Scouting
To come...

History
Jeff Corsaletti was drafted by the Red Sox as a 4th year senior out of Florida U. After being drafted in the 22nd round by the Indians following his junior year (2004), Corsaletti finished his career at Florida strong, posting a .984 OPS and reaching double figures in home runs (10) for the first time. He was assigned to low-A Greenville by the Red Sox following the draft, where put up terrific numbers (again primarily younger opposition) in 59 games.

2006 Outlook
2006 will be his age 23 season, and with a likely high-A Wilmington assignment, he will need to perform well there and move quickly to AA to place himself among the system's top prospects.

Corsaletti was assigned to Wilmington to start the year and has done a good job of getting on base, but has yet to show any real power. His line through May 1:

CODE

Team       From     To    G  AB   R   H  2B 3B  HR  RBI  TB  BB  SO  SB  CS   OBP  SLG   AVG
Wilmington 04/06  05/01  24  88  12  23  6   1   0   8   31  20  18  5   1   .394  .352  .261

He's walked in 18.5% of his PAs, and struct out 16.6%. But an ISOP of just .091 with 6 doubles, 1 triple and no home runs has been the problem. Although he's never been a huge power threat, he needs that number to be closer to .150 to be productive.
The Gray Eagle
Corsaletti with 3 HRs in the last 2 games, that ISOP ought to be looking quite a bit better:

The Gray Eagle
Corsaletti now at .260/.390/.403 in 273 at-bats. Leads the club with 41 RBI, is 57-57 in BB/K. Only 5 HRs, but 7/9 in stolen bases.

For some reason, I hope to see him turn into the next Darren Bragg someday, if he can keep getting on base. And that would be quite a good outcome for him.

From BA's 31st Team:
QUOTE
Corsaletti's average dropped 93 points from his pro debut (.357) to his first full season (.264), but he still reached base at a 40 percent clip--something he'll have to do to keep advancing up the ladder. He lacks the profile of an everyday player but has some skills that could make him a useful complementary player. He's a lefthanded hitter with a patient approach, drawing walks and working counts. He centers the ball well on the bat, giving him decent power, and he has slightly above-average speed and good baserunning instincts. If he could play center field, he might project as a regular, but he gets shaky jumps and is a below-average defender there. While his arm strength has gotten slightly better since he turned pro, it's still a liability and his accuracy is also an issue. He has just two outfield assists in 175 pro games. Because he's relegated to left field, Corsaletti will have to rely on his bat to take him to the majors. He'll need to improve against lefthanders, who held him to a .232 average last year, well down from a .346 mark in 2005. Corsaletti goes all out all the time, an approach that endears him to managers and scouts. How he performs in Double-A this year will give a clearer sense of his future.

Interesting, it sounds like defense is what is holding him back from having a career as a 4th outfielder. It always boggles my mind when professional athletes don't play good defense. Defense is almost 100 percent effort and practice; it takes 1/10th the skill it takes to hit a baseball in order to catch it. One would think that people who get paid to play the game would have enough time to work on defense until they're at least adequate at it.
Jeff Van GULLY
Jeff recently has been promoted from XST and in 7 games (25 ab's), he has hit 3 doubles and 2 HR's (he had 6 all of last year) and is sporting a 1.094 OPS.

If all goes well, he should be in Pawtucket by season's end.
TheGoldenGreek33
Corsaletti was 4/4 with a 2B, 3B, and 2 R tonight for Portland.
Jeff Van GULLY
Update through 51 AB's:

6 2b's
3 HR's
9/6 K/BB
.441 OBP
1.127 OPS

Jeff continues to pound the ball, may he continue to hit.
Jeff Van GULLY
Since May 2nd, Jeff has hit .212 with 2 doubles.

Although he has gone through a cold streak he has managed to get on base with an impressive 7/11 K/BB ratio.

