Doesn't mean the NFL coverage will improve if the people who opted to run the story are still there.

With Felger leaving, they may also be reshuffling the football coverage hierarchy. Not sure if they'll actually fill Felger's vacant beat columnist spot with an in-house writer or just let Massarotti continue with his charade of providing insightful commentary on the game of football on a more full-time basis.

Training camp opens up Thursday. It would be an odd time to start looking for a new beat writer when such a process should have been in the works a month ago -- I mean, it's not like Tomase's situation was going to get any better (or worse, really). I admit, Tomase's absence is noteworthy; then again, nothing has been posted on the Herald's Point After blog for nearly three weeks. Mike Reiss they ain't.

After the whole Taping story and public apology clusterfuck, I couldn't see any way that Tomase would be returned to the Pats beat. He would be persona non grata in that locker room and at Gillette, and his effectiveness would have been severely limited if the players and staff decided to freeze him out.

I commented in one of the other Tomase threads that I wouldn't be at all surprised if the Pats told the Herald that they wouldn't seat Tomase ever again. I think that's appropriate for them to say given the situation and the Herald would be smart to accept it if it were said.

No idea if that's what happened, but certainly can't rule it out. While I agree with SJH that it's possible the players would remember what he wrote, I think it's far, far more true that higher level Pats people will remember--and act--based on what Tomase did. On the whole, I think the players are separated from Spygate to a degree they aren't if it's something that specifically implicates them.

I did find it interesting that Tomase did an article recently with The Sporting News about Jerod Mayo, featuring quotes from Mayo and Belichick. Is it possible someone else got the quotes?
