Team: Dominican Summer League Red Sox
Record: 43-27 (7 GB in BC South. 3 1/2 GB in Wild Card)

The DSL Red Sox finished the season in 3rd place in the BC South Division of the DSL. Their division finish and their finishing record (16 games over .500) was the best this team has had in recent memory. The team was led by their pitching as 13 of the 20 pitchers who competed for the DSL Sox had ERAs under 3.50. The hitting, on the other hand, was less spectacular, as only two players ended OPSes over .750. Let's take a look at the individuals.

Most Valuable Player: Juan Bonifacio - The 19 year old Outfielder finished the season with a line of .275/.410/.435 with 37 walks (60 strikeouts) and 18 extra-base hits (9 2B, 5 3B, 4 HR). Juan stole 13 bases while being caught 6 times.

Most Valuable Pitcher: Victor de la Cruz - The 19 year old Right-Handed Pitcher put up a perfect line of 3-0 with 3 saves over 11 relief appearances. Victor pitched 36 innings, giving up 23 hits and 12 walks; allowing only 6 runs (5 earned) while striking out 37. Victor led the team with a 1.25 ERA and a 0.97 WHIP.

I don't know what to make of any of those numbers. I don't have any idea of the context in which they occurred. Is the Dominican Summer Leage a pitcher friendly league? Hitter friendly? One way in some parks the other way in other parks? And, at that age, isn't the scouting part of the evaluation even more a dominant part of prospect assessment?

I'll try to give you some context... but there are issues.

1) Not all teams play every other team in the league. So, given that, it is hard to give league information complete credence.
2) I agree that scouting is much more important than actual numbers. Unfortunately, we don't get that information here. We'll know a lot more about how the Red Sox feel about these players next season by how they promote (or don't promote).

Both of these issues are true of the GCL as well.

Now... generally speaking, in the DSL the pitching rules. The best team offense in the league was the Giants who had a line of .266/.372/.370/.742. (The Yankees1 also had an OPS of 742... less OBP, more SLG). The Red Sox's OPS of 706 was 6th in the league. Four Teams had team OPS UNDER 600... and 12 MORE teams had and OPS under 650.

The Red Sox ERA of 3.41 was 13th in the league. That being said, all teams gave up large amount of unearned runs (a quick eyeballing of the stats says the LOWEST number of unearned runs given up was 43)... so the Red Sox ranked 11th in terms of actual runs given up.

So, there is some context. The offensive numbers are going to look bad... but doesn't mean they actually are (in context).
