Lowell Game Story

QUOTE
The party's over. It's time to get back to work.

That was the message Lowell Spinners manager Gary DiSarcina delivered to the Stedler Division champions before last night's game after two days of rest for some worn-out players and celebration for all.

The Spinners had lost both their games since clinching their first division title last Saturday night. They heeded the manager's message, twice rallying from two runs down to beat the Tri-City ValleyCats 9-6 in front of the usual sellout crowd of 5,030 at LeLacheur Park.

The Spinners, who have four regular-season road games left, wrapped up their home schedule last night with a 21-15 record at LeLacheur (and Fenway Park). They also increased their sellout streak to 344 straight games dating back to August of 1999.

"Today was that day," DiSarcina said. "There was a bit of a hangover from clinching, and that's OK for a day. But two or three? No.

"You don't want the team to lose any confidence and forget how to win."

Deshaun Brooks rapped four hits -- only the second four-hit game by a Spinner this season -- and Will Middlebrooks had three hits, two stolen bases, scored two runs, knocked in two, and saved a run with a key defensive play in the seventh inning.

The Spinners, the second-worst hitting team in the New York-Penn League, finished the night with a season-high 16 hits.

"We talked about that tonight," Middlebrooks said, "that we can't get too relaxed. We need to put some wins together again before the playoffs."
