Lotto odds

Following wins by the Celtics and Lakers last night, there is a bit of separation between the three worst teams (Milwaukee, Philly and Orlando) and the next four teams (Boston, Utah, Sacramento, LAL) who are all within one loss of each other.

Here is the NBA draft lottery process:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_draft_lottery#Process

It is worth noting that in 83% of all possible scenarios the 4th seed will get a pick in the top 5. Meanwhile 82% of the time the 7th seed will pick 7th or 8th.

Looking at this year's draft, that looks like a serious drop off in talent.

Will Paul Pierce Come Back to Boston?

Paul Pierce wouldn’t mind rejoining the Celtics.

“Yeah, why not? Maybe play for them, maybe work for them,” the forward said Friday after the Nets lost to his former team, 91-84, at TD Garden.

Pierce played 15 seasons with the Celtics, who drafted him in 1998. His contract expires after this season and he’ll be an unrestricted free agent.

He received a warm ovation from the crowd and finished with 10 points in 33 minutes, though emotions weren’t as high as in late January, when he returned to the Garden for the first time since he and Kevin Garnett were traded.

“It’s always emotional when you step into a gym you’ve spent your whole life playing in,” Pierce said. “The tribute last time made it so much more emotional and the cheers. But every time I come into this gym, because I’m always seeing friends and people who have been around all the years, it’s always going to be emotional, because you miss them from knowing them so long.”

I think this is threadworthy. Of course it would be a windfall for the Celtics and Ainge would look like a hero, but is it in the best interests of the Celtics to accept him back?. Of course the huge caveat is no one knows what the makeup of next year's team will actually be. My feeling is I would be happy to have him back if the price is right and he is OK with coming off the bench.

Pats Salary Cap: Looking Ahead to 2015

We all know that the Pats have relatively limited cap space this offseason. What's perhaps less understood is the extant to which our cap picture is currently slated to improve in 2015. This has the potentially to really affect our decision making process this offseason, so I thought it was worth a deeper dive and a little analysis.

As a quick and dirty look, we can start with all players under contract for 2015, cut a couple obvious veterans (Sopoaga, A. Wilson) and disregard a bunch of marginal practice squad fodder who currently have non-guaranteed deals with little to no dead money and very little chance of making the team. Then assume Solder's 2015 option is picked up for about $7M and factor in money to sign the 2014 and 2015 draft/UDFA classes (I'm assuming that seven guys from each class make the final roster for 2015). This leaves us with:

2015 Salary Cap Projection

Name

Base

Prorated

Roster

Workout

Cap

Dead

Cap

That is 30 players under contract plus an estimated fourteen more from the 2014-15 draft/UDFA classes, so about 44 players costing $101M. The 2015 salary cap is projected to be about $140M (not factoring in any team rollover). Put aside $5M for practice squad guys and wiggle room and we're talking about $34M in cap space with only nine spots or so open on the 53 man roster. Obviously some of the guys in the table above won't make the 2015 roster but the dead money will be minimal from most of those cuts. Note too that we could save a further $7M in 2015 by cutting Mankins and that this is in the ballpark of what McCourty's cap hit is likely to be if we extend him. So you could just as well substitute McCourty for Mankins and the number of players and total money committed wouldn't change all that much.

The bottom line is that we really do have a lot of flexibility. Hypothetically, we could definitely sign Talib to a 4/44ish deal that basically guarantees two years, have a palatable hit this in the $6-8M range this year, and knock like a $12M cap charge into 2015 without too much of a problem. Then the third year is either a chunk of dead money or another cap hit in the same range. Or we could conserve the space and be well positioned to be major players in free agency in 2015. The overall point is that the prospect of paying the "market rate" for Talib or Edelman or whoever needs to be seen in light of the future cap picture, not just in terms of how our cap looks for 2014.

Steve Nash -- The Finish Line

Steve Nash is letting happen (and I think overseeing at some level, he's sort of a wannabe film-maker working with his cousin if i understand correctly. I guess part of the reason he wanted to finish his career in L.A.) a documentary about his final push to be part of the NBA. Nash has always been a rare type -- looks like one of us, talks like one of us, yet is a great athlete (not like us). He also has that modest Canadian way of expressing himself, which is quite endearing.

It occurs to me watching the two mini-episodes that are already up that one of the fascinations of sports is that we see our own life compressed -- I'm depressed at turning 50 and thinking I only have 15 or so years left of my career to make an impact. When we watch athletes it's not just the ways in which games and seasons mimic the struggle of life, but that careers mimic our own lives but in an incredibly condensed manner. Someone like Nash is depressed about his career ending at 40ish (and he's one of the few that will go on to do interesting things after he retires from sport), which I find intense.

Anyway, worth watching:
episode 1: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-f ... episode-1/

episode 2: http://grantland.com/the-triangle/the-f ... provision/

not sure how many episodes there will be total.

