Lead us Lenny
I can tell that we're not in the "Long-Range Plan" strand. On a given day, with luck, Lenny di Nardo could hold the Orioles to 3-4 runs. Please let's NOT count on him for 2007.

That and Loewen had his worst start this season against the Sox.
08/11 - 2.1 IP, 6H, 6R, 2BB, 3K.
If I remember correctly, Loewen beaned someone in that game and couldn't get his s#^t together after that.

For my part, I had to start the school year. What's your excuse, Boston Red Sox? Riduculous number of injuries? Fair enough.
Go Red Sox.

After the lurkers injected some excitement into these game threads, they appear to be back where they were.

Not good for the lurkers. Let's not sink into the apathetic funk we are so quick to attribute to the Sox. Let's make the most of our window of opportunity here. If the games hold no great excitement for you because of remoteness of play-offs, there are certainly plenty of other game observations, individual milestones and grousing which can be posted. The 2004 Sox didn't fold when they were down. Contrary to some popular opinion, I don't think the 2006 Sox (players) are folding either (they are playing their best with what they've got - uninjured). So lurkers - let's not fold before the window closes.
GO SOX - WIN TODAY!!

You know what happened? We fell off a cliff just like the team. Which is my segway to the question...
Is anybody else alarmed at how tired the Boston Red Sox have got the past two years around this time? I realize that there are other factors (injuries to starters, bullpen, etc.) but comments from the players and the level of play separate this team from elite teams right now. What's going on?

From the looks on their faces last night at Camden (at least from my seat at 3rdb) they were passionate. As we should be. Pluck the Birds tonight, boys!

Two singles worth of passion last night ehHear, hear! Remember the fall of 2004? From behind at 3... They didn't give up and these knuckleheads aren't either. They'e playing what's dealt to them and their frustration is showing, too.

You might as well streak around the outfield while you're at it. They don't have a Fenway jail though, do they, like the Eagles have?Anybody else considering going pantsless for this game?

No doubt about it this year. Last year the Sox did finish up 18-13 (.580), so I don't think the year to year connection is valid.
My biggest concern with this team is the string of disastrous personnel moves made over the past year. This isn't to say that we would've had a significantly better record w/o those trades (injuries have wrecked the Sox), but we certainly have less value, talent, and more payroll heading into next year.
I'd also like to randomly mention it's a myth about Bronson Arroyo being hit harder the 2nd/3rd time around the league. Analysis of his game logs from 04, 05, and 06 will reveal it's pretty much 50/50 whether or not he pitches worse in subsequent meetings with teams. In fact, some of his worst performances have been in his initial appearance against a team.
There. Got that off my chest

I went to plenty of games when Scott Cooper (he of the .265/.337/.386/.723 career stats) was our big, two-time All Star. I was never apathetic then. And I'm not apathetic now that we have a damn good bunch of players who still seem to care despite a season of Shakespearean tragedies (or tragi-comedies). Be a fan.
And BTW
WIN tonight MoFos!!!!!!
..THAT guy!...Scott Cooper was a TWO-TIME allstar!..that musta been the heavy imbibe'in days for WT ..cannot recollect that...once independently confirmed WT is so back on the bandwagon...Look if Scoot Cooper was two-time allstar THEN anything and we mean anything is possible.
WIN!

A very large area of rain has passed over Baltimore in the last few hours, but it looks to be clear to the south and west.
The official forecast is:
---
Cloudy with a 40 percent chance of showers through early this evening...then mostly cloudy overnight. Lows in the mid 60s. East winds 5 to 10 mph...becoming north after midnight.
---
Perhaps they're going to play.

Big Papi needs to get off the mini-schneid and hit a couple of bombs, lefty pitcher or not. Loewen has been pretty good in his last few starts though.Loewen is left handed, Nixon is already in the lineup, and Hinske is Nixon bad against lefties (but without the walks)
Rain delay?

What can we talk about in the meantine? Our feelings, perhaps?...
How about that Matsusake (spelling?) guy? What do people feel is the liklihood of his skills translating to the MLB? I've read his thread, I only ask because A.) I want to know more, more, more, B.) It's a rain delay), and C.) I, too, have been spoiled and would love for the next big ace to come sooner rather than later, assuming it isn't Papelbon...

So far you can pencil in the Schilling farewell tour, Beckett, Wake (more than likely) and after that various shades of grey.
Options? In house? Trade? FA?

I think if we can find a way to have Paps as the fifth starter we'll be doing well. I expect big things out of him, recent setback and all. And if all we're counting on him being is a number five but he lives up to his potential, then we'd have Schilling, New guy, Beckett, Wake, and Papelbon. With Lester maybe contributing much later in the season. I think that could be a good to great staff if things go about as right as they went wrong this year.I got some feelings......that we need some starting pitching next year.

And as much as I like Zito and the Japanese guy, I have a sneaking suspicion they may get a high impact player through trade. Not much to back it up but my gut.

I haven't read anything on the subject. Is Manny out for the year? Shut down? What's the deal with him?

Manny in limbo: Left fielder Manny Ramirez was not in the starting lineup for the third straight game. Ramirez has started just seven of the Red Sox's last 21 games because of patella tendinitis in his right knee.
"[The training staff] will tell me when he can play," said Francona. "Rather than me running in there every 10 minutes ... when they say it, we'll put him in there."
Orioles first baseman/designated hitter Kevin Millar, Ramirez's friend and former teammate, continues to kid the slugger during batting practice that he can't win the MVP award if he doesn't play.
Ramirez is hitting .318 with 34 homers and 101 RBIs.

Tito said in the pregame that, basically, he's out for the season. He might play way later if he feels well enough, but he's out for the forseeable future.
... and that was gone.

I came home late last tonight, turned on the Orioles network broadcast just in time to hear the announcers blathering about the Johhny Judas Damon trade being pretty much the single factor leading to our "demise." blah blah blah
But I will hang in. I will post. I will cheer. I don't think I have ever booed.
This team needs us. (Of course we need some wins, too.)
WIN!

Youks hit the ball that wasn't a HR. Ended up a double. MOved to third on a GB by Loretta and scored on an error by Roberts on a ball hit by Papi

Posted 14 September 2006 - 06:42 PM
Youkilis, double, Loretta moved him to 3rd on a GO, Ortiz reached on error, Youk scored, WMP K, Lowell GO. 1-0 Sox.Emm, for those of us actually using the game thread to follow the game.

This is a game thread, right? Where ridiculous notions are somewhat more tolerated? Well, get a load of this...does MDC have the potential to close? He's certainly been better than Hansen this year.I just can't see the FO putting Paps in the rotation absent a viable alternative as closer. The market is nicole ritchie thin out there and we don't have an in house option. The huge x-factor is his arm condition. I keep reading that regular work e.g. every fifth day will help his shoulder condition. If that's the case, our hand gets forced and we look around to see what's available. In a perfect world, I would like to see Paps as closer next year with MDC in the 7th and Hansen in the 8th grooming to be future closer.
I know it hasn't worked out yet, but I'm kind of a fan of throwing it against the wall to see what sticks. Has to work sometime right? See how Foulke feels after this season, if he has a chance of coming back strong and healthy, keep him in the mix (or he'll keep himself in the mix, I suppose). Go after another potential closer, be it Gagne, Baez or both. Is it so unreasonable to hope that one of Foulke, Gagne/Baez, MDC, Hansen, Corey, Breslow, or all could close at some point?
...this is a game thread, after all...