Now hitting for the season:

.298/.423/.524

He also cannot hit lefties
Season OPS:
vs Lefty .679
vs Righty 1.073

Coraletti's last 10, he's hitting .325, and his lefty/right splits are better now on the season:
OPS vs. Left (50AB's) .832
OPs vs. Right (78AB's) 1.087

It's his home road OPS splits (1.237/.792) which are now Kotteras-esque, although he really doesn't have enough PA's on the season to be all that telling. Not a bad start though, for a guy who could be a back-up in the bigs, should he play well the next two years or so.
Jeff Van GULLY
.281/.411/.510

5 HR's
32 SO
32 BB
4SB
0 CS

OPS vs. Left .869
OPS vs Right .951

OPS: Home: 1.073
OPS: Away: .776

Even when he isn't hitting he's getting on base which is good. More walks than strikeouts is another encouraging sign and if he continues to produce, he may be in line for a promotion at some point this season.

Away: .852

He's 25 years old and is MASHING in AA. Hitting .302 with 3 HR's and a 6/7 K:BB ratio in his last 10 games. He's shown the patience and the power, it's about that time for Pawtucket.

Where would he play? Seriously... You could get rid of Pritz... but even then, you have Carter, Bailey, Van Every and Danielson above him... and then when Kielty comes back, you have to have him play somewhere as well. This doesn't even add in Brandon Moss... or the fact that Zach Daeges might deserve the same exact promotion.

The Sox have a whole bunch of good outfielders playing in AAA and AA ball... unfortunately, promotions are probably not going to happen barring a trade.
Jeff Van GULLY
It's certainly a problem, although a good problem to have.

Can we agree that he is too good for AA?

Corsaletti is getting older and we need to see what we have with this guy; he could possibly be a contributor in 2009. We drafted him as a college senior in 2005 and he's already spent a full season in Portland in 2007. Just because 29 year old Van Every (playing well [.800+ OPS] and already promoted to the show and back) and Sean Danielson (27 in August, .647 OPS) are in Pawtucket doesn't mean you should limit Corsaletti's development.

He needs to be challenged and perhaps what's most impressive is his .929 OPS vs. lefty's.

I don't pretend to have the solution to the outfield glut but I favor developing our younger guys over keeping Bobby Kielty or Danielson in AAA. Whether through trade or releasing a guy, Daeges and Corsaletti deserve to move up at some point this season.
Razor Shines
He definitely seems like someone who should start getting more attention then he has. He's been an on-base machine throughout his entire pro-career. He was sort of written-off early from a scouting standpoint, but if he maintains that OBP around .400 and slugging around .500 for a full season in Portland, he might be a Top 20 guy.

He won't have much of a future as a corner outfielder for an organization like Boston, but maybe as trade bait?

Thru 265 AB's:

50 BB

OPS

Home: 1.006
Away: .851

Jeff had his worst month in June hitting for an .832 OPS. However through 27 AB's in July he has an 1.067 OPS, yay Jeff.

What I like about this kid is that he has a great eye which gets him on base at a fantastic rate and he can hit Lefties and Righties equally.

Van Gully love himself some Corsaletti

When is he going to get a chance at AAA? At 25 he's a bit old for AA, but none the less great season by him so far

It's hard to move him up with Bailey, Carter and Van Every (AAA All-Stars all) blocking him. It's even more difficult with Bobby Kielty and Sean Danielson (who is all of a sudden hitting a little bit) also in Pawtucket.

Yea I understand that he is being blocked by the great play of the AAA outfielders, I was kind of just thinking out loud. I guess a better question would be, How much do the Red Sox value him in respect to the AAA OFs? Or would there be any interest from other teams for his services? (more as a throw in type player in a trade.) He would up his value if he was promoted to AAA and continued to play well. But I still would say that he won't be seeing AAA this year barring a trade/realease/injury or a combination of the 3.
Fishercat
A late announcement, but Corsaletti is one of three Sea Dogs OFs to make the All-Star Roster for the Northern Division in the Eastern League. He joins Bubba Bell (fan vote) and Zach Daeges (replaced Nick Evans of Binghamton IIRC) to make 3/5 of the OFs Portland (goes with Austin Jackson of Trenton and Travis Snider of the Fishercats, two pretty huge prospects).

So over their two top minor league teams, they have six all-stars in the OF. Damn. Add that the two in the majors, and only CocoEllsbury is being left out. Hah.
