We need one of these.

With everything that's happened this season, David Ortiz could still make Red Sox history, and that is exciting to me.

It's a good pitching matchup, and I'd like to see Beckett throw a gem.

Go Sox, win tonight.

Here's to you, Papi. The heart, soul, and face of this team. A bit off of game thread topic, but Theo asked how the Nation would react to an 85 win team? The implicit notion in that question was that the team may need to drop down to that level to rebuild consistently back up to 95-100 wins and contend. Well, Theo, we got our 85 win team more or less. How many here feel confident that the result next year will be 95-100 wins?

Well lets face it without the injuries we have at least 90 wins right now...So I think we are close enough if we make some good pitching moves and maybe a real solid #5 hitter we are'nt that far away....

I had a thought today looking at the 81 -71 record.....Aside from the injuries helping to lose games......How many games did TITO piss away with some of his half assed lineups and the "Season is a Marathon" thought process??????? when we we're healthy

Had to be at least a half dozen or so...Take 6 plus the last Tampa series plus the first KC series....games we had to win...Add that up as a Ws and we are in the hunt still...

I am certainly not ready to think that they will do so little this offseason that they will not be back to a 95 win team next year. Seriously, this team won 95 games last year with a rotation of Clement, Wakefield, Wells, Arroyo & "other" with little contribution from Schilling, and a Bullpen that saw Timlin closing for a good part of the year. Granted this year has been downright painful to watch since the MFY series in August but lets be honest here. They will make moves to improve the team this off season. Coco is bound to get better (Johnny Damon had a similar hiccup during his brief stay in Oakland), Youks proved he can get on base and produce as well as Mueller, Ortiz is Ortiz, Manny is Manny, Wily Mo can hit, Papelbon proved he more than belongs. There are a lot of reasons to be hopeful going forward. [/rant]

On that note ... congrats Papi. Hope you break the record when I'm there in Section 115 next Tuesday or Wednesday, but feel free to hit one any time your Papi-ness feels the need.

Hows the line go....It is better to be silent and be thought of a moron, then to open your mouth and remove all doubt...

IMO there must be few things in life worse than....A. being an asshole and not knowing it....B..Not being smart enough to realize you are a fucking dumbass....

While I don't cast anything bad his way..but how Ironic would it be if he lost all his money one way or another by the time he is 45....

WOW!! I gotta admit, with all the sorrow that has been this last month of Red Sox baseball, that really did feel good to read and laugh about. I feel bad for A-rod for moments occasionally, until he makes statements about others being jealous that he is good looking. =) But stupid comments aren't reserved only for MFYs. I was pretty disappointed with Papi's statement about the MVP. As much as I hope he wins it, I admit that the teams drop-off at the end of this season has pretty much killed his chances and I dont like it, but I understand. And dont go making comments like "Let's see you do that in THIS line-up" type of quotes. Im not upset with the guy... Ill love him as long as he doesnt ever play for the MFYs, but lets keep an open opinion on the stupid statements made.

I thought it just showed there are no stuctural damages....He still has tendonitis...

As for Papi he has earned the right to say something on his mind....especially how he has gotten screwed 6 ways to Sunday in the MVP voting....

QUOTE:"I was pretty disappointed with Papi's statement about the MVP."

I think Edes has explained this fairly well: Ortiz acknowledged he had no chance at MVP, and when prodded, said that Jeter, while enormously talented, is lucky not to find himself in Ortiz' position: being walked because, with Manny out, there is not a series of big boppers behind him to frighten the pitchers. Like all quotes from famous people repeated ad infinitum out of context, it made Ortiz seem whiny, but I see it as merely candid, and he will learn in future to go the "no comment" route, and we will miss his candor.

I completely understand your point. But this happens to almost everyone in the league. Ive seen infinate statements reported by the media where the athlete was prodded repeatedly how they felt about a certain subject and they just responded honestly, and weren't at all whining about it. But the media puts a spin on it to get a response. They dont care about how it makes that player look. But the simple thing is, he said...

