I watched him pitch a couple of times, good arm, can't throw strikes, good slider/curveball. I guess he is a better chance of becoming something in the long run than Smith.
In the minors, Smith's career K/9 is 6.97 and his walk and hit rates are 2.30 and 9.58 respectively. This season with Pawtucket those ratios were 7.89, 1.67 and 8.19.
Day's career line: 10.13, 4.60 and 8.65. This season at AA and AAA: 7.57, 4.29 and 10.09, but his walk rate at AA Birmingham was an atrocious 5.29 compared to 2.28 with Charlotte.
I think it's the classic power arm vs finesse pitcher comparison. On paper, one might not see the appeal, but a tall, hard throwing righty certainly has more upside than Smih against the lineups of the AL East.
And isn't Smith eligible to become a 6-year minor league free agent this winter anyway?
