Nothing concrete yet. This worries me, but I wonder if its his appendix?

SourceThe family of Boston Bruins star Phil Kessel released a statement today about his condition.
The statement.
Phil Kessel is being treated today for a medical issue not related to hockey.
At this time there is no further update on Phil's condition. When there is an update, and it is appropriate to do so, we will update everyone on Phil's health.
We kindly ask that you respect the Kessel family's privacy during this time.
Check back at Boston.com later for further updates.
Hopefully it is nothing, but I won't say I'm not nervous considering the last time something like this happened.

The lack of info in the release seems more ominous than an appendix issue IMO.

There were murmurings of an irregular heart beat over at HFBoards, but thats complete speculation.

That statement sounds eerily similar to what the Red Sox said about Jon Lester earlier this year. I hope his illness is not as serious as Lester's.
First thing that came to my mind. God, I hope it's nothing too serious.

A rumor was just forwarded to me saying Kessel has testicular cancer. Grain of salt, etc. But yikes.
There is some speculation over at HF boards saying the same thing, they were talking about some Rink Rat site that I cant find. I think the mods may have taken it down over there, but the site supposedly said "a good friend" of Phil's told them through e-mail that he had testicular cancer.
Some friend.

Lobel and Burton saying that their sources are confirming the diagnosis of testicular cancer. Take care, Phil...get better.
I'm saddened to hear that, but Kessel is a young, world-class athlete and he should have a terrific future once he beats this. I hope they gave him Mike Lowell's cell number, because there's all kinds of shining examples of people that have perservered through that form of cancer and excelled in life.

http://www.fda.gov/f...s/196_test.htmlThough most nonseminomas are not diagnosed at an early stage, cases confined to the testicle may need no further treatment other than testicle removal. These men must have careful follow-up for at least two years because about 10 percent of stage 1 patients have recurrences, which then are treated with chemotherapy. Stage 2 nonseminoma patients who have had testicle and lymph node removal may also need no further therapy. Some doctors opt for a short course of multidrug chemotherapy for stage 2 patients to reduce the risk of recurrence. Most stage 3 nonseminomas can be cured with drug combinations.

cbs4boston.comCBS4 has learned for the second time in recent months, another young athlete is in a major medical fight. The Boston Bruins' first-round pick Phil Kessel has testicular cancer.
Sources say Kessel is currently at Mass. General Hospital and was due to undergo surgery.
Kessel is said to be in good spirits. He was the Bruins' number one pick and fifth overall in the NHL.
Testicular cancer usually occurs in young men and can be treated and often cured, according to the American Cancer Society.
Each year, about 8,000 men are diagnosed. This is one of the most curable forms of cancer.
A man's risk of getting this cancer in his lifetime is about one in 300, according to specialists.
Another Boston athlete, Red Sox pitcher Jon Lester, was also diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. He is currently in remission from Lymphoma and is expected to be at spring training in February.

It depends on what type of testicular cancer he might have, and how far it has advanced (if that's what he has), but the odds are good.

You have to think that as a 19 year old in great shape, it only increases his odds of recovery from a form of cancer that already has a high recovery rate, relatively speaking.
Another fact that comes into play here is that he is financially secure and he will be receiving the best treatment money can buy.
I think we'll be hearing from Phil again sooner than we think.

Hopefully, they got into the hospital as soon as the symptoms first popped up and really took care of this thing as quickly as it sounds.

Not to be heartless, but will he play again this season, or is he done? And who in Providence will be called up to replace him? Pelletier, versteeg, Krejci, or Karsums I bet, with my early money on Pelletier...
Regardless, this is a big blow to the Boston Bruins, and I hope Phil's development won't be curbed by this awful ailment.

I read earlier today in the globes site that yan statsny was being called up, but that info has now dissapeared.

I'm sure every case is different. I don't have any expertise, but if you go back and look at Mike Lowell and John Kruk, they didn't seem to miss all that much time. I'd bet if Kessel misses the rest of the year, it's just as a precaution and he comes back stronger in 07-08 (much like the rest of the team should).

AKA The New OHL Open Forum AKA the NOOF
It's pretty much the underground be-all and end-all of the Ontario Hockey League. In fact, a number of stories are broken on the NOOF and it's become a source for many OHL beat reporters
There was an interesting thread in their lounge, re. Stephen Colbert picking up the Saginaw Spirit as his team and reporting on them in the Colbert Report.

Assuming Kessel's was found early enough (and it sounds like it has), he should be able to play again this year.

Thoughts and prayers. Testicular CA is very treatable provided it was caught early and hasn't metastisized. Let's hope that's the case. Like Lester, I'll worry about the kid surviving first then worry about his comeback.

Awesome news. This whole situation must have been very sobering for him. I hope he comes back soon and continues to do what he loves to do.

Also interesting to hear that he hasn't felt good for two months. If what we've been watching is the Phil Kessel that doesn't feel good, I can't wait to see the Phil Kessel that's 100%.

Judge said that once Kessel concludes his playing career, he could go into medicine, citing the accuracy with which he felt the small lump in his right testicle.
"It could have been picked up," Judge said of Kessel's cancer during preseason medical exams. "But I'll tell you, it's one of the smaller testicular cancers that you can palpate with your own hand. Phil may have a medical career when he's done. It was very small. It could easily have been missed as well. If it had been a bit bigger -- half a centimeter -- then it's much easier to pick up. Something this small may not have been felt."
Per the Globe. i'm sure he was just checking himself for cancer when he found it
Never the less good news to hear he's alright even if they removed righty.

Any of our list doctors in the house? Would a barely noticeable cancer like Kessel's cause any symptoms?Echo the 'great news' comments... plus he said he was playing really fatigued all season... oh baby.

Kessel, working out in Wilmington with strength and conditioning coach John Whitesides, skated for the first time yesterday and was scheduled to be on the ice again today. Kessel started with off-ice workouts on Wednesday, lifting weights and running on a treadmill.
"Still limited on some things, but could do most things," Lewis said. "We're just happy to hear he's on the ice and feeling good."
Great news

“He’s skating, he feels good, he’s doing well,” said Bruins coach Dave Lewis. “We’ll find out when we get back if he’s going to be able to practice with us, whether he’s ready to have a full practice with the team.”
General manager Peter Chiarelli, who is headed to the world junior tournament in Sweden, said recently there was a slight chance Kessel might play Thursday.
This was news to Lewis. “We’ve never discussed that. I don’t know how he could miss that much hockey, practice once with the team and then play.”

If they're talking about him playing Thursday I would put money on him playing two weeks from Thursday.
Pardon me, but.... YESSSS!!! I should be at this game, and let me tell you, I will be a' yellin' for our boy Phil. Just great great news...
I think we could really see a point explosion from Thrill, considering his comments about how he felt before (and how similar cases reflected that fatigue). Im going to just throw it out there and say he'll get a point a game.
