Tavarez' numbers as a starter (w/tonights 8 innings included)

5 Starts: 27.2 IP, 28H, 13ER, 16K-10BB

2-0, 4.23 (I'm giving him the W tonight a little early)

*We've won 4 out of the 5 games.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Suggest you exclude the 1st start ( 3 ER, 3 IP) since this was a stretch out exercise more than anything.

It might be in the best interest of the Sox to get Loretta the most at bats to show him off to other teams. You know the whole arb deal.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Could be, but I doubt it. Mark Loretta is a known commodity--608 and now 609 AB will not change his perceived value.

However, is it possible that the team will ditch Pena, Cora and Hinske and stick with Loretta as a backup at 1B and a potential replacement for Pedroia if Pedroia continues to bat under 200 through June of '07? I would rather Loretta than a combo of Cora and Hinske.

~~~Great to see the smiles from Tavarez and his teammates. He's quite entertaining. The replay of the final DP shows JT saying that's one and two then the fist pump!
I don't remember seeing him smile before. I actually noticed that he's only very scary looking when he smiles as opposed to his normal horrifically scary.
I sort of wonder what the mindset of Tavarez is when he knows he's going to be starting a game, compared to not having a clue when he's going to pitch? Also, maybe the prep work of starting versus relieving is just easier for Tavarez to handle...
Either way, this is the kind of Julian I want coming out of the bullpen in the 6th and 7th next year.
Then it would unfold like this:
4 Starts: 25.2 IP, 24H, 10ER, 13K, 7BB... 2-0, 3.51 ERA.
Julian very very happy splashing around in dirty watah !
Way to go JT, Mr Low K/BB ratio, Mr Low WHIP, Mr High ERA, and Mr not so good K/9 ... Senor Loco.
Your avatar ranks up there on the list of all time worst...
Right up there with the left side view of the somewhat overweight dude sitting naked at his computer.
If I didn't know better, I would think your avatar picture was taken in a Havanna bathhouse.
No matter how you look at JT's numbers, no matter what starts you include or exclude, his K/9 and K/BB rates just aren't that good. He's a sinkerballer, so maybe he could survive without striking guys out. And, I don't object to him being on the depth chart at starter next year, but his role out of ST should be in the bullpen. Question, if you could start Wake, Beckett, Paps, Schilling, or Tavarez for one game, would any of you not have Tavarez as your last choice. Assuming we're going to go out and get at least one starter this offseason, which we need to do, I see no way that JT for the 2007 rotation should even be mentioned.
Wow, JT's downright frisky lately, huh? It looks like Dr. Tavarez is gonna pitch at least into the 7th. Not bad.
Funny; according to my count, there's been a whole 6 posts in this game thread from non-lurkers. It almost feels like we're the September callups and we're auditioning for spots on next year's team.
Yeah, except that an "Augusta Greenjackets assignment" is in the cards for most of us.
~~~JT very engaging in the post game interview. Starts off by thanking Tito, Dave and Nip for the chance to start. Says he probably will not be a starter next year when everyone is back but hopes they remember him as an option when needed. Thanks Julian for making the game so much fun!

With dissertation crap to deal with here at UF I have been limited to lurker status for the last few weeks in spite of the door being open to post. While I'm pumping out 400 pages on telecom regulation helping the game threads add a page from the recent lowly totals seems futile.

I even had to skip the UF-Tenn game last Saturday and the MNF game in JAX... I need to adjust my priorities... or did I? An intervention may be in order.

Regardless, I've continued to watch the Sox on DTV EI (and not post) with an eye towards next season while enjoying each game on its own merits. There is plenty of work for the FO to do in order to repair much of the self-inflicted damage this team has had to endure.

Tonight (and quite a few recent games) have been fun... JT sacked up and threw a gem. This team didn't quit on each other over the last month... and that's a key for me in terms of the Tito talk. Let's keep the best parts and find a starter (or 2), a bench and some depth for the pen. The finger is pointing at you Theo! It's already documented as a Waterbury, CT guy that I have a big Dave Wallace bias. Just look at the staff from last year. Without the best starter and reliever he still "managed" a staff into the post season.

Sleep well Nation and Go Gators!

Did anyone just hear J.T. talking to Tina Cervasio? He is one of the funniest interviews in a long time. ;) She didn't even bother trying not to laugh.

I mentioned my skeptisim about JT earlier, but his numbers over his past 4 starts are what they are. While averaging just over 6 1/3 IPs, he's posted a 3.25 ERA, a 1.2 WHIP, a 4.5 K/9, and a 1.85/1 K/BB. Oh yeah, he's 2-0 and the Team's 3-1.

If he were younger, there'd be plenty of folks talking about his Cy Young chances next year.

I like groundball pitchers with Gonzo and Lowell on the left side. Pedroia, of course, got eaten up by the turf on that one generous non-error, or else JT might have a shutout!

Even if they decide to go with Tavarez in the BP next year, his value has increased an order of magnitude now that we know he can start in the event of an emergency. We have been pretty much in a state of emergency with the starting rotation all year, resulting in the Sox having to go with rejects by sub-500 teams. If this experiment had been made in June or July we might still be in the hunt for the wild card (assuming Tavarez could keep it up). I remember someone who had called up on one of the WEEI sport show (not me) suggesting Tavarez as a possible solution for starter when Wakefield got hurt and he was laughed off the air. I guess we valued Tavarez performance out of the pen too much to try it as anything other than an act of desperation. The tragic loss of Lester and trading of Wells, and the loss of Schilling for a few starts despite the return of Wakefield allowed the execution of a desperation measure. One could argue now that the time to have been desperate was when the season still had some meaning and the kids were doing Ok in the pen. Hindsight is a nice thing to have. Looking forward, Tavarez now has value for 2007.
