Name: Chad Spann
Born: October 25, 1983
Resides: Buena Vista, GA
Height: 6-1
Weight: 195
Bats: Right
Throws: Right
Drafted: 5th Round, 2002
College: None
High School: Southland Academy
Scouting Report: Blew away expectations in 2003. Spann is very athletic, has great bat speed, patience, and pitch recognition, with the potential for more power which has yet to show. He has a decent glove as well as good speed. Keeps a very consistent routine and makes adjustments well. Should move through the organization quickly if he continues to retain his 2003 form.

Chad went 1-3, with a walk, in Saturday's spring training game against AA New Britain. This was his first documented spring appearance in a game.
Spann has apparently had some health issues this spring. If healthy, he is ticketed to be the starting third baseman in Portland.
Edit: Chad went 1-3 in Sunday's spring training game against AA New Britain.
In both games, Chad batted third and played third base.

It's been a while, so let's get right to the bad news.
Enrique Wilson retired just after Chad Spann gets hurt, thus foiling possibly his promotion to AAA.
Chad continues to lead the stumbling Sea Dogs with a .294 average.
Chad was placed on the DL on August 4 (retroactive to August 3) with a sore left ankle and is eligible to be activated on August 10.
I will update his numbers in the next post. Between July 17 and the time he went on the DL, Chad was not playing well, however.
He is at .294/.361/.472/.833 for the year.

It seemed to me that by playing in the GCL at 18 (in 2002), Spann would be exposed if not on the 40-man this year. Knowing that Kyle Jackson and Phil Seibel were added, I can't fathom why Spann would be left unprotected unless he couldn't be drafted by another team.
I have to assume that Spann is not eligible to be taken in the Rule 5 draft according to the new rules, seeing how he wasn't added to the big league roster today...but can anyone confirm this?

PAWTUCKET — Although his play at third base has been solid from the outset, Chad Spann’s performance at the plate in his first month of Triple-A ball was not exactly something to write home about.
That’s certainly changed in the last week, however.
The 23-year-old has had plenty of good things to report lately, including his first home run and his first three-hit game in Pawtucket’s 3-1 win over Toledo on Monday.
After drawing a walk in his first at-bat, Spann extended his hitting streak to five games last night against Durham with an RBI single in the Pawsox’ four-run third inning.
“He’s really swinging the bat well the last few days,” PawSox skipper Ron Johnson said of Spann, the 2003 Red Sox Minor League Player of the Year at Single-A Augusta. “He’s a young guy, and as young guys do, when they move from level to level, it’s a feeling-out process. And he’s done an outstanding job. I’ve really been impressed with this guy’s maturity. He’s a young fella, and he has handled himself as a veteran.”
***
“There’s a big difference between disappointment and devastation,” Johnson said of the range of emotions a player can experience during a hitting slump. “You can be disappointed about your performance, but what we don’t want to see is devastation, because then it can snowball and that’s something that’s really tough to come out of. Watching (Spann), though, I’ve just been impressed with the way he’s handled himself. He hasn’t been devastated. He’s been disappointed, of course; the kid’s a human being. But this guy’s been working nonstop throughout the year with (PawSox hitting coach Mark Budaska). And we know he’s got ability. . . . I’m hoping this is a nice starting point to propel him off and get him to where he needs to be.”

Spann gets adjusted
There’s been a lot of talk this season about all the young talent in Pawtucket, but for some reason third baseman Chad Spann has flown under the radar a bit. The 23-year-old was selected by Boston in the fifth round (148th overall) in 2002 and finally made the jump to Triple-A this season.
After hitting .294 with 10 homers and 50 RBI in 99 games for the Sea Dogs in 2006, Spann has yet to make the transition to this level.
“It’s not going real well,” said Spann. “I’m struggling a little bit and it hasn’t come together, yet. I’m going out and working hard every day to make the adjustment to make it all work.”
Spann has slowly come around of late. Before last night’s game against the Clippers, he was hitting .292 (14 for 48) with two homers and three RBI in his last 13 games.
He’s been trying to keep it simple of late and said he was thinking too much when he was in the box.
“He’s holding his own mentallty,” said Johnson. “I know he’s disappointed right now with his offensive numbers, but I have been very impressed with this guy with his overall approach and professionalism for a young player who is battling adversity.
“He’s a diligent worker and he doesn’t seem to be devastated I’m sure he’s disappointed, but there’s a difference between the two,” added Johnson. “As long as he continues to do that, he’ll climb out of it. It’s a big learning thing for him right now.”

Chad has been placed on the Pawtucket roster to begin 2008.

And now he's been released - hitting .185 for the season wasn't going to be a good long term strategy. He's replaced on the Paw Sox roster by Jeff Natale

A tad disappointing. After his 2003 season, and then again after his 2006 season, I had some high hopes that Spann could even one day be a decent everyday player, but he's really gone down hill the past two seasons.
Christ, it seems like just 4 years ago I was arguing with others elsewhere that while Spann was nice and all, it was stupid to dump Youkilis in favor of handing the future 3B job to Spann (who had just finished
low A ball.
