Position: 2B
Age: 18
Born: February 21, 1988
Taiwan
Height: 6-2
Weight: 170
Bats: Left
Throws: Right
Drafted: Not drafted
How Acquired: International Free Agent (2006)

The SoSH Wiki has the basics on the guy.

They may try him at SS at some point, but thus far he has played only 2B for the GCL Sox and Lowell. Scouting reports indicate his fielding is behind his hitting thus far.

I saw his 8/29 game in Vermont. He has a very nice swing – his feet were a bit fidgety in the box, but his hands were quiet and he had a number of nice cuts – one of which resulted in a long HR to RF. It’s only 346 to RF where it went out, but it was long gone, I’d guess only Fenway, Safeco & Comerica among AL parks would’ve held this one. A loogy type made him look bad in 1 AB, but he was not at all overmatched against a 95mph lefty in his last AB, hitting a couple of sharp fouls before hitting a 2-hopper to 2B.

He didn’t make a lasting impression on me one way or the other in the field at 2B, he got to everything he should’ve but nothing spectacular. He did make a nice turn on a DP with the runner sliding in hard – jumped to avoid the runner and had just enough on the throw to get the out at 1B.

Here’s his gamelog for Lowell (edit - now complete), and I’ll try to go through the boxes and compile a GCL gamelog for him soon.

He posted a .287/.318/.410 line in 33 games for the GCL Red Sox before his promotion. He has walked only 7 times in 168 minor league AB's, so doesn't appear to be the most patient hitter thus far in his brief career.

Here's his GCL Gamelog. I included the playoff games, so the final line doesn't match the regular season totals in the first post. All games are at 2B unless otherwise noted. I'll correct the first post to reflect that he has not played any SS yet - something I had skimmed in an article indicated he had played some SS, but according to the GCL boxes, he did not.

His final minor league stat line can be found here. The stats listed there do not include his 0-for-10 with one walk performance in the GCL playoffs.

Jon Deeble, the Red Sox Pac-Rim Coordinator had this to say about Chih-Hsien Chiang.

He was the best hitter in Asia as a 17-year-old. He's got a chance to play in the big leagues, for sure.

2 doubles for Chiang tonight. He has been a hitting machine so far in Greenville. Would like to see him walk more but he is great at making contact.

Here's Chiang's gamelog thus far - he was promoted to Greenville on May 5 to replace Argenis Diaz who hurt his shoulder. All games are at 2B thus far. He's cooled off a bit after a strong start, and has yet to see a pitch he doesn't like. In the notes - I've only noted DP's where he was the pivot - not where he fed the SS.

I'll update this semi-regularly - sorry for the lag, I only realized he'd been activated this weekend. Actually - I should probably move this to the Wiki at some point - this will just be clutter in the thread as it gets much longer.

RotoWorld had an update on Chiang today....

Chih-Hsien Chiang went 3-for-4 with a homer, a triple and five RBI for low Single-A Greenville on Thursday.
Chiang, a 19-year-old signed out of Taiwan last year, is batting .309/.323/.489 in 94 at-bats. The left-handed hitter has impressive power potential for a second baseman. If he can stay at the position, he could develop into one of the Red Sox's top prospects over the next couple of years.

Just updated his gamelog thru the 24th. He missed a few games early in the month after hurting himself running the bases, but has played every game since the 12th. He's still hitting, and he's started drawing walks at a good clip too - after only 2 BB in his first 117 AB, he has 7 BB in 37 AB since then.

Just chipping in here:

After going 3-4 last night with a run and RBI Chiang has hit safely in 6 consecutive games (KOW). He has a 6:1 K:BB rate and only one XBH in that time. But I'll take it.

YTD: .332 | .458 | .790

Safe to say a split is starting to develop in 190 ABs: OPS vs. LHP: .647 | OPS vs. RHP: .842

Been a long time since this guy has been updated.

After finishing with a .701 OPS in Greenville last year Chiang has had an up and down season in Lancaster.

193 AB's:

.264/.311/.394

11 2b's
4 HR's

37 SO
13 BB

Chiang has a reverse split this season after struggling against lefties in 2007.

vs Lefty: .807 (54 Ab's)
vs Righty: .665

He can't hit a lick outside of Lancaster.
Home: .767
Away: .649

He's still only 20 but it would be more encouraging if he had a better OBP.

243 AB's:

.272/.314/.403

45K
15BB

Last 10 games:

Chiang is hitting .233 with 8K and 1BB. Needless to say, he has been struggling.

Splits:

vs. Lefty: .717 OPS
vs. Righty: .718

Home: .791
Away: .641

He still can't hit away from Lancaster.

Chiang with a home run! It looks like he hit a 79 MPH change-up that was belt high, just a pure meatball.

