:

"Pitchers who got the final out of the Cardinals’ last three championships will throw out ceremonial first pitches to their managers: Gibson to Red Schoendienst, Sutter to Whitey Herzog and Wainwright to Tony La Russa. Actor Billy Bob Thornton will be master of ceremonies for the pregame festivities, and REO Speedwagon will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner.” As usual, the Cardinals will enter one at a time in a convertible motorcade snaking around the warning track."

The Billy Bob and REO Speedwagon stuff throws me but otherwise good to see season start and with dueling pitchers sharing New England roots no less.
Remembering the Sidd Finch Anniversary. April 1985. Yikes.

Well, J.M. is there, but that's the Game of the Week. I, for one, being from Mets A.A. land, am overjoyed to have it all back. Here's the first pitch!

Glavin is fun to watch, very smart pitcher; very unassuming. Reminds me of Schill.

And he hits too

Beginning of the game, Joe Morgan raves about Lo Duca hitting 2nd and Wright 5th because Lo Duca is selective and "protects the plate"

Top 4, 2nd and 3rd, pitching around Jose Reyes to get to Lo Duca...Joe Morgan: "See, Lo Duca won't hurt you very much"

Game 1 and he's an idiot already - big shock, I guess.

Reyes with plate discipline is an absolute monster.

Billerica's Own with a nice showing thus far.

Carpenter on the ropes; LaRussa must be ready for a cold one.

Is Yadier at 5 worse than Preston Wilson hitting 2nd?

The Cardinals lineup is not exactly confidence-inspiring...

How bout the starting staff including:

Brandon Looper
Anthony Reyes
Kip Wells

As much as I detest LaRussa, he'll have this team in contention, despite the drek of a pitching staff and several holes in the everyday line-up. Of course, it helps to play in the offensively challenged NL.

But in all fairness, in the NL Central, .500 ball will allow you to be "in contention"

No, ballsy would be asking him to apologize for it.

I don't know why being an arrogant bastard gets you a league of sports journalist apologists.

Last time I checked, a DUI is pretty serious, just like spousal abuse and other things baseball men do that aren't scrutinized as much as PEDs are. Why does Tony get a free pass? Because he's the Brian Billick of Major League Baseball?

Sorry, can't stand him and the DUI just upped it a bit.

Really? That's what he said? I heard an obligatory mention to satiate the fact that it's the elephant in the room followed by some non-criticisms or critical inquiries.

I don't know if the intrepid ESPN team could have made any excuses for his "alleged" episode that occurred "way back in the Spring" that he's already "apologized" for...

driving drunk just isn't something that you can mitigate with excuses and extenuating circumstances.

I feel like he has gotten off pretty easily as well. You heard about it for a day or two, and that was it. Most DUI stories involving sports figures seem to do that; I think it is an indication about how light people take this issue now-a-days; in the eye of the public it isn't a real crime till you hurt someone.

Yeah, great throw by Beltran. Too bad the broadcasters can't match the quality of the camerawork.

How about Tony Gwynn or Orel Hersheiser? Hell, I'd take Jon Kruk at this point...at least he's a funny idiot

I think the comments Miller made about LaRussa stand out exactly because we are used to all these guys (sports figures, celebrities, politicans) getting off so easy that when a pundit, announcer, reporter, etc. simply repeats what we all know already, it's cause for comment in itself.

Not sure why Miller is surprised Glavine is struggling in the 6th. He pretty much was a 6 inning pitcher in the second half of 2006.

What more do you expect from the tandem praising La Russa for hitting Yadier Molina 5th because of his postseason heroics?

Reyes catch gets Glavine out of the jam...

Yadier Molina up with the bases loaded. Heh

LaRussa is a good manager and will have the team in contention, but it's a lousy division in a lousy league and he has

-one of the best 5-10 hitters in baseball history at his peak,
-the best pitcher in the league, and
-two other likely Hall of Famers

to work with. He's not having to work miracles over there.

I think it would have been funny if Miller had made a show of trying to smell the alcohol on LaRussa.

Amazingly poor job this afternoon by Willie Randolph.......

Scott Schoenweis was brought in to face a lefty batter for the second time in two consecutive games and promptly walked the hitter he is paid to get rid of. Unfortunately for Mets fans, Randolph opted against bringing-in a warm Aaron Heillman.........deciding to stay with Schoenweis to face Edgar Renteria with two men on.......and old Edgar hits a 3-run homer to tie a game that was previously 6-3.

The Mets just came back from being down 5-1 with a 5 run bottom of the 9th capped by Carlos Delgado's game winning 2-RBI 1B off Scott Eyre. Even on GameDay it was damn impressive to watch.

The Mets are down 4-3 in the bottom of the 11th. Reyes gets on to open the inning. Armando Benitez balks him to second. Endy Chavez bunts him to third, and then Carlos Beltran grounds out on a drawn in infield, doing nothing and leading to two outs.

Benitez then balks in Reyes from third, and Delgado hits a BOMB to RF to win it.

Unreal.

Benitez sure knows what it feels like to blow games in Shea.

Umps didn't screw the Giants or anything. Both balks were completely legitimate, and that's what Reyes does to teams...he's up there tonight knowing all he has to do is get on base and that tying run is going to score so he just took his walk. He totally baited Benitez into that second balk too, started hopping up the line like he was going to go... He's an amazing baseball player.
