Why is this a bad hire? He was Nova top assistant and helped bring in a couple of great classes for Nova.

Seton Hall Fires Orr

I'm not really sure what the expectations are at Seton Hall these days but apparently a Tourney Bid is NOT one of them. Sound like Orr's less than stellar recruiting track record in the NY-Jersey area was his main downfall.

I think recruiting players to Seton Hall has to be the most difficult job right now in the Big East.

Midnight Madness is tomorrow, and I am fired up for this year, big time. Jeff Green and Roy Hibbert give the Hoyas one of the top 3 frontcourts in the country, and if they can get something out of the talented but raw trio of Patrick Ewing, Dajuan Summer, and Vernon Macklin they may rival Florida. The guards are less spectacular, but should be good enough to make a strong push for a Big East title and maybe even a trip to April. Excitement is as high as I have ever seen in my 10+ years at GU- student season tickets sold out in August, they are bargaining for more now, and there is a chance the Verizon Center will actually be a legitimate home gym.

Even better is that JTIII is now eating Gary Williams' lunch on local recruiting- Gtown just got a huge commitment for next year from Chris Wright, a top 10 PG from DC's St. John's HS. He will team with Austin Freeman of DeMatha to be the highest-ranked incoming backcourt perhaps in GU history. They are the only 2 returning All-Mets, and with 2 stud VA/MD recruits in Summers and Macklin as sophomores, 2008 may be even brighter, especially with both Green and Hibbert indicating they will stay 4 years at media day today:

QUOTE
Roy Hibbert on his two remaining years of eligibility: "Oh, I'll be here for two more years. I have no doubt about that."

QUOTE
Jeff Green on his two remaining years of eligibility: "I've been talking to my dad and I want to get a degree. People in my family haven't gotten the opportunity that I have, so I want to take advantage of that and get myself a degree, so I think I'm going to stay all four years....You know, after basketball, what else am I going to have? So me getting a degree is a big part of my future."

Believe it when I see it, I know, and it actually creates a scholarship crunch if true, but man, that is a scary thought for the rest of the Big East, I would think.

Today is Big East media day, and with it we get the preseason coaches poll. The projected league standings are out already. Pitt no. 1, GU no. 2- I won't argue, although the Big East writers have it reversed.

QUOTE
Coaches Poll
School Pts.
1. Pittsburgh (10) 219
2. Georgetown (4) 212
3. Syracuse (1) 182
4. Marquette (1) 181
5. Connecticut 173
6. Louisville 149
7. Villanova 146
8. DePaul 134
9. St. John's 105
10. Providence 102
11. Notre Dame 80
12. West Virginia 72
13. Cincinnati 52
14. Rutgers 49
15. Seton Hall 42
16. USF 22

The coaches also selected Aaron Gray as Preseason POY and Paul Harris as ROY, along with the typical unwieldy All-BIG EAST team. I think we can look at the 4 unanimous choices as a pretty good start, probably add in Sumpter, and have a pretty good idea of the real top 5, mirroring the writers selections.

2006-07 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team
*Aaron Gray, Pittsburgh (Player of the Year), C, Sr., 7-0, 270, Emmaus, Pa.
Jeff Adrien, Connecticut, F, So., 6-7, 245, Brookline, Mass.
Wilson Chandler, DePaul, F, So., 6-8, 210, Benton Harbor, Mich.
Sammy Mejia, DePaul, G, Sr., 6-6, 195, Bronx, N.Y.
*Jeff Green, Georgetown, F, Jr., 6-9, 235, Hyattsville, Md.
*Roy Hibbert, Georgetown, C, Jr., 7-2, 283, Adelphi, Md.
Juan Palacios, Louisville, F, Jr., 6-8, 245, Medelin, Columbia
*Dominic James, Marquette, G, So., 5-11, 175, Richmond, Ind.
Lamont Hamilton, St. John's, F, Sr., 6-10, 253, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Terrence Roberts, Syracuse, F, Sr., 6-9, 235, Jersey City, N.J.
Curtis Sumpter, Villanova, F, Sr., 6-7, 220, Brooklyn, N.Y.
Rod Becks Mullet
Its still It is ridiculous that I can't spell the word ridiculous that they have a 12 man all conference team.

That being said, I agree, the 4 unanimous and Sumpter has to be the preseason picks. Although until I see Sumpter on the court at full speed, I'm going to be a bit skeptical. I would put James ahead of Gray as POY, and I agree with Harris as FOY.

Certainly UCon lost a fair amount, as did Villanova, but even those teams will be pretty solid contenders by the time all is said and done. As it stands now, the Big East has 2 preseason Top 10 quality teams in Pitt and Gtown and at least 8 teams in total that will be disappointed not to make the tournament. The preseason hype will be at Florida (justifiably), UNC, Kansas, and Ohio St. (all 3 relying on quite a lot of unproven talent), but the Big East measures up with any other conference in the country right now in terms of quality depth. The SEC probably projects as the strongest conference in the country with Bama, LSU, and Tennessee all giving the Gators tough competition, but I would not necessarily rank anyone else ahead of the Big East.
