Baseball Ethics

Tango Tiger's site has a long list of unethical acts throughout baseball history. It's part of a project to try to crowd-source how unethical certain actions are considered to be by the fans.

Beyond that though, it's a pretty interesting list, and shows just how much time, thought, effort and creativity have gone into cheating and gamesmanship throughout baseball history.

Some of my favorite entries:

Potato: "It wasn't a major league game, to be sure, but the bizarre potato story is worth recounting. The Double A Williamsport club was mired 27 games out of first place in an Aug. 31, 1987, game against the Reading Phillies. Rick Lundblade was the runner at third for the Phillies when the enterprising Williamsport backstop, Dave Bresnahan, called time out. He ambled over to the dugout, supposedly to replace his ripped catcher's glove, an act that raised no eyebrows. Then he walked back to his position with a new glove, and, it turned out, a nicely peeled potato hidden on his person.

After catching his pitcher's next offering, Bresnahan chucked the potato far over the third baseman's head out into left field, in what appeared to be a wild pickoff attempt. Lundblade scampered home, only to be tagged out with the game ball by Bresnahan. When the umpiring crew finally figured out what had happened, they ruled that Lundblade had, in fact, scored. They tossed Bresnahan out of the game and fined him $50. Bresnahan was then let go by the Williamsport club, which nonetheless held a special promotion on the last day of the season, admitting any fan with a potato for $1. It seemed all had been forgotten; Bresnahan was brought back to the park by the Williamsport team for the special day and assigned the task of autographing the potatoes."

Cut the corner: "In 1880s and 1890s, many runners would cut the corner from first to third, without touching second, if they thought the lone umpire wasn't looking. They tried to do the same between second and home. This prompted a new rule in 1897, namely that a runner had to touch every base in order.

Note this wonderful anecdote from the classic baseball book, The Glory of Their Times: In the days before the rule was enacted, Cincinnati first baseman Jake Beckley scored from second on a hit to the outfield, although it was unclear if he had stopped at third en route. Umpire Timothy Hurst, a rough-and-tumble brawler himself, ruled that Beckley was out. This was a surprising call, since there had been no play at the plate. Basically, Hurst made the call on general principles. "What do you mean, I'm out?" queried the surprised Beckley. "You big S.O.B. You got here too quick," responded Hurst."

There's quite a variety of others, ranging from horrifying to silly. I found it to be an interesting and thought-provoking list on its own, apart from the ethics project.

PDF Printing Inverse Colors

So I'm having an issue with the colors of a PDF file I'm trying to print. The file is a series of barcodes that appear as black text on a white background. When I print the PDF the white background is black and all of the text is white. This makes the barcodes invalid. This same file prints correctly (black text on white background) from another PC.

I can open another barcode document on my laptop from another vendor which appears on the screen as black text on a white background and it prints correctly.

Something is not working well with this specific PDF and my laptop. Any suggestions on which magical preference/setting I'm missing to get it to print this file correctly and continue to print the other documents correctly?

Your biggest triumph

In contract to your most painful/worst loss, what is your biggest triumph in coaching? Not just a game, but any victory or accomplishment.

Mine is easy. I coached an 8th grade boys travel team this past season, it was a B team (top 10 players selected to A, next 10 to B). A couple kids were very disappointed to be on the B team, but I could tell we would have a very successful season. They were 4-12 the previous season, but a couple kids dropped from A to B (including my son) and we had one new player. We averaged 63 points/game, a ton for an 8th grade team around here and went 13-3 in the regular season, 16-4 overall, losing the championship game to a team from a town half our size, with only one team (i.e. really an A team) by 5 points.

None of the wins or even the season in whole, were my biggest triumph, that came with the Thank You card from the players. There was a player who, going into the season, I knew would be my biggest challenge, attention issues, very emotional, parents divorced about year ago, argued with teammates, received several technical fouls the year before, was very concerned with his own points scored, with a father that was very concerned with his points scored etc. I worked a lot with him, not just on basketball, but on controlling his emotions, not worrying about the things he couldn't control (officials, people in the stands etc), instead focusing on what he can control (effort, team work, etc). He had an outstanding season. On the thank you card, he wrote: "Coach, thank you for everything you did for us, you have helped me become a better basketball player and most importantly a better person."

