We went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. Ellsbury 4-3, Kottaras (DHing tonight) K, Moss K.

Brooks had given up 2 hits and struck out 2 in his two innings of work.

After Brooks gives up back-to-back singles to lead off the 7th, Kyle Jackson comes on. 1st and 2nd, nobody out.

Jackson gets Goleski to fly to center and induces a liner to Bacani - and a flip to De Renne to catch Crowe off second. Double play, inning over, threat over.

Final line on Brooks:

6 IP, 10 H, 4 R, 3 earned, 1 BB, 5 K.
Officially, a quality start. But a bumpy one.

Barry Hertzler, trying to close in place of Edgar Martinez, blows the lead and gives up 2 in the top of the ninth. Akron now leads 6-5.

Hertzler spits the bit and costs Portland the game and quite possibly the series. What a joke. Just thinking about Hertzler makes me sick right now.

Another great game by Brandon Moss (2 dingers) tonight but a tough loss. Winner takes all tomorrow. If nothing else, though, Moss has elevated his game when it counts. I've pretty much had him pegged as a backup big-league outfielder, but if he can hit for the kind of power he's shown over the last month, he could be the Sox right fielder of the future.

I don't know if anyone's ever commented on the Seadogs radio (WBAE) before, but I really enjoy Mike Antonellis as a broadcaster.

In the 9th, man on second and one out, and Todd Claus issued an intentional walk to Trevor Crowe, who eventually scored the winning run. This is Exhibit Z of what a terrible in-game manager Claus is.

For the second consecutive game, the Dogs pen gives up 2 runs in the 9th, and Portland loses 6-5.

Frank Brooks goes 6+ innings, giving up 10 hits (1 HR) and a walk, allowing 4 runs (3 earned) while striking out 5. Kyle Jackson pitched 2 perfect innings, striking out 2. Barry Hertzler pitched the final inning, giving up a hit and 2 walks, allowing 2 runs.

Seadogs top of the order led the way, as George Kottaras, Brandon Moss and Luis Jimenez (2, 3, 4 in the order) each went 2/4; Kottaras with a double, Jimenez with a HR and Moss with 2 HRs. Jacoby Ellsbury went 2/5. Keoni de Renne went 1/3 with a double. Jeremy West went 1/1 as a pinch hitter for de Renne. Dusty Brown went 1/4. Chris Durbin, Brian Myrow and David Bacani each went 0/4.

To be fair, Hertzler's trying to fill some pretty big shoes, and he'd done a good job as a set-up man. I was afraid the loss of EMart was going to really hurt.

The home team has yet to win in this series.

Game Story

Two outs from winning their first Eastern League championship, the Portland Sea Dogs could not celebrate Saturday night.
The Akron Aeros scored twice in the top of the ninth inning and beat Portland 6-5 in Game 4 of the league championship series before 6,187 at Hadlock Field.
Two home runs by Brandon Moss and one by Luis Jimenez were not enough for the Sea Dogs.
Akron's victory tied the series at 2-2, with the deciding game at 1 p.m. today at Hadlock.
"Two very good teams going toe-to-toe," Sea Dogs Manager Todd Claus said. "I guarantee we'll be ready to play."
Akron heads to Game 5 with the momentum of two straight wins. But Portland has something today the Aeros do not: an ace.
While the Sea Dogs will use their top pitcher, Devern Hansack, Akron will be without Adam Miller, the Eastern League pitcher of the year. The Cleveland Indians are shutting him down, the Aeros announced. Miller, Cleveland's No. 1 prospect, has thrown 166 2/3 innings this season.

When Brandon Moss came to bat in the seventh inning Saturday night, it seemed more curtain call than performance. Two home runs already in the bag, a wall-banging catch that grabbed momentum by the throat and yanked it back to the Sea Dogs, an undoubtedly unanimous MVP award to follow, perhaps even a big-league promotion hand-delivered by Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein.
All this on his 23rd birthday.
It seemed, somehow, too perfect.
It was.
