Posted 05 September 2005 - 09:27 AM
Today's Games:
IL: Pawtucket (Tim Kester) vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Martire Franco) [1:05pm]
EL: Portland (TBD) @ Akron (Jake Ditter) [2:05pm]
CL: Wilmington (Jose Vaquedano) vs. Frederick (TBD) [1:05pm]
SAL: Greenville (Jarrett Gardner) vs. Rome (Matt Harrison) [1:05pm]
NYPL: Lowell (Adam Blackley) @ Oneonta (TBD) [7:05pm]
Portland's pitcher has not been announced according to the game story on Seadogs.com. IF they go by the rotation of the past couple of weeks (and they have no real reason to do so)... it would be Kason Gabbard.
Only Lowell has regular season games remaining after today. Portland starts the playoffs against Trenton on Wednesday.

Pawsox and Callups
You can't always measure the success of the season by wins and losses or where a club finishes in the standings. The goal for every minor-league system is to make the parent club better, and so, the PawSox have accomplished that feat this season.
[...]
There's been a lot of upward movement in the organization. The PawSox sent 15 players to Boston this season, and all have contributed at some point.
Pitchers Lenny DiNardo, Jonathan Papelbon, Manny Delcarmen, Abe Alvarez, Cla Meredith, Tim Bausher, Scott Cassidy, Matt Perisho and Jeremi Gonzalez have all made an impact in some way at the big-league level. Position players Kevin Youkilis, Kelly Shoppach, Shawn Wooten, Roberto Petagine, John Olerud and Alejandro Machado also have contributed.
The Red Sox have proven that they are not afraid to promote from within the organization.
Pawsox Notebook
Despite it being the last game of the season for Pawtucket, it was critical for Shoppach to prove he was healthy enough for a call-up to Boston. He caught five innings and went 0-for-1 with a walk and strikeout and showed no ill effects from the injury while running the bases. As a result, he was told after the game that he will join pitcher Manny Delcarmen as the final call-ups to Boston.

Blue Rocks
The Blue Rocks walked dejectedly off the field and into their offseason Monday after another in a long line of close losses.
[...]
[T]he Rocks [...] finished 29-41 in the second half and 60-80 overall. It was the Rocks' worst overall record in their 13 seasons.
They were 15-33 in one-run games.
Bombers
Despite the loss, the Bombers finished with a 37-33 record in the second half of the South Atlantic League season and were 72-66 overall. It was the first winning season for a minor league team in Greenville since 1997, when the Greenville Braves claimed the Southern League title.

Tim Bausher . . . never got in a game. Cla had a 27.00 ERA, I guess that's an "impact". Scott Cassidy's ERA was 40.50. Shawn "0 for 1" Wooten? Kelly "0 for 11" Shoppach? These are contributions?

A bit of a stretch to say that Alvarez, Meredith, Bausher, Cassidy, Perisho, Wooten, and Machado contributed. Or to say that the Sox sent Olerud to Boston; but whatever.
With all due respect to both of you, anyone on the roster for the Boston Red Sox contributes to the cause. Even if only for one day, even if they don't get into a game. One can make an argument about how large their contributions were... or indeed, if the contributions were positive. But, contribute they did. [Tim Bausher contributed by being available to suck up innings if need be on the one day he was on the roster. This is not something to underestimate simply because it was unnecessary for him to be used.]
And, John Olerud was purchased from the Pawsox... so they did indeed send him to Boston. John Olerud was not on rehab... otherwise Curt Schilling and Trot Nixon would be on the list.

I suppose Stern is the #3 CF, but isn't he still on the DL? I've been away for a few days, so I don't know.

So we're not bringing up any more OFs? Sure would be nice to have someone else who can play CF with Damon's health issues.
At this point according to one source, we aren't. However, callups are based on needs of the major league club and therefore callups are never really "done."
IF Damon continues to be unavailable and Stern continues to not get better (he only played part of one rehab in Pawtucket... so apparently he is still injured), I would not be surprised to see someone DFAed to bring Adam Hyzdu or George Lombard up.

The article indicated that the PawSox season was a smashing success in large part because they helped make the big club better by providing players like Bausher, etc. I would also say that the "impact" made by players such as Alvarez, Wooten, and Cassidy was not exactly positive, but whatever. Not a big deal, but I don't think the players that shuttled from Pawtucket to Boston really helped all that much; or provided any more than most AAA clubs.
And, John Olerud was purchased from the Pawsox... so they did indeed send him to Boston. John Olerud was not on rehab... otherwise Curt Schilling and Trot Nixon would be on the list.
Sure, technically it's correct.

But really, thanks for another great season, Brandon. The beginning of autumn and the shrinking of the minor league threads is one of the sadder moments of the year for me.

I guess we don't really have much to talk about when we are picking on the details of an end-of-season puff piece.

What he said. You and amfox provide more useful info than anyone else I can think of on a day in - day out basis.

Brandon,
I want to add my thanks for all your efforts in compiling all the ml game results and wrap ups. You are a SOSH All Star.
Pawtucket should have a prospect-laden team next year. It will be like the heady days of Rose and Pavano having Lester, Sanchez and maybe Hansen, Pap, and Manny depending upon their spring training results. Plus Murphy, and maybe Moss, West, and Hanley.

Yep, these threads are the best and the first thing I check each morning. Thanks guys.
Ditto. Thanks for all the work guys, I slacked off totally in my contributions over the past few years. These threads are the highlight of the day, and sometimes the easiest way to get over a tough loss for the big club before turning in at night.