I'll remember that for a long time.

Lotto odds

Following wins by the Celtics and Lakers last night, there is a bit of separation between the three worst teams (Milwaukee, Philly and Orlando) and the next four teams (Boston, Utah, Sacramento, LAL) who are all within one loss of each other.

Here is the NBA draft lottery process:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_draft_lottery#Process

It is worth noting that in 83% of all possible scenarios the 4th seed will get a pick in the top 5. Meanwhile 82% of the time the 7th seed will pick 7th or 8th.

Looking at this year's draft, that looks like a serious drop off in talent.

Will Paul Pierce Come Back to Boston?

Paul Pierce wouldn’t mind rejoining the Celtics.

“Yeah, why not? Maybe play for them, maybe work for them,” the forward said Friday after the Nets lost to his former team, 91-84, at TD Garden.

Pierce played 15 seasons with the Celtics, who drafted him in 1998. His contract expires after this season and he’ll be an unrestricted free agent.

He received a warm ovation from the crowd and finished with 10 points in 33 minutes, though emotions weren’t as high as in late January, when he returned to the Garden for the first time since he and Kevin Garnett were traded.

“It’s always emotional when you step into a gym you’ve spent your whole life playing in,” Pierce said. “The tribute last time made it so much more emotional and the cheers. But every time I come into this gym, because I’m always seeing friends and people who have been around all the years, it’s always going to be emotional, because you miss them from knowing them so long.”

I think this is threadworthy. Of course it would be a windfall for the Celtics and Ainge would look like a hero, but is it in the best interests of the Celtics to accept him back?. Of course the huge caveat is no one knows what the makeup of next year's team will actually be. My feeling is I would be happy to have him back if the price is right and he is OK with coming off the bench.

Pats Salary Cap: Looking Ahead to 2015

We all know that the Pats have relatively limited cap space this offseason. What's perhaps less understood is the extant to which our cap picture is currently slated to improve in 2015. This has the potentially to really affect our decision making process this offseason, so I thought it was worth a deeper dive and a little analysis.

As a quick and dirty look, we can start with all players under contract for 2015, cut a couple obvious veterans (Sopoaga, A. Wilson) and disregard a bunch of marginal practice squad fodder who currently have non-guaranteed deals with little to no dead money and very little chance of making the team. Then assume Solder's 2015 option is picked up for about $7M and factor in money to sign the 2014 and 2015 draft/UDFA classes (I'm assuming that seven guys from each class make the final roster for 2015). This leaves us with:

2015 Salary Cap Projection

Name

Base

Prorated

Roster

Workout

Cap

Dead

Cap

That is 30 players under contract plus an estimated fourteen more from the 2014-15 draft/UDFA classes, so about 44 players costing $101M. The 2015 salary cap is projected to be about $140M (not factoring in any team rollover). Put aside $5M for practice squad guys and wiggle room and we're talking about $34M in cap space with only nine spots or so open on the 53 man roster. Obviously some of the guys in the table above won't make the 2015 roster but the dead money will be minimal from most of those cuts. Note too that we could save a further $7M in 2015 by cutting Mankins and that this is in the ballpark of what McCourty's cap hit is likely to be if we extend him. So you could just as well substitute McCourty for Mankins and the number of players and total money committed wouldn't change all that much.

The bottom line is that we really do have a lot of flexibility. Hypothetically, we could definitely sign Talib to a 4/44ish deal that basically guarantees two years, have a palatable hit this in the $6-8M range this year, and knock like a $12M cap charge into 2015 without too much of a problem. Then the third year is either a chunk of dead money or another cap hit in the same range. Or we could conserve the space and be well positioned to be major players in free agency in 2015. The overall point is that the prospect of paying the "market rate" for Talib or Edelman or whoever needs to be seen in light of the future cap picture, not just in terms of how our cap looks for 2014.

Do I Need a PC?

So my Laptop just gave out, and as I was looking for a replacement I started to wonder if I even need one going forward. A year and a half ago I changed my phone to a Note 2 and I have loved everyone about the Android universe. Currently, I use my phone about 90% of the time I need a device, and the only thing that has me attached to a PC is that I'm getting my Masters in Education and have to spend a few hours a week writing papers or making lesson plans. I know that Android Tablets are capable of having Bluetooth mice and keyboards attached, but is it possible to use them as a word processing device that can handle APA formatting?

Ground Control

Many people here are familiar with the work of Kevin Goldstein and Mike Fast and are aware that they now work for the Astros. There was an article in the Houston Chronicle on other hires that the Astros have made and on the new system, that they call Ground Control, they have designed and built from the ground up that has all of the information on scouting, contracts, player development etc. that all of their baseball people have access to on a compartmentalized basis. They use the system to help them make all of their baseball decisions.

When the Astros hired general manager Jeff Luhnow in December 2011, he had a 25-page plan he presented to owner Jim Crane. In it were details for this website - a complex, built-from-scratch database - that would be fully tailored to every one of the club's needs.

Since senior technical architect Ryan Hallahan was hired in February 2012, the database has become just about the most useful baseball tool available. Some features, like a trade analyzer, seem ripped straight from a video game.

It's one of the coolest toys the public will never play with.

Steve Nash -- The Finish Line

Steve Nash is letting happen (and I think overseeing at some level, he's sort of a wannabe film-maker working with his cousin if i understand correctly. I guess part of the reason he wanted to finish his career in L.A.) a documentary about his final push to be part of the NBA. Nash has always been a rare type -- looks like one of us, talks like one of us, yet is a great athlete (not like us). He also has that modest Canadian way of expressing himself, which is quite endearing.

It occurs to me watching the two mini-episodes that are already up that one of the fascinations of sports is that we see our own life compressed -- I'm depressed at turning 50 and thinking I only have 15 or so years left of my career to make an impact. When we watch athletes it's not just the ways in which games and seasons mimic the struggle of life, but that careers mimic our own lives but in an incredibly condensed manner. Someone like Nash is depressed about his career ending at 40ish (and he's one of the few that will go on to do interesting things after he retires from sport), which I find intense.

Anyway, worth watching:
episode 1: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-f ... episode-1/

episode 2: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-f ... provision/

not sure how many episodes there will be total.

"It's almost going to be a game-time decision. I think he has his viewpoints on it and where his confidence is," manager John Farrell said this morning. "He hasn't told me that he's eliminating switch hitting."

Victorino is a natural righthanded hitter who learned to switch hit in 2002 when he was in the minors. He has been a better hitter righthanded over the course of his career.

"The right side has always been his strong side," Farrell said. "I think last year his production against righthanded pitching probably has enabled him to be a little bit more open-minded to getting the majority of at-bats from that side of the plate."

Farrell said the Red Sox support the idea.

"We want the most productive player," he said. "If that's what it lends to, we'd be perfectly fine with it if that's what he opts to do."

Batting righthanded Victorino hit a modest .216 in the postseason but drove in 12 runs over 14 games. He had big hits in Game 6 of the ALCS and Game 6 of the World Series.

"You look at the approach at the plate and the overall production and the confidence and you tend to think that has a chance to [continue]," Farrell said. "Time will tell."

Victorino has been held out of games so far for several reasons. He is recovering from surgery on his right thumb and has been doing extra work to strengthen groin muscles that gave him problems last season.

"Hopefully by sometime early this coming week he will be on the field," Farrell said. "All his on-field work has been free, no issues. That's been encouraging."

I think this would be a good decision by Victorino. Hopefully he continues to have the same success he had last season, hitting from that side of the plate

A Not so Funny Thing Happened on My Trip Through Entourage for iMac

Perplexing Situation with Microsoft Entourage for iMac

I have encountered an odd and to date unanswerable issue with MS Entourage for iMac.