Kevin Thomas takes a look:

QUOTE
While the Dodgers and Yankees are popular in Taiwan, Boston was Chiang's favorite team. He gave no reason for his preference but when it came time to sign a professional contract, Chiang chose the Sox.

Originally a middle infielder, Chiang was moved to the outfield last year.

He played the past two seasons in advanced Class A, batting .284 with a total of 15 home runs 97 RBI.

Chiang is off to a 3-for-27 start with the Sea Dogs, but he will get chances to turn that around. The Red Sox want him to get lots of at-bats, so when he is not in the outfield, he will likely be Portland's designated hitter.

Chiang has flown under the radar, but he's having a pretty nice season in Portland. After a dismal start in 2010, he really turned things around in the second half and through two months of 2011, he's showing some nice pop. .295/.343/.566 through 129 ABs, though the 9/28 BB/K isn't pretty.

Jeezum Chiang is on fire, 8 for his last 18 with 4 HRs and a triple, bringing his season OPS up to .988, after a .604 April.
He's at 10 HRs so far this year, after hitting his career high of 11 last year. Good to see him find his power stroke. Of course he's another LHH outfielder. But he's got an .845 OPS against lefties this year, so that's something.

He was hitting .156 / .229 / .250 in 35 PA on April 26. In 135 PA since, he's hit .349 / .385 / .746.

In fact, check this out:

How Hot Can You Get?
Date PA BA OBP SA OPS
to 4/26 35 .156 .229 .250 .479
4/27-5/14 50 .277 .320 .511 .831
5/18-5/26 26 .304 .346 .652 .998
5/27-6/2 33 .419 .455 .839 1.294
6/3-6/9 26 .440 .462 1.160 1.622

Now, there's one big-time cheat here in terms of showing steady improvement, because the 50 PA from 4/27 to 5/14 is actually 31 PA (through May 7) at .400 / .419 / .767, followed by a week where he went 1-17, 2 BB. But I couldn't resist combining the two stretches.

Chiang just doesn't stop hitting.

April: 40 ABs, .225/.279/.325, 3/11 BB/K

May: 84 ABs, .310/.352/.655, 5/17 BB/K

June: 97 ABs, .320/.391/.680, 10/17 BB/K

July: 36 ABs, .472/.513/.778, 2/5 BB/K

Though July 8, his season line is .323/.378/.630 in 257 ABs with 29 doubles, 14 HRs, 4 triples, and 20/50 BB/K.

Looking back when I was updating this kid in 2008, I frankly shocked how well he has done after appearing like he couldn't hit much outside of Lancaster for the two seasons after. I thought this guy was on the path of Chia-Chu Chen. Good for him though, looking forward to the inevitable promotion.

A few things to note:
His ISO is a ridiculous .307, which is near 2010 Jose Bautista levels. He also has a BABIP of .354, a career high (the next closest being .333 in Lancaster).

According to a recent Alex Speier article, Chiang has battled diabetes throughout his time in the US and this is his first season playing with his blood sugar thoroughly under control. It's a very good overall piece on him and well worth reading.

Based on this new information, I find myself more fully buying into Chiang's season. I was already starting to be sold on his breakout being real but this definitely helps remove some of the lingering doubts.

He's pretty much demanding a promotion at this point.

Any news on how his defense has come around? Is he going to be able to be anything more than a below average/average left fielder?

Why aren't we talking more about Chih-Hsien Chiang?

He now has a 1.053 OPS. He is 23 years old in AA. We have an explanation for the previous offensive struggles. Why isn't there more excitement about him?

Just because we aren't talking about him all the time doesn't mean we don't like him. I know a lot of us want to see him promoted.

With Lars gone, is it time to get Chiang some reps at 1B in addition to the outfield? I'm not advocating a position switch, but Chiang was originally a 2B and being comfortable at 1B in addition to the outfield corners would give him one more path to MLB playing time. I'd love to see him get the promotion to AAA to fill the vacant spot as well.

In the immortal words of Jimi Williams, "He plays for Seattle. You better ask them." Too bad Kuroda and Harden's demise as trade targets lowered the supply of starting pitching and perhaps increased the cost of Bedard.

Well, Seattle has openings for him as an everyday player in the outfield or at DH, so there really isn't any reason to try to give him a 1B mitt. It was a suggestion based around the fact that he has infield experience and we were trading away our 1B depth. It clearly is no longer relevant.

Either way, congrats to Chiang. I hate to see him go, but this move should help out his career, at least in the short run. I wouldn't be surprised to see him get called up now or in September and be given a chance to compete for a full time job next spring. Best of luck to him. It's been a wild ride this year watching him rise from a guy who couldn't crack the organizations top 60 (at least via SoxProspects) to many of us bemoaning his loss in this trade. Hopefully the Angels and Rangers live to regret us making this trade.
