Gabbard makes his second ML start tonight against Loiaza (7-7 5.12 ERA)

Per Redsox.com regarding the pitching matchup:

BOS: LHP Kason Gabbard (0-2, 3.38 ERA)
The rookie left-hander will fill in for the ailing Lester and make his second Major League start. Gabbard started against the Mariners on July 22, giving up eight hits and two earned runs over 5 1/3 innings in a tough-luck loss. He has pitched twice in relief, giving up a run over 2 2/3 innings.

OAK: RHP Esteban Loaiza (7-7, 5.12 ERA)
In his last start, Loaiza threw the sixth complete-game shutout of his career with a four-hit whitewashing of the Blue Jays. He needed just 103 pitches to complete his gem, and at one point retired 15 consecutive batters. The right-hander is 3-0 with a 1.76 ERA in his last five starts, and has recorded 27 strikeouts against just three walks in that span. He is 3-2 with a 4.76 ERA in 10 career appearances against Boston.

Some Notes:

- Lester was scratched from tonight's start with a sore back (an issue in his last start, a victory, last Wednesday)

- Leftys are hitting .320 against Loiaza, Rightys .272. ERA at home this year is 5.06.

- Loaiza'a last start against Boston came at Fenway 7/13 with the following line:

No Decision 6.34ERA 5.0IP 6H 3ER 6BB 4K's

- Loiaza has struck out 7 in his last two outings (@Kansas City and @Toronto) with a 9 inning effort in the Kansas City match up. (see above)

- Gabbard last started July 22 @ Seattle with the following line:

Loss 3.38 ERA 5.1 IP 8H 2ER 2BB 3K's

- Gabbard also appeared in relief on August 22 @ Anaheim (1.2 IP 3.86 ERA 2H 1ER 1BB 0K) and August 25 @Seattle (1.0 IP 3.38ERA 0H 0ER 0BB 1K)

- The Sox have lost 9 of their last 11 games and 18 of 24 in August.

- Papi is 12 for 28 against Loiaza

Nice job, Maddy.

Our guys against Loaiza

Gabbard is a mystery to A's. Well, we hope so, anyway. It at least appears that there may be a lack of familiarity factor.

Sox Prospects.com on Gabbard.

And of course the SoSH Wiki.

It's a shame that Lester is out, but in the end, due to a lot of circumstances, he was being asked to do more than could have realistically been expected of him. I'm glad that they are being very careful with him. Hopefully the dropoff from Lester to Gabbard will not prove to be too large.

I don't even want to hazard a guess as to what the Sox lineup is going to look like tonight. I'll wait until I see that to get too analytical, but I will say that a lot of scoring would be welcome.

EDIT: Nevermind, was yesterday's lineup. Sorry.

Heading out to the park right now.

The fortunate thing for the Sox is Loaiza just has no real major league stuff, so they aren't really taking a hit for starting Gabbard.

The unfortunate thing is that despite that lack of stuff, he's sporting a 1.77 ERA this month, so he's red hot. 3/27 BB/K ratio as well. I haven't seen him in forever but with those numbers that 84 mph fastball and slurvy slider have got to be no more, replaced by some decent heat. If not, then the Sox *should* kill him.

I would hope that the Boston Red Sox will never put as poor a lineup on the field as they are tonight.
Ever.
C. Crisp CF 1 0 0 0
A. Cora SS 1 0 0 0
M. Loretta DH 1 0 0 0
K. Youkilis LF 0 0 0 0
M. Lowell 3B 0 0 0 0
E. Hinske RF 0 0 0 0
J. Lopez C 0 0 0 0
C. Pena 1B 0 0 0 0
D. Pedroia 2B 0 0 0 0

They are officially worse at every position than they were in 2004. Now I am just complaining and not offering solutions, but seriously...

Have to disagree with regards to Loaiza. His velocity is way up compared to earlier in the year. He is keeping the ball down in the zone and throwing strikes. Getting ahead in the count and throwing the cutter than he came up with in 2003.

They will struggle against him with this lineup. They would struggle against Matt Young with the lineup they have out there tonight.

Great catch by Hinske, I guess he would be a legit option for RF the rest of the way, good to know...