Victorino may give up switch-hitting

SARASOTA, Fla. — Shane Victorino has yet to play a game in spring training for the Red Sox. When he does come back, which should be soon, it may only be as a righthanded hitter.

Victorino largely abandoned switch hitting in August last season because of a strained left hamstring. It proved successful as he hit .300 with an .896 OPS in 115 plate appearances batting righthanded against a righthanded pitcher.

Victorino has been coy about his plans, refusing to say whether he will bat lefthanded again. But he has yet to take a swing batting lefthanded during batting practice sessions on the field.

"It's almost going to be a game-time decision. I think he has his viewpoints on it and where his confidence is," manager John Farrell said this morning. "He hasn't told me that he's eliminating switch hitting."

Victorino is a natural righthanded hitter who learned to switch hit in 2002 when he was in the minors. He has been a better hitter righthanded over the course of his career.

"The right side has always been his strong side," Farrell said. "I think last year his production against righthanded pitching probably has enabled him to be a little bit more open-minded to getting the majority of at-bats from that side of the plate."

Farrell said the Red Sox support the idea.

"We want the most productive player," he said. "If that's what it lends to, we'd be perfectly fine with it if that's what he opts to do."

Batting righthanded Victorino hit a modest .216 in the postseason but drove in 12 runs over 14 games. He had big hits in Game 6 of the ALCS and Game 6 of the World Series.

"You look at the approach at the plate and the overall production and the confidence and you tend to think that has a chance to [continue]," Farrell said. "Time will tell."

Victorino has been held out of games so far for several reasons. He is recovering from surgery on his right thumb and has been doing extra work to strengthen groin muscles that gave him problems last season.

"Hopefully by sometime early this coming week he will be on the field," Farrell said. "All his on-field work has been free, no issues. That's been encouraging."

I think this would be a good decision by Victorino. Hopefully he continues to have the same success he had last season, hitting from that side of the plate

Listening to NHL games on your phone/mobile device

Not sure if I'm just late or if this even deserves a thread, but I was pretty excited to learn that I can listen to a ton of local radio stations using the TuneIn app. The NFL, MLB, and NBA all black out their games on the streaming versions of their radio stations (because they offer them themselves for sale I assume), but the NHL does not, so as long as you know your team's home station you can listen.

Marlins "Outraged" by Red Sox Lineup for ST Game

These early spring games are meaningless. It looks like the real AAA lineup for the Red Sox played the actual ML AAA lineup of the Marlins to a scoreless tie.

Not so, Boomer. Miami Marlins officials were "outraged" the Red Sox sent only JBJ and Lavarnway after they sold "premium" tickets to see the World Champs. This article sums up my feelings pretty well.

The Miami Marlins, who won 62 games last season and routinely trotted out a regular season lineup featuring players like Jeff Mathis, Donovan Solano and 37-year-old Placido Polanco, are apparently in a tizzy over the spring training lineup the Red Sox put together for Thursday’s Grapefruit League game in Jupiter, Fla. That’s according to the Sun-Sentinel‘s Marlins beat reporter Juan C. Rodriguez, who wrote that team executives were “outraged” over the squad of minor leaguers that Boston sent to Miami’s Roger Dean Stadium to play a team that will feature 36-year-old Rafael Furcal at second base in games that actually count.

Rodriguez also notes that Boston’s lineup was especially galling given that the Marlins had instigated “super premium” pricing for tickets to Thursday’s game against the defending World Series champion, only to watch “organizational filler in Red Sox batting practice jerseys with numbers befitting an offensive line” face a team that, in 2013, charged its fans to watch Ed Lucas compile nearly 400 plate appearances for a team that finished 34 games out of first place in the National League East.

The Marlins, meanwhile, had a lineup that featured seven of their likely Opening Day starters, including Furcal, who has not played in the majors since 2012; third baseman Casey McGehee, who spent all of 2013 in Japan; and shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria, who was the worst player in baseball last season by WAR (-1.9).

Thursday’s game between the Marlins and Red Sox was called after eight innings due to rain with both teams tied at zero. Boston’s lineup out-hit Miami’s, 7-2.

2017; lock out part two?

I know it's more than a couple years away but I thought this was worth talking about now.

So it may be premature to mention this, but hidden in the details of the league’s day-to-day business in recent months has been this fact: The groundwork is already being laid for another lockout.

That is the consensus among league executives and prominent agents. But it is articulated particularly well by Charles Grantham, who worked for the union from 1978-’95, serving as its executive director for the last seven of those years (he left a year before Billy Hunter, who was deposed last year amid scandal, took over). No replacement for Hunter has been named, and that’s just one element feeding lockout fears.

if new NBA commissioner Adam Silver began working on the next CBA just after the last deal was signed, that puts the union more than two years behind. Chris Paul was only named union president in August of 2013, and the field of candidates for executive director was only narrowed to two last month.