First, the basics up front:

Hardware:

Model Name: iMac

Model Identifier: iMac9,1

Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo

Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz

Number Of Processors: 1

Total Number Of Cores: 2

L2 Cache: 6 MB

Memory: 2 GB

Bus Speed: 1.07 GHz DDR3

Boot ROM Version: IM91.008D.B08

SMC Version (system): 1.44f0

OS: OS X 10.6.8

Software: Microsoft Office 2008 for iMac

Email Service Provider: Cox

Context of Problem Development: I accepted a job in early December 2013 that requires me to work at a remote location away from home. In order to permit both my wife and I to read emails separately, I set up a Gmail account and established a rule forwarding all incoming email from my home account to my Gmail account. I did NOT alternatively elect to check the option/box to save a copy of all messages to the Cox email server, which would have permitted both my wife and I to independently access the same email and not have them removed from the server if/when my wife logged on first and downloaded to the local/home machine.

The Problem: Everything was running smoothly until about mid-January, when I stopped receiving forwarded emails. This was followed shortly by a call from my wife saying that Entourage was locked up and there was nothing she could do to get it to respond. We attempted unsuccessfully by phone relay and several sessions with her and Cox, Apple, and Microsoft to resolve the problem. I suspect the problem at the outset was an email being forwarded that somehow got "stuck" and backed up the remaining emails in queue. But the problem has now transitioned to something even more sinister and frustrating.

As an interim measure until I returned for a weekend visit, we both began accessing via webmail, and this time DID check the box to save a copy of all email to the server.

Now, I have returned home and am now able to sit at my machine and troubleshoot directly (I will add that we even tried using JoinMe so that I could take remote control of the machine to troubleshoot but that did not work out well).

I again spent time with Cox, Apple and Microsoft and have yet to identify a fix. Here are the symptoms with which I am left:

I am able to log in to my Cox email account via Webmail. I confirmed with the Cox Tech Rep that the same credentials are to be used when logging into Entourage through the direct server connection.

After taking the actions listed below, I open Entourage and can view the folders, selected folder (inbox usually), and the preview pane. I can navigate to, through, and from emails.

I click on the Send/Receive icon in the upper right. The progress ribbon (horizontal blue and white “barber pole”) in the lower right shows the system attempting to ping the server. The ping fails and a yellow triangle with exclamation point appears, indicating access failure. No dialog box is presented asking for log in.

I click on the Send/Receive a second time but this time am presented with a security credential login dialog box. I enter the Account ID and password that I have used to successfully access webmail, but the systems returns an error of “invalid username and/or password”.

Here are the actions I have taken so far:

I managed to at least get Entourage unlocked and immediately turned off the forwarding and all other rules. In fact, I deleted all rules.

I deleted the 300+ emails that were cued up in my outbox.

I cleared my deleted box (although this isn’t necessarily related to the problem).

Based on information gained from visiting various tech blogs a forums (fora?), such as this: http://hosting.intermedia.net/support/kb/?id=1430, I also:

Deleted and reset keychain passwords.

Searched for and deleted corrupted fonts.

Cycled between activating and deactivating my firewall (no effect).

At the moment, neither the scheduled/automated send/receive setting nor the manual ping return any emails. But I know through Webmail that emails are being received at the server.

Help me choose between two laptops

Due to a mishap with Lenovo Outlet, I'm the proud owner of a 500gb SSD and a 8gb SO-DIMM, so I'd like an upgradable laptop I can put these parts into and make into a good all around machine (some work, some gaming). My criteria:

1. Haswell - I'm commuting a lot so I'd like good battery life, although I don't personally believe i5 vs i7 will be that big a difference for me.
2. Lighter is better - so I'm looking at 14" models mainly
3. Under $1100
4. I can't resell the parts I replace - they're going to a friend of mine.
5. Ships soon - I don't want to wait three weeks for my laptop.

Here are my two candidates so far:
1. Alienware 14 (R2)
http://www.dell.com/us/p/alienware-14/pd.aspx

Pros: I've heard good things about Alienware, CNET likes these models, seems easy to upgrade, has a dedicated video card
Cons: A little heavy (over 6 lbs.)