"They're talking about [Derek] Jeter a lot, right? He's done a great job, but Jeter is not a 40-homer hitter or an RBI guy. It doesn't matter how much you've done for your ballclub, the bottom line is, the guy who hits 40 home runs and knocks in 100, that's the guy you know helped your team win games."

"Don't get me wrong, he's a great player but he's got a lot of guys in that lineup. Top to bottom, you've got a guy who can hurt you. Come hit in this lineup, see how good you can be."

Im not gonna go on about this all night, I just wanted to point out that if a less liked player in the league or ANY MFY said something even remotely like this, we'd be ranting about it for a month about how much of a whiny baby he is, etc. etc.

All I ask is that we try to hold our own guys to the same standard even if they are the most liked player in this town.

End of argument.

per mlb.com:

Pedroia
Loretta 1B
Ortiz
Lowell
Nixon
Varitek
C. Pena LF
Kapler
Gonzalez

Any thoughts why Nixon and C. Pena to face Santana instead of WMP and Youkilis? Santana has a small reverse split per mlb.com stats, but I'm wondering if there's another rational explanation.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Bad enough to try something wacky, like starting Carlos Pena (1.112 in 18 ABs vs. Santana)? Lefties have done better against Santana this year and Hinske's been hitting lately. Or will we see more of Loretta at first?

Oh, lineup posted while I was writing this. WMP and Youks have minor injuries. I think I'd rather CPena at first and Hinske in the outfield, though.

<{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Tonight's lineups. Note Crisp is out (having his finger checked out by a specialist per Extra Bases on Boston.com) and as a result Krapler is starting in CF with Carlos Pena in LF.....WTF?

Red Sox
1. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
2. Mark Loretta, 1B
3. David Ortiz, DH
4. Mike Lowell, 3B
5. Trot Nixon, RF
6. Jason Varitek, C
7. Carlos Pena, LF
8. Gabe Kapler, CF
9. Alex Gonzalez, SS

SP Josh Beckett

Twins
1. Luis Castillo, 2B
2. Nick Punto, 3B
3. Joe Mauer, C
4. Michael Cuddyer, RF
5. Justin Morneau, 1B
6. Torii Hunter, CF
7. Rondell White, LF
8. Jason Tyner, DH
9. Jason Bartlett, SS

SP Johan Santana

Some Sox have decent numbers vs. Santana including our brand spanking new LF Carlos Pena who has the following line vs. Santana: 8-16, 2HRs and 1 2B.
Tek is 6-13, 1HR, Loretta 3-8, 1 2B and 1HR, and of all people Adrian Gonzalez who is 2-3 off the best picther in the MLB.....

Only Twinkie in the lineup to face Beckett is the corpse of Rondell White who is 2 for 2 with a 2B off Beckett.

All of that said, let's get a WIN tonight and watch Papi break some records while we're at it.

I have no confidence at all - zero, zip, nada - that our No. 5 hitter can even get the ball out of the infield against Santana. Hell, I'll be mildly surprised if he hits a fair ball.

That is hilarious. I haven't laughed that hard since I saw Rios swat Cora's fly ball into the seats.

I haven't laughed that hard since Bubba Crosby ran smack into Sheffield in Game 5 of last year's ALDS against the Angels, knocking the ball out of his glove and the wanks out of the post-season.

Yikes. The mere fact that you have to ask this question depresses me. If someone had told me at the beginning of the year that our #1 most imprtant acquisition in the ongoing AL East arms race would have a 5.00+ ERA at the end of the season(not to mention HRam's success and ROY candidacy and the fact that Anibal Sanchez is the only pitcher in MLB to throw a no-hitter this season) my head may have exploded.
Let's just hope that Beckett can picth up to his potential next year...

History, indeed.

... and he absolutely CRUSHED it.

All the players that have come before him, alll the big blasts at Fenway, all those years... Williams, Yaz, Evans, Manny... and our David is now the one on the top of the heap.

Because the outcome of the game is not important and this player's development is important. He wants this experience. We want him to have it this year. Perhaps he'll be more comfortable next year facing tough lefties.

Santana probably feels he can give Papi a gift and still win.