“There are a whole lot of reasons why this kind of planning should already be underway,” Grantham said. “Management clearly has started their planning—they are putting forth their manpower, their resources, into the next negotiations. For the union, it is a matter of catching up, and the problem is, even when they do catch up, there is the problem of not having as much stability or experience.”

The future of Red Sox Catching

They enter this year with the following five guys on their 40-man roster (according to: http://espn.go.com/mlb/team/roster/_/name/bos/boston-red-sox).

61 Dan Butler C R R 27 5-10 210 Phoenix, AZ N/A

20 Ryan Lavarnway C R R 26 6-4 240 Burbank, CA N/A

40 A.J. Pierzynski C L R 37 6-3 235 Bridgehampton, NY $7,500,000

3 David Ross C R R 36 6-2 230 Bainbridge, GA $3,100,000

79 Christian Vazquez C R R 23 5-9 195 Bayamon, Puerto Rico N/A

Their 2 main catchers are Ross and Pierzynski. Ross is a very good defensive catcher who played well in the World Series. Pierzynski is still an above-average hitter, and they make a nice L-R combo behind the plate.

But they're old. 36 and 37 years old, respectively. They are not the future.

Many of us thought that Lavarnway was the future behind the plate. Good power, and improving defensive skills, it does appear that he has lost the confidence of Sox' brass to be behind the plate. He's played some at 1b this spring, which may simply be to improve his chances of being a MLB contributor (if you can play multiple positions, that's a good thing), but the reality is that they seem disinclined to pursue Lavarnway as a catching option.

See here for an interesting article on that: https://www.bostonglobe.com/sports/2014/03/04/ryan-lavarnway-taking-first-steps-first-base/hW5jT5pZbEkHpFXzY7uuJN/story.html

I don't know much about Dan Butler, but at 27, I can't see him being the future behind the plate either. Although he did have a pretty good year in AAA in 2013: .262/.350/.479/.829, with 14 homers in just 282 at-bats. So he has a little pop and might end up being useful.

The future appears to be Vazquez and Swihart.

Vazquez (2013): 345 ab, 5 hr, 48 rbi, .287/.375/.391/.766, and is a tremendous defensive catcher with a cannon for an arm. 23 yrs old.

Swihart (2013): 376 ab, 2 hr, 42 rbi, .298/.366/.428/.794, and is solid behind the plate. 21 yrs old.

Each has tremendous upside. The question is when will they be ready for the majors? Vazquez' defensive ability may make him ready to go as soon as 2015. Swihart is further behind. Could the Sox go with Ross and Pierzynski this year, and then Vazquez and another veteran (re-sign Pierzynski?) in 2015, with the idea being Vazquez and Swihart starting in 2016? And what of Lavarnway?

Catcher Framing Pt. 2

Back in 2011 I started a thread about catcher framing based on an article on BPro by Mike Fast, who is currently employed by the Astros. Yesterday, BPro published a new article by Harry Pavlidis and Dan Brooks yesterday. They have come out with a new model, Regressed Probabilistic Model. Bad news for AL East teams, McCann isn't only a very good hitting catcher, he is also excellent at framing pitches. Here's a brief explanation from the article:

Since the beginning of the PITCHf/x era, researchers have calculated framing in several different ways. We are presenting a new method that we will call the "Regressed Probabilistic Model" of framing (RPM for short). In brief, RPM works by calculating the combined probability (and associated run value) that each pitch will be called a strike; summing those probabilities (and run values) across opportunities; attributing those values to a player (catcher or pitcher); and regressing "career" values to the mean.

We will freely admit: If you haven't seen the results of previous framing studies, it can be tough to wrap your mind around the size of the impact of a good or bad framing catcher. These effect sizes are not out of line with what has been reported in the past, but they're still obscenely large. Everyone agrees that Mike Trout was either a deserving MVP or a deserving runner-up in each of the past two seasons, which the stats say were worth close to 10 wins apiece. Our data suggest that over the past five years, the teams that have employed good framers like Jonathan Lucroy, Brian McCann, and Jose Molina have received essentially "free" MVP-caliber seasons from framing alone. (Each of those catchers has been worth about two extra wins per season over that span). This is a staggering amount of value. Add in the fact that these wins are almost assuredly not properly priced into the free agent market, and the difference between having a good framing catcher or a bad framing catcher can make or break a cost-conscious team.

Report: Revis to be released if not traded

Stop me guyzzzzz.

I'm dreaming of Revis. Against all logic and better judgement, it's too tantalizing to have Revis in a Pats uniform.

Restructure the big cap guys, release the obvious (Wilson), do not sign another safety, do not re-sign Talib, dock your boat on The Island.

Just need two signings this off-season: Revis and Bryant -- this defense is now a legit top-10 unit (hell it was a top 10 unit last year before the injury streak).

P.S. If someone else posted the above I'd have dismissed it pronto. Also, this seems appropriate:
