Full Version: Complete Listing of Players for a Given Year?

This is going to sound stupid. Is there a complete reference for all players who played in at least one game for a team in a given season? I typically go to Baseball Almanac for this kind of information, but believe there may be some discrepancies with minor leaguers brought up for short terms during the season. Either that or my memory is getting really bad.

I am trying to remember the name of this one player from the Orioles in the late 90s so I can settle a dispute. I attended a lot of games at Camden Yards when I was in college and there was this huge, thick, fat, white, slow running outfielder. People thought he was a power hitter but he was awful, I think he only lasted 2 weeks as someone's DL replacement and never got off the bench much after that. After some strikeouts and incredibly poor fielding during this game, he was getting heckled pretty bad and flipped out at some of us in the stands. His eyes got huge, his exposed skin turned bright red, his hyperexpanded muscles knotted up in a bunch so you could see them through all the flab, and this guy's outburst terrified children and old people in the section. He became my image of Roid Rage that night and friends and I still make jokes about it whenever we want to suggest an overwhelmingly inappropriate response to criticism.

Event with all that, no one has ever asked what this guy's name actually is, and we're having some trouble agreeing who it could have been. He was on the team sometime in 1996 or 1997, but I could not find any reference to him on the Baseball Almanac's web site. About 75% sure the Orioles were playing the Red Sox and believe he was part of the 40 man roster at the end of the season. He had a complicated last name that sounded something like 'Incaviglia' but I am convinced it was not Pete, who was on the team that year. From what some of us remember, he was a minor league guy they brought up, his first name was Mike and he is simply not listed anywhere because he was not with the club that long.

Anyways, to the point:

1) Am I wrong about Baseball Almanac's site? Do they have every player who played at least one game with a club listed on the yearly rosters?

2) Anywhere I can search a game by game roster list? I think I could narrow this down more with some effort and happy to do the digging.

3) Any ideas on who I could be talking about? I can't believe this event went unnoticed given all the press about how Orioles players treated fans.

I guess the obvious place would be Baseball Reference, right?

1996 Orioles
1997 Orioles

Baseball reference is the best site for this type of thing. The only thing they may be missing, are players who get called up, but never appear in a game. But if you had one plate appearance, or threw one pitch it will be listed.

Retrosheet.org is also good for game boxscores and play-by-play, if you know an exact date.

http://www.thebaseballcube.com/ is a website I recently discovered.. It's so comprehensive, you can find out who Jamie Moyer's teammates were on the 1984 Single A Geneva Cubs. If you look that up, you'll find that 2 other teammates made the majors...one teammate hasn't been in the major in 27 years, and another hasn't been in 17 years.

Retrosheet has much the same stats that Baseball-Reference has. In fact, it is the source for much of Baseball-Ref's play-by-play data. The organization and presentation of data is different but if you want, you can download all the play-by-play files for nothing from Retrosheet and do your own searching.

Player year-by-year stats can be downloaded from Baseball Databank and from Sean Lahmans' site.
