Ah, and you don't just get to tell people to shut up, you get to set all the rules of debate, too!  But we knew that, didn't we?

So let's see, Boras was talking about Matsu getting around $15MM/yr.  Suddenly, at the last moment, just when it seems likely to fall through, according to CNNSI, he agrees to a guaranteed $8.7MM/yr.  Hmmm.  Wonder what happened?  Wonder if Matsu discovered he could take about 55% of what Boras wanted because he happened to find on his hotel pillow an envelope from Japan with $10-20MM in it?

So I had predicted it would settle at the last minute with the Sox shelling out a total of no more than $95MM (including posting fee) for 5 years.  Lessee, this is $103.1MM for six years or. . .  $94.6MM for five years!

Carlos is right. What you are suggesting would lead to MLB sanctions against the Red Sox and Boras and possible disbarment of Boras, at the very least. IMO, it's flat-out irresponsible to suggest that this is being done absent any tangible reason to think so.

I don’t have to prove the Sox, Seibu and Boras are playing the game in accordance with the rules specifically set forth by both leagues. You have to come up with some proof that they aren’t if you’re going to continue with that assertion.

Not to pull a friend of a friend type thing, but a guy who's been 100% reliable with Sox news in the past who is connected with the team informed me that the Sox and Seibu split the difference and Matsu will wear #11. Take it for what it's worth.

Heyman has an interesting spin in SI:

Epstein knew the Red Sox needed to sign Matsuzaka after the arch rival Yankees recently added Andy Pettitte for a deal that will likely pay Pettitte $32 million over two years, assuming he doesn't retire after the 2007 season.

Second one is bad, but there is Daisuke.

The caravan is going by police escort to Mass. General Hospital, presumably for Matsuzaka's physical, which is required before any deal is finalized.

Que? How does the # on his back relate to "splitting the difference"?

The guy in the brown jacket is the translator, presumably. The news misidentified him.

Daisuke is a little bigger. He was wearing a big black jacket with fur on the hood.

Phillips is on ESPN now talking about how great Matsuzaka is going to be and how he's the number 1 starter. No mention of his statement a few hours ago that there's no way he'd sign. What a clown.

Huge media contingent and one station said a bunch of people showed up just in time to see the arrival. Many college students from Tufts were there with signs and parents with children.

CBS: "It is a zoo out there right now."

There were a ton of photographers and Channel 7 said there were some students there. Didn't look like a huge crowd though.

Doubt they'll archive it, but 'BZ had the live raw feed on their website.

A friend of mine from BC was there, calling it a Beatles-esque arrival, not that he ever experienced a real Beatles arrival.

Time to order my Matsuzaka shirt for Christmas I suppose.

Phillips also inferred how Farrell (our rookie pitching coach) is in for a big adjustment and should be interesting to see how he handles the Japanese pitchers.

Did anyone else last night catch his comments that since the Sox weren't going to sign Matsuzaka, that they wouldn't go after Zito b/c lefties and Fenway don't mix

Just plain awful. Can't see how ESPN can renew or even keep Phillips on payroll.

I appreciated Brian Kenney griling Steve Philips on Sportscenter to start the show. It got to a point where Steve had that nervous smile, as if to say "whoa, where that come from?" when Kenney suggested some of Philip's comments didn't match up. Kenney also seemed intent on proving how good of a deal it was for th eSox judging his performance with the contracts already given to league-average pitchers. Very entertaining television.

Phillips and Michael Irvin (See "Tony Romo") MUST have dirty pictures of high-level ESPN officials....

The guy in the first set of pictures you posted is not Dice-k. That clearly is him though in this second set. Nice to see Boras smiling (never thought I'd say that), pressure must be off.

Just once I wish someone would put a video together of things Phillips says and show them on air and point out how he seems to have no info yet gives his opinion anyway.

On espn frontpage Expert Picks he was the only expert to say that Daisuke would not sign. Also as mentioned in this thread by others he flat out said talks were DEAD and no deal would get done. What is this guy smoking?

Someone earlier said a "Guess what Steve Phillips said now" thread should be started. I for one agree.

Listening to this guy talk is like getting any football advice from Sean Salisbury.

Edit: caple said no as well...still I don't like phillips
