QUOTE(Soxprospects)
90-95 mph fastball complemented by a plus low 80s curve and a decent change. Pounds the zone with good command. Control of his secondary pitches could use some improvement. Fastball has great late life. Consistent. Struggled recovering from a broken collarbone sustained prior to the 2007 season. Demonstrated flashes of dominance during his freshman campaign at Notre Dame. The Sox may develop Weiland as a starter down the line.

I really like this kid as a future lower end rotation starter. His low WHIP and very good K ro BB looks very promising. I hope the Player Development people work with this kid.

Someone with more direct knowledge of Weiland can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm under the assumption that he is targeted for RP work. The Sox have a history of working guys as SP to build arm strength and develop secondary stuff, as long as it isnt detrimental.

He actually came up in Keith Law's chat this week:

Eric (MA): What can you tell me about Red Sox minor league rookie of the year Kyle Weiland? What does he project as down the road? Thanks.

Keith Law: Setup man, potentially a closer. Definitely in the pen.

From his info page on SoxProspects: "The Sox will attempt to develop Weiland as a starter down the line." Although they have him listed as a RP.

So I think the jury is out on this one. He was certainly intriguing enough this year that I imagine the Sox let him continue to start as long as he has continued success. Probably similar to the Masterson route, even though he projects as more of a RP, let him prove it, as to not limit your own options.

Any idea where he will be pitching this upcoming season? I missed a chance to see him in the NY Penn league. I live near the TriCity Valley Cats and always like to catch the games when the Spinners come to play.

I would think Weiland would start the year in Salem.