2. HP Envy Touchsmart
http://www.amazon.com/HP-14-k120us-TouchSmart-Ultrabook-T-Mobile/dp/B00HEAAZL8/ref=sr_1_15?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1394284997&sr=1-15&keywords=hp+laptop

Pros: Light, touchscreen? (is touchscreen is a feature people use on work laptops?)
Cons: I have no idea how good HP/Compaq laptops are these days;the last thing I bought from HP was a LaserJet 4 (which, to be fair, was awesome); hard to find a review of them.

What say you? Feel free to nominate another model, with the caveat that I won't buy Asus, Acer, Lenovo, or MSI. Thanks.

Not sure if I'm just late or if this even deserves a thread, but I was pretty excited to learn that I can listen to a ton of local radio stations using the TuneIn app. The NFL, MLB, and NBA all black out their games on the streaming versions of their radio stations (because they offer them themselves for sale I assume), but the NHL does not, so as long as you know your team's home station you can listen.

The Miami Marlins, who won 62 games last season and routinely trotted out a regular season lineup featuring players like Jeff Mathis, Donovan Solano and 37-year-old Placido Polanco, are apparently in a tizzy over the spring training lineup the Red Sox put together for Thursday’s Grapefruit League game in Jupiter, Fla. That’s according to the Sun-Sentinel‘s Marlins beat reporter Juan C. Rodriguez, who wrote that team executives were “outraged” over the squad of minor leaguers that Boston sent to Miami’s Roger Dean Stadium to play a team that will feature 36-year-old Rafael Furcal at second base in games that actually count.

Rodriguez also notes that Boston’s lineup was especially galling given that the Marlins had instigated “super premium” pricing for tickets to Thursday’s game against the defending World Series champion, only to watch “organizational filler in Red Sox batting practice jerseys with numbers befitting an offensive line” face a team that, in 2013, charged its fans to watch Ed Lucas compile nearly 400 plate appearances for a team that finished 34 games out of first place in the National League East.

The Marlins, meanwhile, had a lineup that featured seven of their likely Opening Day starters, including Furcal, who has not played in the majors since 2012; third baseman Casey McGehee, who spent all of 2013 in Japan; and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, who was the worst player in baseball last season by WAR (-1.9).

Thursday’s game between the Marlins and Red Sox was called after eight innings due to rain with both teams tied at zero. Boston’s lineup out-hit Miami’s, 7-2.

2017; lock out part two?

I know it's more than a couple years away but I thought this was worth talking about now.

So it may be premature to mention this, but hidden in the details of the league’s day-to-day business in recent months has been this fact: The groundwork is already being laid for another lockout.

That is the consensus among league executives and prominent agents. But it is articulated particularly well by Charles Grantham, who worked for the union from 1978-’95, serving as its executive director for the last seven of those years (he left a year before Billy Hunter, who was deposed last year amid scandal, took over). No replacement for Hunter has been named, and that’s just one element feeding lockout fears.

if new NBA commissioner Adam Silver began working on the next CBA just after the last deal was signed, that puts the union more than two years behind. Chris Paul was only named union president in August of 2013, and the field of candidates for executive director was only narrowed to two last month.

But in order for the players to be working on these kinds of strategies, they need a director.

“There are a whole lot of reasons why this kind of planning should already be underway,” Grantham said. “Management clearly has started their planning—they are putting forth their manpower, their resources, into the next negotiations. For the union, it is a matter of catching up, and the problem is, even when they do catch up, there is the problem of not having as much stability or experience.”

Here’s how the agent puts it: “We know the storm is coming. It looks like we won’t get the raincoats until the day it arrives.”

link

Obviously a lot can happen in 3 years but it's interesting that neither side has seemed to really have learned much from last time.

Broken iPad: Replace screen or buy new?

I have an iPad 3 64GB VZW cellular with a cracked screen. The iPad otherwise works fine. I was quoted $140 to replace the screen by a local shop. Is that a good price? Alternatively, is replacing the screen the way to go, or do Apple stores allow trade-ins and would if make more sense financially to do that, especially if I dropped down on memory on the new IPad? Thanks.
